Billups gets a gig

Portland has hired Billups as their new head coach.
I'm a little bummed out. With Chauncey finally working as an assistant coach now, I felt things were lining up nicely for him to replace Casey in another year or two. He'd have been an ideal successor.

maybe he can get some experience in Portland before taking over from Casey one day

If we and Billups were interested in that he’d have already been an assistant for us.
The Blazers still have some moves to make- they’ve reached their ceiling with their roster as currently constructed.

I'm kinda bummed that Becky didn't get an opportunity, but didn't really expect it.

I wonder if she's ever been seriously considered.
The cynic in me says teams just want to be perceived as considering a woman for a job. I'd hate to think she's become the "token" interview for certain teams, but I wouldn't be shocked to learn that was the case.

The league should be absolutely ashamed if they let Becky be the new "Jeff Van Gundy" in how he's always in coaching rumor mills even though he hasn't coached full time in like 10 years(?)
No person deserves that treatment

To be clear, I don't have evidence to suggest that's what's happening here, and I hope it is not.

Getting owners to make the step to a female head coach will likely take multiple attempts before one breaks through. The ceiling is cracking though and it's progress.

To be honest, I barely know what any of our own assistants are good at. I can look at Chauncey as another team's assistant and feel he'd be a good coach because I got an up close look at him for 7+ years as the brains to a very successful run.
With Hammon, what are y'all pointing to to say she'd be a good candidate? I mean, I get there are some posters that dive deep into things like that. But sometimes it reeks of being the in thing to say somebody would be a great candidate.
I'm open to thoughts on her.

nothing cynical about thinking that, and until she lands a job, that’s likely always gonna be the line of thought.
in today’s world, especially in the NBA, PR is everything.

I don't know, I'll leave it for others to speak on.
But whether she is a good candidate or not, I certainly hope she's not being called in for interviews so teams can appear to be more inclusive while not being.

Obviously, that's exactly what happened.
There are 4 African American head coaches out of 30 teams - less than 15% of the league
In a league made up of 75% African American players
The NBA has a long way to go in - this is just a way to get positive press/female fans

100% agreed on inclusivity. The reality is that there isn't a large pool of potentially qualified female applicants (at least not qualified in terms of traditional NBA resumé) because women are under-represented at other levels of team power structures- that needs to improve.
And regardless of Hammon's particular qualifications as a potential Head Coach, we should all at least be able to agree that she shouldn't be having her time wasted on bad-faith interviews in the name of inclusivity.

That's 13.3% (repeating, of course) in a general population that's 13% black so that's actually what you'd expect to see, quite frankly. The fact that 75% of the players are black has nothing to do with how many black coaches there should be. By that rationale there are plenty of jobs that should have nearly zero black managers solely because there are nearly zero black workers; my job is one of them. Job qualifications have nothing to do with skin color, and obviously first and foremost in ANY job is previous experience. Should a player who spent 15 years in the league be considered more qualified to coach than a guy--regardless of race--who spent those same 15 years coaching?
What you're suggesting is literally discrimination.

Figured this thread would eventually head in this direction. Keep it civil, folks.
This isn't the CA board.

Nothing uncivil has been posted but yes, it's off topic.
Although I feel I should earn some cred for my sly little Leroy Jenkins reference there.

Mine was a pre-emptive post. Just letting folks know that I'm watching.
I don't mind a little discussion along these lines since it does pretain to the league- my CA board comment was more about tone than content- and that board doesn't have the tone I want for this board.

So no props for my Leroy Jenkins reference?
Thanks for nothing.

For me it’s the recommendation she gets from coach pop and the fact that she’s successfully coached their team in the summer league and I’m pretty sure she’s had to step in for a game or two.
Beyond that I don’t know. But a lot of head coaches honestly get jobs because of a solid recommendation. And honestly with the guy who the pacers just fired and the amount of retreads that keep getting chances, I don’t see why she doesn’t deserve a shot.

You alluded to a much more macro oriented problem. There's too many retreads in every league, from top to bottom (front office to low level assistants/coaches) that keep getting hired/get one last shot out of pure recommendation or just from name recognition. Kidd and SVG should never have been hired again and JVG is still getting put in coaching rumor mills just because due to this exact reason
But I don't know who had the article but coaches and referees are supposedly really tight about who gets in the inner circle because at the end of the day, it's a long held establishment of a good ol boy's club from years past. Which is why it's always a surprise when you see a relatively newcomer be promoted to the ranks of head coach instead of some recognizable name
