Would you do this trade for Ben Simmons?

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Tue Sep 21, 2021 8:34 pm

Ben is apparently playing hard ball about not appearing at camp... which makes me think Philly knows the longer Ben sits out the lower his trade value gets. I assume they move him before the start of the season, which is less than a month away now.

That said, we do have two Klutch clients on our squad already, but its also clear that Ben really wants to go to California so I'm not sure how happy he would really be here. That alone is a big reason to hesitate on trading for him, not including his offensive struggles and $150 million contract over the next four seasons.

That said, getting a young 25 year old elite defender could have some benefits as well.

There is really only one trade that works in the trade checker salary wise (since we have so many recently signed FA's), and that is the following.

Grant + Hayes + Josh Jackson for Ben Simmons + Tyrese Maxey (both Rich Paul clients).

Probably not. I think we'd regret trading for a guy making $35M+ a year who can't shoot at his position.

I wouldn't be able to stomach watching another player thats very limited on offense and is one of the worst free throw shooter in the league. We just got done with the Drummond era and I wanna see what hayes brings this season so its a easy no for me.

If Simmons contract was shorter I would be a hell of a lot more open to the deal. If he doesn't work out, it'll be a nightmare if the team can't move on from him.

Unless this team gets really good, really fast, I don't see how Grant is a part of a title team here in Detroit, so moving him for a younger core piece is not a bad move, and he would fit really well in Philly.

Simmons could absolutely start at the PF position here, with Jackson, or Diallo starting at the 2. The problem is fo course his complete lack of shooting, but it would put another elite ball handler on the court with Cade.

I'm torn on it as Simmons is an elite talent, with a massive hole in his game.

No.

And I posted that literally without even reading the trade proposal.

I don't want Simmons on the Pistons regardless of the deal. I think the new culture would flush down a black hole with an unwilling shooter making top dollar for four years. I also think Simmons may pull this stunt again during this massive contract and whoever is holding the bag next will be looked upon as fools that set their franchise back for years.

The only way the Pistons trade for Simmons is if Weaver and Casey's egos get involved and they think they can fix him. I hope they're much smarter than that.

Non Shooting ball handlers aren't the main or the 2nd best player of a championship team. He is being paid like he is.

If he could shoot this would be different but since he can't its a No.

You probably just start the 6-11 Simmons at the 4. Positions don’t mean the same thing when you have a ball handler that big.

Not saying I’d do the trade, but positions wouldn’t be a concern.

Either you think Simmons can figure it out or you don’t. If you don’t, he’s not positive value and there really isn’t any deal you’ll accept for him.

Either way, the Sixers still appear to be valuing him as though he can, and thus won’t do this deal, let alone include Maxey.

Assuming that Simmons could be convinced to come to Detroit, I would do the trade. Getting him out of Philly and placing him in a more comfortable, supportive environment with a great coach in Casey should increase his confidence and perhaps even his scoring. He is a great defensive player, passer, and rebounds well. Despite his flaws and disappointments, most knowledgeable NBA observers see him as a unique and special talent who at 25 years' old still has tons of upside. Also getting Maxey is a bonus. So I would do this in a heartbeat.

Still doesn't help the fact that he hasn't improved his shooting a lick since he was drafted. I don't think anyone would argue that Simmons has some special talents, but it comes with a massive downside, that a team has to account for, and build around.

The real question is if its worth it or not.

Five out offense with Ben Simmons, eh? That makes him the ball-handler if he plays, which makes Cade (and Killian!) spot up shooters.

Jesus no.

EDIT: forgot Hayes would be gone, but still a big no.

no. I'd not trade grant for him. I'd consider Hayes, Josh,.... but it's not close enough to cover his salary. I wouldn't play him at pg though. I'd keep a team of ball handlers.

He’s a great player but all this drama and all that money isn’t worth it. He’ll throw a hissy fit about being in Detroit too. Too many risks unfortunately

So Philly doesn't want him because of his weaknesses but they also want significant assets back? lol ok...

The question is, why does Philly make that trade? They turned down better trade packages than that already, if the rumors are to be believed.

I actually think that Simmons would be an interesting fit alongside Cade and Bey but I don't know, I'm just not a fan of his attitude, the contract is too rich and trading Grant leaves the Pistons pretty light in the frontcourt so valuewise it's fine but it just doesn't really "fit" for other reasons.

If Ben has a future in this league, it’s as a Draymond Green style facilitator/defensive hub.

People should stop thinking of him as a guy who will anchor an offense, and definitely stop thinking of him as a guard.

I don’t want him either but this “it leaves us light up front and heavy in the backcourt” talk really misses the point. Heck even last season he started alongside 2 “other” guards.
