Who do we target with our $18 million of cap space?

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Fri Jul 30, 2021 5:12 am

It seems like Plumlee was most likely traded to create cap space to sign another key piece to the puzzle this offseason.

Before this move it seemed unlikely that Detroit would be in position to spend on another FA, but now it seems like we should be looking at this August 2nd Free Agency as another big day for us.

We're most likely going after a single player that's going to be more than the MLE.... unless there is some other yet to be announced traded that we needed more cap space for.

Gotta be a big, right? Stewart is the only guy on the roster that can reasonably be expected to perform adequately defensively at the 5.

I think that a good fit might be Norman Powell. We need a wing scorer. I like L Ball but I don’t see how he fits with Cunningham and Hayes.

Yeah im guessing Allen or Duncan.

Idk if I love the Allen love but what do I know.

Troy Weaver could basically fall over with a sprained ankle at this point and before knowing the full extent of his injury im offering my heart/lung whatever it takes.

Christ he already took my chest hair

I think it's a big. I don't want Okafor on the team next year, so....Allen/Holmes/Portis?

It’s crazy but I would sign Drummond to the MLE.

Serious note if we traded Plumlee..only one of F.Jackson/Diallo surviving in my opinion and if he's counting pennies already...and he gave up assets for Diallo.....

Spoiler I think they are both gone.

Their cap hold are small, you can sign someone and after that give our 3 FAs their contracts.

I sure hope they don’t make a run at Demar DeRozen given his history with Casey and Gores win now desire.

DDR and Casey are buddies. Gores wants to win now. We now have cap space. Seems like the perfect match.

Money is on Allen, with hopes of going over the cap for one year to sign either Diallo or F. Jacskon to one year. My money if on Diallo since Josh Jackson has one year left on his deal and we don't have his bird rights.

Lol Drummond would never come back here to play backup center for the MLE.

I wouldn't mind one of Richaun Holmes, Nerlens Noel, or Harry Giles. Don't think Jarett Allen is a possibility unless we overpay and the Cavs just roll with Mobley as their starting center.

Bringing Drummond back for even the league minimum would be the worst thing that could happen to this hard working hustling culture. No thanks.

I have a feeling we already know where the money is going even if front offices and free agents can't officially discuss business yet.

Small thing to note with the trade of Plumlee to Charlotte.

They were expected to have approx 22 mil in cap space for free agency. They're down to 14 mil now.

We essentially didn't have cap space as it was basically the MLE. We're not likely to have 18 mil to spend.

So:

While it's weird we executed a salary dump of Plumlee after 1 season we did gain significant cap flexibility while simultaneously harming the cap flexibility of a "rival".

Plus there's the added wrinkle where reports state Gores wants to win ASAP so maybe Weaver traded away a quality vet mentor to reduce the likelihood of winning next season?

Hard to see a collection of Hayes, Cade, Bey, Grant, Stewart, Lee, Diallo, FJ, JJ and Sirvy win a load of games next season regardless of who we sign in free agency
