On the bright side, after the draft I considered buying League Pass again to watch a proper rebuild - and free agency just saved me all that money and time! Signing off....

This is horrendous. Troy Weaver is just another Gores “yes man”. I’m sick to my stomach.

I’m stuck between thinking he screwed us enough too get some top-3 picks over the next 3 years...

....and maybe we’re mediocre enough to be stuck getting #10 picks over the next 3 years

How is does going all in on the tank make him a Gores "yes man"? Do you think Gores is bouncing around the room, pumping his fist about getting Plumlee? Gores was obsessed with names, people he thought could bring in money and keep us on the fringe playoff treadmill. These signings are... not that.

My thinking is we're taking the old 76ers approach to these guys. A few big short term contracts to middling vets who are getting overpaid to understand and accept their role in the tank and lots of fliers on young, athletic talent who we can trade off for future picks if they show spark and get interest from other teams (assuming they aren't part of the long term plan). That keeps us from accidentally ending up in the middle of the pack.

This is a very optimistic view. I don't think that is what these acquisitions demonstrate. Not for the pay that we've supposedly signed some of these guys. And if these moves are to acquire "better" players, then we're middling once again... for years to come.

So Detroit came into the day with 23M in cap space (Ariza deal didn't happen yet) and now stretched Dedmon and McGruber to cut 14M more to have 37M to spend. SO first they'd sign and trade Wood to Houston for Ariza and #16, that cuts money down to 20M - but they've signed Plumlee for 8M, Grant for 20M and Jackson to some mystery amount (Okafor for vets minimum can be done at the end)

So I think Plumlee + Jackson money can only happen if Ariza is being S&T'd to Denver for either Plumlee or Grant.
I assume Jackson + Plumlee contracts = Ariza's 13M.

I didn’t make myself clear. I’m worried we’ll win too many games. I want to win ZERO games next season. Rose, Blake, Grant... and all of our cap space gone. Not good enough to truly bottom out.

To get fat and happy with instant gratification of making crappy free agent signings, because who cares about future cap implications.

What a freak show. We have 4 million in dead cap for the next 5 years, and we owe Houston a 1st somewhere in the future. And this is the result. I really miss Mr Davidson, since he died, we've been down hill, this is the new bottom of the pit.

Blake Griffin / Mason Plumlee / Jahlil Okafor / Isaiah Stewart
Jerami Grant / Sekou Doumbouya /
Trevor Ariza / Josh Jackson / Saddiq Bey
Svi Mikhailiuk / Dzanan Musa /
Derrick Rose / Killian Hayes /

I actually don’t think all these moves are bad. The Plumlee and Jeremi Grant Signings are, but everything else is ok. The team wasn’t going to be good anyway, you might as well tank!

Grant is slightly overpaid but good. Plumlee nonsense. Jackson and Okafor ok. Wright meh.

Except these moves are making us more competitive. Weaver (most likely under Gores orders) is trying to compete for the playoffs

I don’t see it. I believe with Plumlee starting, their is a huge hole at center. Okafor is a good backup, but he can’t defend. Grant is a tweener, who will only do well with Blake gone. We have no true SG on the roster. We are worse, though their is some young talent unlike other years.

Imagine being so desperate to overpay Mason Plumlee that you make a bunch of trades and cripple your future cap even further by stretching contracts you just traded for just to make it possible.

This is a GM for an actual NBA franchise that collects a check we’re talking about.

I can accept all the movements but:
1. Stretching contracts
2. Plumlee deal

I believe that Weaver sees Grant as a future trade asset so I expect Grant to be turned into a first. I like Wright movement, he got a nice contract which can be tradeable if he performs.

By now:

Killian-Rose
Wright-Svi
Sekou-Bey-Jackson
Grant-Griffin
Plumlee-Stewart-Okafor
