Suns looking like they might not want to pay him max money, he could be one of the best pick & roll options for Cade and the paint defender we need?

Yes, I'd give him the MAX. He's much better than Drummond who we gave the Max to, and for us the Max would just be 4 years.
He is just turned 23 years old and would be a great piece to the core. Biggest thing is, you want 4 other guys that can shoot the ball when he is on the court. Can't have any non shooters besides Ayton.

I'm more inclined to say yes, he wouldn't take all of our cap space next off season, leaving us to go after a PG option and he would fill a major need for us. Plus he is everything Andre Drummond should have been.

That said, I actually like Bridges from Phoenix a lot more as far as fit into are starting lineup goes. Cade-Bridges-Bey-Grant-Stewart would be a great young starting core.
Also, if we did go after Ayton, it would help a bunch if Stewart shows us more of his outside shooting and ability to play some 4. Ayton would likely be close to a 20/10 guy for us for four years.... provide interior defense and toughness and when we "go big" a a Cade/Bey/Grant/Stewart/Ayton lineup would give us the size to match up with just about any team in the league.

All maxes are not created equal so there's literally no point in bringing up Drummond. Everybody uses the word max but let's discuss actual numbers and let's see what opinions are then.

No no no no no. The Pistons need to be looking at max players AFTER they know what they have with the current roster and where the biggest needs lie.

Ayton is looking for the same extension Trae Young and Doncic got. Depends if he can make an all NBA team next year. 5yrs 172 mil, avg 35 mil a year or a 5 yrs 207 mil, 41 mil a year.
That kind of contract really ties you down especially if the owner isn’t willing to go over the luxury tax. I know Gores has said he’s willing to, but we’d have to wait and see.
Aytons good, but putting that much money at the center position for a good not great player is risky IMO especially in today’s NBA.

But he could only get that deal if he signs with Phoenix. Any other team can only offer him a 4 year deal, with the same starting salary but slightly smaller raises per year. A Max from Detroit or any team besides Phoenix would be about 4 years $130 million using about $29 million of cap space next summer.
#1, He isn't worth trading assets for and then paying that huge contract to.
#2, If you can get him for nothing, besides cap space, he is likely worth adding to the team.
#3, He's a top 60 NBA player for sure, and is young and likely just about to be entering his prime. In theory you should get four of his best years in a four year deal. He's a near 20 and 10 guy for us most likely with solid defense. He's not a top 5 center in the league, but he's certainly an above average center right around top 8 or 9 in the league currently and getting better.

Only way that happens is if he has a bad year. He’ll be extended or traded, or extended and traded.

I'd assume IF he signs a Max offer sheet with any other team the Suns match it and are happy to pay him the lesser salary.
What that does long term remains to be seen but could create bad blood.
Suns have Bridges they need to keep too so they're looking at a big payroll just for their top 4.
For us I don't see much point chasing Ayton. We have Stewart, KO & Garza at that spot already

someone will pay him, that's for sure.
but not sure he makes the most sense for us. it looks like we've gone full-commit to being a 5-out team given that literally everyone except JJ and hayes shoot 34%+ from 3 and ayton doesn't fit that. it would also be weird because they'd have to pay stewart half way through ayton's new deal so you'd potentially be spending ~$50 mil on two guys that can only split 48 minutes (i really don't see them sharing the floor).

But surely you'd dump them (KO & Garza for sure) at the drop of a hat for Ayton, right?

Not sure he’s worth a max deal especially if we’re giving up assets to get him.

Suns are not trading him - at least not now, so this is too hypothetical even to consider. Honestly, right now this is all just part of the negotiations. Pistons will have time any which way you look at Ayton, but I would be shocked if he's anywhere but Phoenix for the next five years.

Let’s save our max contracts for when we are a playoff team. We have a good young core. Let them develop and then see what we need later in the season/next year.

I’d sure like to see what kind of progress Stewart can make in year 2 before signing a max player at the position that he’s best suited.

There wouldn't be a need to dump them assuming we're signing Ayton into cap space.
Ayton 30, Stewart 18
Grant 12, KO 24, Stewart 12
Bey 30, Grant 18

Say what you will about CoJo. He just knows how to run the offense.
