CASSIUS STANLEY Signed by Pistons

Post#1 » by GreekAlex » Thu Sep 23, 2021 11:15 pm

He was the pacers 2nd round pick last year and they pull the qualifying offer.

Seems like the Pistons may have used their last roster spot on him. I can’t find too much information about the contact.

Not sure what to think but I was hoping for something more creative or impactful with the last roster spot.

Seems like a signing to help drum up more interest in the G League team.

That would suck for him to go from a qualifying offer to a G-league deal.

I’d be all for that but I’ll have to find more information on the contact details.

I don't really have a whole lot of questions about who's going to be on our 15 man roster- it's pretty clear in my mind. Which means any signings outside of that are either camp fodder or G-League guys, which is inherently less interesting.

The Pacers pulled a qualifying offer, but he was only going to be a two way player there. He’s basically trying out for a two way contract and/or locking up a g league gig with an nba team focused on a youth movement. Not a bad chance to take by either side

Ok cool. I wonder why none of the reports specified that. Thanks for the update.

weaver likes them athletes. stanley was arguably the most athletic player in the combine last year.

6'5 (without shoes)
6'7 wingspan
202 pounds
44" vert (combine best but i think he tanked his reach a bit)
3.09 three quarter court sprint (fourth best)
2.43 shuttle run (fifth best)
his lane agility time was in the lower half of the pack though.

EDIT: aaaand i completely forgot he was in the dunk contest last season.

Great athlete who is really bad(raw) offesnively. Looked like Killian Hayes out there on offense in limited minutes. For sure a project type guy that hopefully is just getting a deal that puts him in our training camp, pre-season, and then down to the G League team. I think he still is a ways away from being an NBA guy, but Diallo was somewhat similar coming into the league. He needs to work on his jumper and improve his overall skillset to pair with that athleticism. Diallo shot like 17% from deep, then 28% from deep, then once being traded to us last year his % was 39% so perhaps Diallo can help the young athlete out a bit because he has clearly been working hard on that jump start coming a long ways in his first 3 years. Would be amazing to see him take another jump forward in year 4 with us since we have that team option.

I can't really agree that Weaver likes them athletes. He drafted Cade, Livers and Garza none of which are plus athletes and signed Olynyk who isn't much of an athlete. I think this was his reputation as a scout in OKC but that didn't seem to follow him here, at least not as a guy who puts a premium on high end athleticism. I think he has a bigger preference for players with high Basketball IQ, at least that's how he approached this draft and offseason it seems.

Honestly , I think Weaver likes the thoughtful type. If you look around the league there are players who are loud all the time, boisterous, obviously 2 cans short of a six pack. Weaver looks for thoughtful, cerebral players.

Would you describe any of the teams players as dumb? Rude? Arrogant?

Strong, silent types that lead thru example, and have excellent work ethics. He obviously wants certain athletic skills as well, but he obviously prioritizes this these mental traits more.

Higher IQ, determined players.

Meh. He's a guy who really needed to stay in college for a couple years and actually develop his game. I think that injury just scared him into chasing the immediate contract.

Cassius Stanley may be another of Weaver's reclamation projects, just a different type. I have no doubt that beginning his career in the Bjorkgren led Pacers organization was not best for his development. Perhaps a fresh start on the Cruise squad with better plans and coaching will help him find that offensive game. He'll likely need at least a full season to show if he can become a rotation player. Time for Beilein to roll up his sleeves.

So, he's a great passer. Strange, he averaged 0 assists. Unfortunately, unlike Hayes, he doesn't defend very well either.

Hayes is far from great at handling the ball or passing the ball. When you're handling the ball as the PG and you aren't looking to score of course you're going to get some assists but the true measure of being a creating PG is assist to TO ratio and Killian was pretty bad with turning the ball over. And when I said on offense, I was referring to being trash at scoring the ball.

Sorry, Stanley stinks, both offensively and defensively. He got dumped from his Pacer 2-way. He's lucky to have gotten an exhibit 10, he'll be even luckier to make The Cruise.
