There’s still only going to be 15 roster spots, right?

Yeah I know it’s slightly higher during COVID but you get my point.

When you have that many, you really have no choice but to trade multiples to move up or trade some for other assets.

There are only so many roster spots.

At some point they have to turn into something. I wonder if they’ll cash in on some of them by trading for established stars or literally play the lottery

So they’re going to reboot the shoe hoarders for NBAtv.

This is just flay out insane. I get wanting to have draft capital, but I’m of the mindset that roughly 3-4 a year is the ideal range.

Maybe they are going to split this rebuild between Oklahoma City and Seattle

Obviously, you can't actually draft that many guys, but it's a heck of a war chest.

Also, it's usually pretty easy to trade a current year pick for some future pick, especially second rounders.

They still need to choose the right guy or make the right trade which sometimes is not that easy regardless how many picks you have.

Will be really interesting to see where they peak over the next 10 seasons. Do all those picks get them to the promiseland? Do they make the NBA Finals? Do they end up with any playoff wins? How many more years will they not be a playoff team after making the playoffs last season?

i imagine they do what the sixers did during the hinkie era where they use the vast majority of their second round picks on draft and stash players so they don't use up roster spots.

it's going to be tough enough to fit in all their first round picks on the roster though.

this sums up how i feel. having a ton of late first round picks doesn’t really excite me that much. hell, even ainge had all those great picks in boston and somehow screwed that up royally.

Having all those picks could really pay off if you have a guy with a really good eye for talent.

That guy is now the GM of the Pistons.

Have you looked at OKC's draft history the last 10 years or so?

Who knows how much weight Presti put into Weaver's thoughts/vision, but their draft history leaves a lot to be desired.

In any event, OKC's future is looking pretty damn promising right now.

I feel like that's too many picks to have at one time. If I'm an opposing GM I'd constantly be asking for an extra 1st rounder from OKC because they legitimately can't draft all of these players.

Sure, but that still means the picks have diminishing value the more you have.

And first rounders of course come with contract commitments. They have to trade them. And when you have to trade them it depresses value.

Don’t get me wrong- it’s a great pool of assets I’d love to have that presents great opportunity- this isn’t sour grapes. But there is a timeline where they fail to leverage it properly.

I make up in my mind that there may be a piston benefit. Slight. Because Weaver came from OKC and hypothetically speaking has a great relationship with their organization. Rapport and communication is already there to possibly swoop in and get a few of those pics.

At least it is some thing.

Whomever wins the lottery this year can King's Ransom the #1 OA and Oklahoma native Cade Cunningham to the Thunder for wherever they land in the draft plus 2-3 other FRP assets.

If they want, they can continue growing their stash by trading 1-for-2 or 2-for-3 with teams that have a specific player they want to trade up for. Like interest in a bank, they are in position to grow their pot while still using 2-3 picks/year.

Personally I'd probably prefer to just keep Cade.

I guess it would depend on where they land though.

Trying not to indulge in such fantasies given the relative unlikelihood (wherever we finish in the standings) of landing the number one pick.

why would anyone do that? that’s just asking to be caught holding the bag. you take cade, and move on, end of story. OKC can enjoy taking fliers on guys in the mid-to-late 20s for the next 7 years.
