Reggie Jackson says he considered retiring after current contract: 'I had hit basketball depression'’

“A few years back, I thought (my future) was retirement after this season,” Jackson told The Detroit News. “I’m just happy to be in a good state of mind and playing ball this year. We’ll figure (the future) out from there. I’m excited about what we can possibly do this year.”

Jackson added: “I was just getting injured too much and I had hit basketball depression and it was a point in time that I really didn’t want to deal with the game anymore. It was more the injuries that started to have that (retirement) thought creep in my head.”

Jackson has always gotten way too much hate. He was injured or significantly less than 100% for like 2.5 years or something. It was very encouraging seeing him bounce back since January and showing his explosion again. The dude was really nice for the last half of the season but I'm sure everyone will continue to rip on him. I think he is going to have a great season for us if we end up keeping him.

Even when healthy his style of play is not conducive to winning. He can have individually great nights and still not elevate the team. He's an undersized 2 guard who can't defend. If he had a more reasonable contract he might look like a decent 3rd guard of the bench, but as is when you do add the injuries into the equation he's an albatross.

In an alternate universe we are returning Brandon Jennings and DJ Augustin as our point guards and Reggie Jackson is the still frustrated backup to Westbrook.

Damn that achilles.

Yeah right, he was never going to retire with 18 million left per year. It's too bad Bowers freaked out after Jennings went down and RJ got that much.

At least we can hope that his tenure ends here and we can finally break it off...right? He was always just a "eh" PG for me. Too selfish and doesn't make his teammates better in crucial moments. He just wants to get his.

If he wants to come back on a Rose type level contract...then maybe, but we need a new era of PGs.

I think he's a recurring injury and about 3 years away from retiring, as it is.

I never understood the RJ hate. When healthy, he's a middling starting pg. It's really not his fault SVG opened up the vault for him.

When healthy, he could get into the paint and create some space for guys to take jumpshots, but that's about it. If he was surrounded with multi-dimensional perimeter guys, he would have looked much better. I guess it's fair to say he didn't make guys better, but honestly, he hasn't had much to work with in terms of other perimeter threats.

Pistons fans have to be rooting for Reggie as we go into this season. Healthy, he's a solid 6'3" ball handler who can put pressure on the basket, dishing and getting his own. Reggie is tough when he has both his bounce and crazy length. His outside spot up was pretty good last year. I can't evaluate the depth of his angst. Hope he's feeling better and prospers, as that's best for him and the Pistons. Who can guess how it works out long term? Pistons loaded up at PG this off season?

I am inclined to agree with you completely on this one. With Reggie it feels like its moreso people upset about what he's not, instead of upset about what he is. Outside of the hero ball I suppose, that's annoying sometimes but I guess its apart of who he is and sometimes it works out.

For most of his contract he was getting paid more than the value that he was providing for his team at his position. Some of it was beyond his control (injuries and surrounding talent). Some of it wasn't (effort on defense) and some is debatable (lapses in ball movement vs offensive scheme).

But if you sign a contract like that then getting blamed if you don't perform to that level is part of the job description. I mean, unless he's willing to give some of that money back (which will/can never happen) then there's a disparity there. And fans are right to be unhappy about it.

And he never said that was what he was going to do. He said there was a point when he thought he'd retire as soon as this contract was up.

His defense was horrible when he was dealing with the ankle and tendinitis flare ups. He was perfectly adequate outside of those stretches. But boy, was he horrible on defense when he played hurt.
