Omari Sankofa on why the Pistons may have specifically targeted Plumlee out of the gate:

Not sure how you can look at this roster and believe we'll be in playoff contention!pistonpat wrote:I think Weaver was hell bent on Grant before FA and was willing to let Woods walk from the beginning. He drafted Grant and overpaid him. Not a bad player but not worth more than Woods. Again, Weaver has taken a rebuild and done what all Piston GMs under Tom Gores does, build a team good enough to win 30-40 games, and be in the conversation for the 8th seed and then draft 10-15 and repeat all over again for the next 3 years, because he now is stretch Dedmon, McGruder which would be $18M in cap space next year and hard capping us for 3 years.. This is complete and utter incompetence as a GM. There is no way this guy learned anything from being around Sam Presti because he got taken to the cleaners in every trade he made..
Atlanta, Charlotte, Brooklyn all got a lot better this off-season.
Chicago should be a lot better too.
Washington get Wall back so should be better.
Worst in the East comes down to us v Cavs

Weaver did not draft Grant.
Grant was drafted by Philly and began his career there.

Not to mention he's killer in the pick and roll. Should really help Killian who is also known for his P&R.

Re: Mason Plumlee 3/25
Guessing that means he isn't being traded and will finish the most productive part of his career here being a protector of sorts for the kids.
As a Aussie I would have preferred Baynes at that price...pay my man
Easily could have kept Dedmon so I'll wait and see what kind of role Plumlee plays here.
I'm not expecting 28 minutes per game. That's on the high side given his career numbers

Baynes could have been had for cheaper and for a shorter timespan too.
His second year with the Raps is a team option.

Dont we call it the Detroit tax?
Ain't no one coming here for the same money they can get with a more proven organisation or a better location...

Yes, while I am upset about our free agent signings, I do think we need to remember that the price a contending team can get for a veteran player is NOT the price we could get.
I'm sure people understand that at some level- Serge Ibaka and Montrezl Harrell also got similar 2/19 deals- far better value than Grant or Plumlee- that's the privilege of being a contender.
Still, Grant and Plumlee deals suck.

Plumlee puzzles me...I hate that we could have just kept Dedmon.Snakebites wrote:Pharaoh wrote:Yes, but we are not the Raptors!Invictus88 wrote:

Grant? I'm actually intrigued! The guy is betting on himself, has given up a better team (same money) to come here for the opportunity to prove himself.
I gotta respect that.
$20 mil per is a bit steep but I'm willing to see how he handles it.
I guess I just like players that work their asses off and don't settle for being a afterthought so he gets a pass for a while.

I can respect someone betting on themselves like that, but it doesn't mean I want the team on the hook for the 60 million dollar tab.
Based on what I understand of his game, he was likely already performing his maximum all-round role offensively in Denver- and it seems to me its harder to do that role well without the playmaking of Jokic and Murray to play off of.
Its not just that I don't think he can expand his role here- I question whether he can even do his actual role effectively on this team.

Money/contract years to sign Aron Baynes + Pistons tax <<< 3/25 guaranteed.
You guarantee Baynes for both years on Raps current contract and he's a Piston right now. Still not a great deal but far better than what we got.
Grant got paid big dollars because Weaver saw him play a few good games in the playoffs. But yeah. There's no Jokic here to set him up / Murray to create space.
I've talked about this enough though. Contracts have been signed so I'm moving on.

Very true. But SVG is gone. There's not much pick-n-roll under Casey. Will he adjust his coaching to the strengths of the players Weaver has acquired? That's the question.

At least Weaver has a sense of humour!
The collection of Cs didn't last long though cause you can make the argument Stewart is a 4 leaving us with Plumlee and Okafor as the one 5s on the roster

In the zoom call with Okafor Plumlee actually used the word rebuild.
Wonder if we can fine him $4 mil
