What the ....?

Post#1 » by flow » Sun Aug 22, 2021 11:30 am

Apparently only people living within 75 miles of LCA are permitted to buy game tickets. And apparently no other team has imposed such a restriction.

It makes no sense for sales but it makes sense to not like Toronto fans come in

So how are they planning on controlling the market or resellers

Interesting. Obviously they must know the breakdown of the zip codes of the majority of the tickets sold to LCA. If they encapsulate 95% of their ticket buyers in 75 miles and get rid of the outside people that could enhance the home court advantage. Or maybe decrease the frustration people feel when they can't get tickets and a bulls fan or raps fan get them. Not sure I agree with the equality of this process for fans who live outside (like me), but I guess they call them "home" games for a reason now.

I've never seen anything like it. It's obnoxious. And possibly illegal.

That's weird.

It's not like the Pistons sell out on the regular. They want to make money, too, right?

i don't know my michigan geography that well but it looks like anyone from saginaw, lansing, etc. are not getting tickets. heck the north end of flint is probably out of range too.

is it unheard of for people from there to go to games? a comparable scenario if this happened in toronto would be people from kitchener or peterborough go to games which i don't think happens very often.

of course it would suck for anyone visiting detroit and not be able to buy tickets.

This would make sense, except Windsor Canada (where they get a lot of Toronto fans from) is literally right across the bridge, well within range of this requirement.

So, as long as my buddy in Lake Orion buys my tickets, I (from Lansing) will be good to go? Or, I'll only be able to buy tix from Stubhub resellers whose billing address is <75 miles from the Arena? This sounds like an absolutely ridiculous rule.

Yes, I am truly offended that I live more than 75 miles from LCA and now cannot buy tickets to a Pistons game directly from the team and pay full ticket price rather than getting them from a reseller for less than face value. This indeed a travesty.

Oh, and the city of Detroit sucks anyway; the team never should have moved from the Palace.

Get a grip.

Nobody has information you don’t.

It appears there is no way to stop out of area people from purchasing tickets in this fashion.

I have no idea what this post means.

You can skip the intentional obtuseness and virtue signaling.

Almost no one is buying tickets directly from the team and paying full price when they can be purchased at the resellers for less than face value. That's not a new concept.

As far as being obnoxious, well, unless you live more than 75 miles away and were dead set on paying face value for tickets I can only say your sensitivity far exceeds your acumen for fiscal responsibility.

Possibly illegal? Yeah, ok. Certainly it's believable that the organization made that decision without consulting with legal.

There. That should clean that up.

Don't know, don't care, and neither do you. The reality is that anyone who really wants tickets can get them.

Not sure why they just wouldn’t have made it Michigan resident. Even that seems unethical but at least I could wrap my head around it better.

They are trying to slow the spread of Covid throughout the state. Southeast Michigan has been the hotspot in the state. If they keep it just those residents then you don't have people from Grand Rapids, Lansing, Saginaw, northern MI, etc coming down the LCA and getting covid and bringing it back with them. This is how they will try to justify being at 100% capacity even though the numbers are rising everywhere.

That said, it will be easy to just buy from non direct sources. I am sure there is zero chance that they check IDs for listed addresses at the door its simply a way to not allow the ticket sale at checkout. It could end up driving up secondary market prices a bit as more people will be going that route than normal.

I don't understand how keeping ticketholders confined to the local Detroit area will help prevent the spread of COVID? Are the case numbers extraordinarily low in the southeast Michigan compared to the rest of the country that they have to create a fan bubble of sorts?

Honestly at this point I wouldn't drive 75 miles and spend money to attend a sporting event anyway. Shoot, I live 33 miles from LCA--almost all highway--and unless you're going to pick me up, take me there and back and buy all my food and booze to boot, I'm probably passing.

Related side note: I work in sales in the automotive industry and my company always had Red Wings and Tigers tickets. Kinda cool but then there was an expectation to get customers out and no one ever wanted to go because the only games we got tickets for were Monday-Thursday (because according to my boss Friday/Saturday/Sunday is when everyone wants to spend time with their families) and only night games (the Tigers also have 1:05 weekday games). So even though if you're the customer everything is free (game, parking, dinner, drinks) nobody wanted to go to a 7:30 game on a weeknight then be tired as hell at work the next day, especially to watch either of two bad teams. Anyway, we didn't get tickets last year because of the lost revenue due to COVID, and it looked like we weren't going to get tickets this year either. Then a month ago my boss announced that he got four seats at the Lions instead--awesome. Yeah, it's the Lions but it's something different and you just don't normally get a chance to go to many NFL games. Then last week my boss announced that he had gotten Wings tickets again, just not as many games...and I was literally pissed. I thought "How out of touch can you get? No one wanted to go last year, the Wings aren't any better this year, and the Pistons JUST GOT THE #1 DRAFT PICK. HELLOOOO, McFly?!?" So now I'm on a mission to find customers that I can just give the Wings tickets to since I have no interest in going even though it means a free meal anywhere I want to take the customer. It's not worth the effort even with everything being free.
