Would you max Ingram?

Big wing, young, putting up good numbers in NO but a RFA.

Would you be willing to max him out this off-season as a "building block" for the future?

No, that basically kills a rebuild. It takes all our flexibility and likely pushes us out of the lottery - certainly out of the top 5 range.

He is probably worth a max for the right team. I agree with Bill we need to rebuild first before going after it in free agency. This puts us back in the hunt for the 8th seed...

Pelicans match any offer.

Yes. But Pellies match.

Ingram, 2020 Top 6 FRP and Sekou is enough of a "rebuild/future core" along with now pieces going forward. However as stated Pellies will match.

Pellies will match anything for him.

Don't want to grab him now anyways. Ingram/top 3 from a draft(if we even get top 3) with no franchise player/Sekou does not equal title-contending core.

I'm only using cap space to take back bad contracts for assets right now. We need to hit on some franchise-changing rookies then look to free agency.

Don't think adding him and a top 5 pick in this Draft makes us as competitive as some of you believe.

Wood, Maker, Hall
(Griffin), Sekou
Ingram, Snell, King
Luke, Svi, Thomas
Brown, Rose, Bone

Is still a terrible roster. Assuming we add Hayes, Okoro or Okongwu via the Draft doesn't really move the needle next year.

Let's say we Draft Okongwu and trade Luke for Okoro...(pipe dream).

Long term:

C: Wood
F: Sekou
F: Ingram
G: Okoro
G: Brown
6: Okongwu F/C
7: Svi G/F
8: Bone G

Likely won't blossom until Blake is gone anyway

We are in no position to max anyone.

Thought we had enough to max a guy like Ingram?

$35 mil cap space give or take some.

His max first year is $29 mil give or take some.

Obviously we'll take care of Wood too

Absolutely max him. It would jumpstart the team 5 years ahead of the rebuild. Think about spending 5 years developing a star. It's already been done with him. So MAX him and run to the Playoffs with Ingram Blake and Rose. You then keep competing and we're drafting high. Plenty of depth to go over the cap to keep players that we have bird rights with. Of course max Ingram and then work what you can later with Blake. If you can get a star, get him asap. But Pelicans will match any offer.

I'd lean towards yes.

A 4 year deal fora guy who'll be 23 next season seems like a worthy risk to me.

Obviously there's the whole "well, we should just stay the course and wait" but at his age you can't help but feel like he doesn't really mess it up.

I think he's young enough to build around. Plus when griffin expires he should be in his prime so we can potentially add another star in FA. Hopefully sekou and whoever else we draft keep developing and we may have a half decent team.
The only reservation I have is his health. Didnt Ingram have an issue with blood clots? I obviously don't know enough about that, but if that is an ongoing thing, long contract could really hurt us down the road.

The theory is we won't draft someone better than him in the next 2 years...

Say we retain Woods for long enough to have his Bird Rights and max Ingram.

Draft Okongwu...develop him and Sekou.

Wood
Okongwu
Hall
Sekou
Ingram

With Blake here for a couple to "mentor" them.

Luke, Svi, Brown & Bone have Rose as a "mentor"

It's a nice base to work from and with the Draft odds flattened a bit...

I honestly don't think adding Ingram and Okongwu makes us all that competitive next year. Not to the point that it severely hampers our prospects moving forward

Don’t know why people think this would put us in the playoffs.
The pelicans roster is far far superior to ours and before Zion came back, Ingram was leading them to a worse record than us

So next season best case scenario is we win the lottery and Blake is 100% health.

Blake Griffin / John Henson / Thon Maker
Christian Wood / Sekou Doumbouya / Donta Hall
Brandon Ingram / Tony Snell / Svi Mykhailiuk
Anthony Edwards / Luke Kennard / Khyri Thomas
Derrick Rose / Bruce Brown / Jordan Bone

Is that team good? Is it worth spending the money on Ingram? Rose and Blake will miss games, can we be respectable without them? Front court would be thin af and so would the PG. Our defense would probably be suspect.

It's ok if Ingram doesn't lead us to the playoffs though.

Like I said he's young, a big wing, combo of him, Sekou, Wood and Okongwu is a nice start up front.

A start! Not finished.

Blake and Rose misd games, we're still a Lotto team, add a guard and what's our base?

Wood
Okongwu
Sekou
Ingram
Luke
Svi
Brown
Bone
2021 Lotto pick

Yeah Rose and Blake here but we can "load manage" them.

Ain't no way we make the playoffs but it looks like a solid base to build from.

I guess the question for cap gurus is:

Can we retain Woods and max Ingram?

Is that possible?

$28,750,000 2020-2021 Ingram Max salary
$70,387,303 2020-2021 Detroit salary - 8 players
$8,131,200 1st pick
$4,000,000 2 cap holds

around 111,000,000

2020 NBA Salary Cap Max $115,000,000

So I guess the answer is no. We would have 4 mil in capspace and an expection (4-5 mil?). He should earn more than that. If we get let's say the 5th pick, we would have ~7 mil.

I was working, this are the correct numbers

$28,750,000 2020-2021 Ingram Max salary
$70,387,303 2020-2021 Detroit salary - 8 players
$5,334,100 5th pick
$1,919,466 2 cap holds

$106,390,869

2020 NBA Salary Cap Max $115,000,000

Cap Space $8,609,131

$9,755,000 MLE
$5,023,000 under the cap exception

This is less than the MLE, so I guess that might not be enough to retain Wood, who knows. If we land a better pick, we'd have even less money to offer to Wood.
