2020-2021 Salary Cap

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Sat Mar 21, 2020 5:48 pm

First of all, hope everyone is staying safe out there. Crazy times.

That being said, at some point we get back to "normal" and the NBA will finish this season, and then next season will come. But with huge changes in the expected revenue for the league this year, and assuming no alterations to the CBA, the salary cap is going to drop next year for sure. How will this affect the Pistons and free agency in general?

First of all, it makes the Drummond trade and our buyouts (rather than resigning) even better. Drummond will certainly opt in which will cause Cleveland some grief.

We don't know how much the cap will fall, but I expect we don't have a MAX player slot, but everyone else's cap space will diminish as well and there just isn't going to be a lot of money for any free agents. And this seems like it could actually push a lot of teams into the luxury tax even if they don't sign anyone.

The good news with our space we might be able to sign some free agents on the cheap in a serious way. Maybe we can get our rebuild going a little faster after all this craziness is over.

Cash is king in a recession.

NBA salary cap issues will be amplified. Some teams are WAY over the cap. If the cap falls 20% they will be in super tax hell.

Detroit among teams with most salary cap available. Wait for a team who is desperate to get rid of talented but expensive contracts. Swoop in there. Swooperman.

Leverage our potentially decent cap space to absorb bad contracts and get those picks as consolation is the best way to go for teams like us.

Cleveland is going to look so silly locking themselves for the next few years like that.

and quality players on good deals (hello derrick rose!) will be super valuable to contending teams that will have their already dire cap situations limited. if don't trade him (for hopefully a first rounder) then i'll be shaking my head all off season.

Salary Cap drop means Dre way more likely to opt in at keep that $28 million. Also, it could be good for us in the Wood negotiations as well.
