Guess as long as we're all being negative and squash any hope around here no one can be disappointed like we have been for the last decade
Snakebites wrote:It’s been 4 games.

Yeah yeah. I know I say that about every player. But it’s true at this stage.

Definitely better than 4 bad games, but I still feel like we shouldn’t have signed him. If he’s traded for assets I’ll gladly eat crow.

Fair enough- I'll explain myself better.

There's a difference between evaluating performance and evaluating what you think the players' trajectory with the team will be. One can be evaluated fairly quickly, the other needs a broader view.

With Hayes- I dislike how he's played (how could you not?) but am still hopeful that he could still figure it out and eventually be a starter. I think what they're doing right now isn't working and he probably needs to come off the bench. He doesn't look ready in the slightest. I still believe he has the tools, but I don't think starting is the right spot for him right now. I think you can formulate that opinion after 4 games without labeling the player as a bust- and that's all I was doing in that thread.

With Grant, yeah, he's played pretty well so far. I think you can validly question whether the volume is sustainable and there's other things you can pick at, but yeah, he's been solid. My position was always that even if he plays well it still wasn't the right decision- it's additional longterm salary commitment on a guy who's game is built to complement stars, not raise the floor of a bad team. And I think despite his strong start that's still true.

I still see being able to turn him into an asset as the ONLY way to make that signing an eventual positive- and I have my reservations.

For those that keep trying to create a false narrative this is a direct copy and paste from the Arpund the League thread and its the final time I'm gonna bother with this stuff:

It's not about believing in the FO without hesitation - it's about waiting to see how this thing shakes out.

Weaver arrived and if you judge him by what we thought we knew on Draft Day the guy is a genius who obviously learnt a lot from Presti in OKC.

Then free agency began and details of our Draft Day acquisitions came out and so much of that for me was "Hang on, WTF is this?"

Then we took a shot at Jackson and Okafor and I'm thinking "There we go, that's more like it."

Then we sign Ellington, stretch Smith & Dedmon, sign Plumlee, cut Musa and I'm back to scratching my head.

Half doesn't make much sense. The other half are quality moves. So we'll wait and see

And if you continue to believe I have blind faith in our FO despite my numerous posts to the contrary that's on you man.

I think you should stop being so aggressive. People are permitted to have opinions that do not match your own, and I think you should consider why you find those so threatening.

Beyond that, you expressed this same sort of fervor in your support for Van Gundy. I think it's unfortunate that you're doing the same for Weaver even after seeing how that turned out. Sometimes general managers make bad decisions because they're bad at their jobs. It is entirely possible that Weaver belongs to that category. We will see, and whether or not folks here draw negative conclusions won't change what we find out.

When the time comes, near the end of his deal, I hope we can flip him for Myles Turner.

I don’t want to flip Grant for anyone. He’s a stud. Look at Denver since he and Plum left. They are terrible. It’s possible Grant is part of our future.

We may have found a young, talented player who wanted the challenge of leading a rebuilding team, so naturally we immediately pivot to how we can get rid of him and possibly land some disgruntled castoff from another team.

Is the narrative changing?

Why are some so quick to jump?

He reminds me of Tobias. He's got that sort of mechanical, well rehearsed style of game. He's a pretty good athlete with good enough footwork and has a nice outside stroke, so it works for him. I don't think he has a great feel for the game and I wouldn't trust his ability to read and react to what good defenses will do. Players like this in a big role usually get exposed in a playoff pressure type atmosphere. He's ok for where the Pistons are at, but I wouldn't want him to be anything more than a 3rd option on a genuine contender.

I was just looking up Grant's stats and saw that we have the same birthday. So yeah, great signing.

Likely the tipping point in signing Grant over Wood.

3D chess, revealed move by move. Weaver''s scouting is thorough.

Sadly, that’s just not true. Wood is a far more efficient scorer, and while I’m ok with saying Grant is a better defender, it’s not enough to make up the difference. Once you factor in Wood making 30% or so less money, it’s a tough pill to swallow.

Still, what’s done is done, and i’m glad Grant is playing pretty well in his expanded offensive role.

Wood's a more efficient scorer, but I don't know if I'd go as far to say that it's so far ahead of Grant's defensive ability to make him the better player. At least not yet.

Over this season, I'd be interested to see Wood's shooting in games where Harden's resting or after he's traded (assuming that happens). It would be a better comp in terms of role and defensive attention to what Grant is getting on the Pistons.

I'm skeptical about :

a) Wood's ability to score in second halves and crunch times (he looks like those players who score a lot in the first two quarters and then eclipse themselves) ;

b) Wood's defense ;

c) Wood's attitude towards 2+ years.

Grant is less flashy, but way more balanced and has an already known floor as a 3&D commodity worth at least 15 millions per year. His worst scenario is to be a slightly overpaid top tier role player.

I was surprised by the Grant signing, not necessarily in a good way. I was thinking 20 million a year, isn’t that reserved for really really good players? I just didn’t know that Grant fell into that category. I love his motor, he is dynamic, he is versatile and isn’t ball dominant like Blake. He gets his points in so many different ways. I am glad to be surprised in a good way by the Pistons management for the first time in a long time.

Denver is struggling but it has more to do with lineup continuity and injuries rather than Plumlee and Grant leaving. We have 7 new players so we do have to settle on lineups, regain chemistry, learn to play together.....really not uncommon IMO.

As for your stud, his stats are hollow IMO and what, he's led you to a whopping 1-5 record, that's leadership !! :banghead:

I get wanting to keep him around, he's a good player most DEN fans were disappointed to see him leave. But no need to get self-righteous, cocky or even just snarky, it doesn't work when you're the worst team in the league.

He's playing a lot different compared to his preseason games where he looked like a caricature of Lebron but extra emphasis on bad. Since then he's dialed it down and is playing way more in control and with much more efficient...energy?

If he keeps this up, he's a top 3 MIP candidate pretty handily, no?

Denver fans sure seem insecure about Grant.
Every thread on the GB about Grant is always filled with Nuggets fans making sure that everybody knows the reasons the Nuggets have been awful this season ( a whopping 2-4 record) isn't because Grant and Plumlee left.

I'm gonna guess you haven't actually watched a single one of our games, so your opinion on what is hollow or not is most likely irrelevant. If you have watched our games, then your opinion is just wrong.
