It's weird that they would extend him when he's completely gone against the front office's vision/wishes all year.

My bet: this was a promise before the season started, assuming he stuck with the plan, ran out the kids, and let the losses pile up. Not that we would have won more than 30 anyway, but it made a big difference.

One year extension is sorta strange. I guess the $7M bonus year is for finishing 2nd last this season - now he just has to lose the next two games. This also indicates to me that this is the one and done restoration season as Casey wouldn't be signing on to more rebuild years.

He could also just like the players and staff he is working with and wants to stay; regardless of whether there is a rebuild going on (or maybe because of it). I just don't see this extension as being a sign of anything other than Weaver approving of his development of the young guys.

Or it could be that Casey is an excellent coach despite his well-documented drawbacks. I'm thrilled.

I see this as Weaver acknowledging that he and Casey are on the same page and he trusts Casey to develop a contender by the 23-24 season with the players he acquires.

Another possibility is that Casey told him he'd win the next two games unless he got another year.

I like it. I feel that Dwane Casey teams have always moved in the right direction. He overachieved way back with Minnesota. He was part of the Dallas championship. He overachieved year after year in Toronto (and I think he'd have a ring if they kept him after getting Kawhi), and he's kept a very positive atmosphere while developing the youth here while fulfilling his mandate to lose games.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

To my recollection it hasn't happened in a while? But yeah, if Weaver didn't like him from the start and they weren't fully simpatico before the season, there would've been a mid season firing by now. I think this was the expectation, commit to the rebuild and get a nice retirement package at the end

The fact that Weaver didn't bother to make any coaching moves early on kind of signaled this intent too, since new GM's often like to bring their own guys they worked with on prior teams and etc

Young guys like Casey, probably because he played them so much. Weaver likes that Casey has done everything he has asked of him.

He was always a coach players liked playing for. The real question, when you're trying to win, is whether or not he's good enough on the XOs and at making adjustments. He certainly got his team to play hard and play the right way for most of the year, minus the little bit of hero ball we've seen more of down the tank stretch.

He's the perfect stepping stone coach so that timeline is probably right. He can for sure bring this young group into the playoffs its just a matter of whether or not he is the right guy after that.

Even if you like the guy, I don't really see the benefit to committing to any coach longer than we already have, especially not when we're in a transition period where our needs may evolve over the course of that time.

Obviously Casey got VERY lucky in that while trying to win every game and make a late season push, he’s such a stupid coach that he only managed to win 20 games. Pure luck relative to his contract while being a total failure at what he was trying to do.

Perfectly put in my opinion. I’ll also go on record and say he’s not the XOs guy and once we are championship contenders we’ll move on as Toronto did from him as well as when we did from Carlisle.

Lol only reason I said that is because it seemed like everyone responded seriously to it.

I don't get the extra year. It seems like after next season would be the time to possibly extend him. Let's be honest, nobody is going to come pounding on his door.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I don’t think it’s about people coming pounding on his door but more about the development of the young kids.

This gives Casey the keys, he’s the guy. This lets the team know he’s driving, it doesn’t matter what his record is. Casey is no lame duck coach. No going over Casey’s head. no Mutiny. No BS. This is Casey’s culture. Play the way you’re supposed to, play hard, minimize mistakes. Or your ass will be in the dog house and will be sitting on the bench.

Agreed.

And to add to this, Dwane had 2 years left on his contract. Which means they could have played out all of next season, then decide what to do before he'd be entering "lame duck" status.

I really see no incentive to this move.
