Deividas Sirvydis
When is this kid coming or have we heard anything lately? Hate the trade but would still like to at least play the kid. 6'8 with what looks like a good shooter.

Doesn't specify the time frame of "long term".
I said it before I'll say it again, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he never puts on a Pistons uniform. Averaging a cool 6.6 PPG while being a bench player (15.5 MPG) in a Euro league last season, doesn't give me any reason to change my stance on that.

He didn’t get a “bubble” invitation (while some no name G-League guys did), so I’m assuming we’ll never see him in a Pistons uniform. Lame move by Stefanski to draft this kid.

Trading #30 to Cleveland for crappy future 2nds + cash
Using the above crappy 2nds to move up and take Sirvidas
That entire sequence of events reeked of #1 Trying to dance around the luxury tax, #2 Nepotism, in doing Tellem's son a favor.
None of the decisions made in the above equation were made to actually help Detroit from a basketball/acquiring talent sense.

Re: Deividas Sirvydis
i'm not upset they spent a pick on a draft and stash player over the 30th pick, i'm a little upset they gave up three picks instead of just two to trade up.
and the majority of draft and stash prospects don't even come overseas, and most of the ones that do don't stay in the NBA long. but considering how relatively small an investment they are, it's prudent to throw some darts at prospects you like overseas.
manu ginboli was drafted and stayed in europe for the three years before coming to the NBA. jokic was a draft and stash player who didn't come to the NBA until a year after he was drafted. bojan bogdanovic was stashed for three years. some first round stashes were andrei kirilenko (stashed for two years), peja stojakovic (two years), mirotic (two years), etc.
so yeah, stashes usually don't amount to anything but there are advantages to picking them. they don't take up a roster spot, you don't have to pay them, when they do come over they need less developing, etc. when the sixers were in their hinkie-tank era they almost exclusively used their second rounders on draft and stash guys for those reasons.
also: sirvydis signing a long-term deal overseas doesn't mean much as NBA hopefuls build in buyouts into their contracts. example: luka doncic was under contact with real madrid when the mavs drafted him. they had to pay real madrid $2 million to buy out doncic's contract before he could join training camp in his rookie season. a player of sirvydis' calibre would have a much smaller buyout should the pistons want to bring him overseas (and sirvydis wanted to come).

This whole ridiculous series of ineptitude should be a strong reason Stefanski and Tellem should never be involved with the draft or key personnel moves. What a complete waste when they actually made a decent move to pick up a late 1st and SF.

Re: Deividas Sirvydis
Below are his highlights from last season
He looks a bit stronger than he was when we drafted him. I like his shot, very fast and efficient. He has some good vision, doesn't fear to go in the paint, but seems very left-handed dominant. Highlights don't show a lot of defensive plays where he surely has to improve the most
I think he can be fine as an addition to this team in 2 or 3 years with work on his body and defense.

that stood out the most to me too, and it wasn't just spot up shots too. i didn't see any examples of him coming off screens *hard* and pulling up but definitely saw him have the footwork down to have a controlled 1-2-release.
still glad we have his rights as he shows promise.

If Detroit drafted a non-stash player, odds are really high they would have been our 15th player - the roster spot that otherwise went to Christian Wood.

Kind of funny how things work out.Kilo wrote:If Detroit drafted a non-stash player, odds are really high they would have been our 15th player - the roster spot that otherwise went to Christian Wood.
Same way we could have missed on Wood if we kept Iso Joe on the roster, which would have gone with the whole "compete for the 8th seed" mindset we've had for years.
Maybe this Euro never gets on the roster, maybe he becomes a shooter off the pine in a few years.
Who knows what the future holds?

Saw him live in summer league in Vegas. He is a long shot to ever play. The whole scenario leading up to the assets lost to draft him was very concerning. Not in the Pistons best interests but maybe in the best interests of someone's son on the management team.

Or you decide to not sign tim frazier or markeiff who were cut 4 months into the season anyway.

you saw him on the summer league team when he was 3-4 years away from potentially making the team.
not being an apologist by any means, but his stint on the summer league should be taken with a monumental grain of salt.

Yeah, the Sirvydis pick was made without any intentions to have him in the fold last season.
They didn't want another contract on the books because of luxury tax concerns. Which is why they traded away #30 and the guaranteed contract that comes along with it, and got back into the very late 2nd round to take a guy whom they intended to be a 2 way player all along. 2 way contracts don't count against the salary cap or luxury tax.

It was not just how bad he looked in the limited playing time. You could see him in warm ups and some of the practices that were available if you got there early enough. If you are waiting on him to be a contributor that ever plays meaningful minutes, you will be severely disappointed. This move was not about was best for the Pistons. This is what happens when you have Stefanski and Tellum running a draft. Let's hope they don't meddle with Troy's ability to do his job...

Same here, I barely watched him recently, but his stats and performances suggest that he should aim to ever be EUroleague caliber (which he migh never be), not NBA, I think Dzanan Musa is MILES better player, and now Pistons getting him, Sirvydis has even less of a shot to do anything on this team.
COngrats on getting Musa, I am very high on him, rich mans Avdija.

Re: Deividas Sirvydis
Sounds like he's coming to the US
The Detroit Pistons draft pick Deividas Sirvydis is leaving Jerusalem on Tuesday, I was confirmed. 20-year old 2.04m shooter is going back to Lithuania, where he'll take off to the US in a few days. Players are allowed to officially sign NBA contracts starting on November 22.
