Corey Joseph's Contract becomes fully guaranteed Aug 1st - What should we do with him?
Corey Joseph's contract becomes fully guaranteed on Sunday August 1st 2021. The NBA draft is scheduled for Thursday July 29th.
Corey Joseph played really decent for us down the stretch, but he also only has $2.4 million guaranteed on his $12.6 million contract. He could be major luxury tax relief and or salary cap room for a team that trades for him and then waives him. It's certainly possible that Weaver specifically targeted his contract knowing it would be movable on draft night for some range of first round draft pick.
That said, what should be do with CoJo?

I’d like to trade him if we can get a pick and the contract coming back isn’t too crazy.
If the deal isn’t there, waive him.

Does his deal need to be fully guaranteed in order to trade him?
If not then absolutely trade him for whatever prospect/pick we can get.
OR dump him if there's nothing that fits

I believe it does not need to be fully guaranteed.
I’m still not seeing instant cap space in this FA class being worth a first rounder. Maybe a very late one I guess. If it’s not an unreasonable deal I’d be into it.

Guessing two years, $25 million of returned bad contracts. I’d probably do it, but I don’t think Weaver will.

My money is on weaver picking up the option and then stretching him.

Young guys need to play and CoJo is expensive to keep, so I expect he'll be gone. I think he was a good guy to bring in. Might have been good for Hayes to train with him. Thought I saw a little of the same 'deliberate big strong guard' play from both at the end of the season. He has put together a solid NBA career.

The odds of keeping him are for all practical purposes zilch.
He's not worth anything close to that cost and doesn't have upside. He probably gets a look as a potential backup from some playoff teams if he's a free agent after his performance with us towards the end of the year. He was gonna have a tough time based on his performance in Sacramento last year.

If a team needs a backup PG, he's probably a half MLE type signing. Ish Smith got 2 years $12 million from the Wizards and I'd expect CoJo would perhaps be worth something similar. Then again, you do see backup rotation worthy PG's like Reggie Jackson sign for the vet min so you never know.
If he was 2 or 3 years younger I'd be ok keeping him with the hope he'd be happy and sign on as a backup but he's just a bit too old for the rebuild.
The big question will be whether or not Weaver can use his contract to land another first rounder in this draft.

I’m still traumatized by Reggie Jackson. The last thing I want is another guy whose primary tendency is to dribble 15 seconds off the shot clock on every possession.

I’ll be absolutely shocked if we pick up his option and keep him.
I mean it’s a $10 million difference. It’ll be interesting to see where he goes.

Of course he won't be picked up. Impossible to say on trading him for picks and a bad contract without knowing what they are.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I have been told that if Joseph is traded, that his contract will become fully guaranteed, we can't trade him for a 12 million dollar salary dump (and assets) in order for the new tam to cut him before Aug 1., and only have his 2.5 million guarantee count against their cap. Apparently this was a loop hole that was closed in the recent CBA.

Thought I'd seen that somewhere on the trade board.Drwho17 wrote:I have been told that if Joseph is traded, that his contract will become fully guaranteed, we can't trade him for a 12 million dollar salary dump (and assets) in order for the new tam to cut him before Aug 1., and only have his 2.5 million guarantee count against their cap. I kind of feel like if he sticks around he’d get a role like McGruder had this season. It’s better for him to get this contract declined and sign just about any deal with a team that has a decent role for him.

Re: Corey Joseph's Contract becomes fully guaranteed Aug 1st - What should we do with him?
With landing the #1 pick, there is more reason to keep Joseph than there was before we got lucky.
#1 With the high $10 million 1st pick salary this season, we for sure won't have more than MLE now. We also are far enough below the luxury tax level that having CoJo's salary doesn't push us anywhere near the luxury tax so no worries on that end either.
#2 Having his expiring deal could be beneficial to make salary match at the trade deadline.
#3 He averaged 12 PPG for us on good shooting %s with a good assist to TO ratio as well. Having him in the starting backcourt next to Cade may help make Cade's first half season in the league a bit easier than it would if Cade was starting next to Hayes.
#4 There may be some good will for CoJo and his agent if he does play out the entire year and plays well, when looking at his next contract in 2022. Plus we'd have his bird rights in 2022 if we pick up his option.
#5 With our team being so young, you want to keep a few vets... and if Plumlee is a possible trade piece because Stewart is playing so well it's good to have another vet like CoJo to remain on the team if Plumlee gets moved for a young guy.
At the end of the day, its just a matter of whether or not ownership is ok with paying the extra $5 to $6 million above market value that CoJo's contract would pay him.

Corey Joseph is a dime-a-dozen, slightly above minimum contract, level player. The idea of paying him $12 mil to play here this year is ridiculous. Winning the lottery does nothing to change that.

I would bet he would get half MLE somewhere to be a backup PG. He's a legit rotation player for a playoff team, and has been in his career. A team like the Suns could/would sign him to backup Paul if Cameron Payne ends up moving on to a bigger deal somewhere else.
Of course, its still fairly likely the team cuts him loose at that price but there are certainly some reasons to keep him as well, as stated in my previous post.
