Trade Targets - Guys on rookie deals not getting a chance.

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Thu Feb 25, 2021 1:02 pm

We've got a few assets in Wright, Ellington and perhaps even Plumlee.

We should be looking not only at future draft consideration, but also some younger guys on rookie deals not really getting a chance. Especially from teams trying to compete right now.

DSJ is looking like a solid pickup thus far in limited games. He's a perfect example of a guy you take a flyer on that has potential to blossom into something more if given the chance. Josh Jackson could be another example, of a guy who last year was on a rookie deal still and then finally started to find a groove here in Detroit.

Are there some young lottery pick to mid first rounders that haven't panned out with their current teams? We should perhaps take a look and dive even further into this youth movement trying to find the next guy that can take a Christian Wood like jump if he's just given a chance out there.

Here's an example: Delon Wright for Onyeka Okongwu. Guy was the #6 pick this past year just ahead of Kilian but he has struggled to see the court. It's entirely possible Atlanta still has much higher hopes for him and wouldn't trade him at all, BUT Rondo also hasn't been good as a backup PG for them and they are really pushing for a playoff run this year. It's the kind of trade you can at least pick up the phone and see where their mindset is at.

Somewhere out there, there is a GM ready to give up on a young guy too soon. Lets try and get the next Khris Middleton type player. Someone able to come out and develop and thrive in a system with a bunch of younger players and no win/loss expectations where they can play without fear of getting yanked for mistakes.

To add on this, we should also be an attractive FA destination for young players that haven't worked out that want a chance to try and prove themselves. It's likely why Jackson wanted to come play for us and will hopefully help draft more FAs this summer. Perhaps we split our MLE between 2 or 3 guys that are in that scenario.

MO BAMBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Orlando is notorious for not developing young players and giving up on them. We got Tobias for free. Bamba could be good, but Orlando decided to go with Vucevic a couple of years ago.

I don't think any 2020 rookies would be available, but more year 2 and especially 3 & 4 types who could be good "change of scenery" tryouts. Mo Bamba is a name that seems to be floated as available.

I could also wee Weaver moving the Charlotte and Toronto SRP's he had previously acquired.

Problem here is Orlando is also in the lottery and thus wouldn't want a "win now" piece. Mo probably gets a later FRP still from a playoff team looking to steal him. Best Detroit could probably offer is Sekou Doumbouya centered package. I'd do it.

Why would you think that? Orlando's core is older they could still make the playoffs.

Delon Wright would do wonders for them. He could play next to Fultz or Cole Anthony and help them and he would help them to chase the playoffs this season.

DSJ and Ellington for Bamba?

Another younger guy who might be available is Denver’s Bol Bol

Another young guy that would be tempting might be Giles, with the Blazers

Orlando is a farm team for the rest of the NBA and has been for quite some time now. Any of their young players in their 2nd, or 3rd year are available. The Magic are one of the weirdest run teams in the league.

Jalen Lecque- cheapest of these players, also youngest. Good, not great g league numbers for a player that went undrafted out of high school. If there was a spot open after promoting Lee he’d be worth a look.

Mo Bamba - he has $5.9 million this year and something like $8 million next season. Basketball iq is poor, but he’s still young enough to develop. Magic don’t plan on a coaching change, they might just trade him to save the money for next season.

Kevin Knox- on the Knicks books for something like $6 million next season. I don’t think he’ll ever live up to where he was drafted, but seems like the definition of someone who needs a change of scenery.

Jerome Robinson- wizards guard on their books for something like $4 million this season only. Purely a bust, but good g league numbers. If they somehow cut him, he’d be worth a look for the remainder of the season. Would prefer other players, but he wouldn’t be the end of the world either.

Chandler Hutchison- going through something, might benefit from a different team. On books for $4 million next season.

I want Gary Trent Jr from Portland. Would be a nice two way SG for us. Dont they can afford to keep him too when they need wings or Forwards and CJ comes back.

I thought the pistons was gonna grab Giles in the last FA especially with C.Wood being gone.

Mo Bamba would be interesting wonder why the Magics stopped developing him.

I don't think we'll be making a move like this. We've already got developmental guys at every position this year - and generally more than 1. The only way I see it happening is if they have given up on svi or sekou and would be swapping out that spot in the rotation. You can't really "develop" 8+ young players at once. You need at least a couple glue pieces to keep that development on track.

Pistons might attempt a move like this. I don't see how Svi or Sekou fit here long term, and yet one's shooting and the other's youth may still be tempting. Weaver has shown no hesitation to deal out players he didn't bring in.

That's who I was thinking of when I read this post, with Weaver's eye for talent and Casey getting all these guys to improve/develop (Wright/Plumlee/Grant/Jackson, maybe DSJ and the rookies), would be a good strategy.

He's not a bust and too young, staying with Portland how about Simons?

This is a great discussion topic. I love the concept but I also think its a big stretch to think we can pry a recent 2020 lotto pick from a team without giving up future firsts. Frankly our expendable vets just don't have the value in a trade like this. Its certainly worth Weaver making a phone call though just to make sure :D

Philly is in win now mode for sure, and we already know they have inquired about Wright. Wondering what prospects they would let go in a deal. They also have interest in Lowry.

I dunno if it’s that they’re a farm team. I think it’s more that they just don’t draft many “keepers”. Neither do we.
