Let's talk GARZILLA!!!

The kid was fun to watch last night against Embiid. I loved the way he hit those couple 3 pointers forcing Embiid to come out. That's about the only way to deal with Embiid on that end is to try and force him out to cover and make him work.
Garza looked like he was getting under Joel's skin a bit. Yeah, Garza is slow if he needs to move some distance with any speed, but I thought he looked just fine when they were able to setup in a half court defense.
He does get right up on his guy and contest shots and plays physical.
I am excited to see more of this kid.
Since he can hit the 3 so we'll, would any of you like to see him eventually starting over Beef Stew?.
Obviously he has a lot of work to do, but let's say he does well all year, learns a good deal, has another summer league and preseason, would you be calling for him to start?
It was nice just for the few minutes he was in to have a big center who can still step out and pop 3 pointers. Yes, KO can do that too but he is just not as beefy as Garziila is.
Anyway, I thought he deserved a thread because obviously he must be impressing Casey enough in pratice to warrant minutes early in the game as we saw last night.

All I can say is "I told you so." I said before the draft that I thought he was worth a flyer and would love to get him in the second round, and loved that the Pistons got him in the second round. And a whole lotta people jumped all over that, saying that he was too slow, couldn't play D, didn't fit with today's NBA, wouldn't be able to do what he did in college in today's NBA and that, literally, "he'll never be an NBA player."
Now, I know that there may be people out there thinking "Damnit, frickin' Manocad just might have been right; he's going to be insufferable now if I admit it." Don't worry; I'm not out to rub it in anyone's face. I'm just happy that he looks like there may be a role for him that makes this team better. And that's with running nearly ZERO plays in the post for him which quite frankly, I'll don't understand, although that may just be due to not having the right situation available yet. If it were me and Garza was in the game against an undersized bench center and the team needed points, I'd be clearing out and feeding him the ball so he could go to work in the post.

The sixer game was the only game ive seen so far, so idk how many games garza has played, but he seemed like a statue defensively. Not sure if his offense will ever be good enough to make up for it.

Not a whole lotta players look like defensive stalwarts against Embiid.

I thought he did fine defensively considering who he was defining. It looked to me that he was doing enough to make Embiid show his irrated body language.
I suspect his scoring will easily compensate for his defensive problems because the kid can score down low and hit 3 pointers as well.
He also appears to have a high basketball iq as well. So I'm very glad we nabbed him in the 2nd round.

Oh man, we play a team tomorrow that has an O at the end of their city name. This is perfect.
The song the fans can sing.
"Oh no,
there goes Orlando
Go go GARZIILA"

How did he look in the other games? Did he play meaningful minutes or was it garbage time? I didnt see the other games. His knock coming out of college is that he was way too slow.

Garbage minutes and not many. He’s clearly getting faster up and down the court though. He was a slug in college.

Garza is a net negative player and likely will be for the foreseeable future imo
He needs to be an overwhelmingly positive player on offence to outweigh his ineptitude on the other end. I don't mind him playing at the moment because it's not like we are going to win many games this season regardless, and in that case may as well throw him on the court and see what we have.
His best role on offence at this level is likely as a pick and pop shooter which he has shown so far he can hit from 3.

It was a pleasure watching Luka piss Embiid off, after years of watching Embiid toy with Drummond. With his intensity on the court and willingness to bang inside he might frustrate many of the bigger centers in the league. I think he'll have a contributing role going forward, particularly for certain matchups.

The team as a whole is -41 in the three games Garza has played while he's -21 in those games. The idea that's he's inept on defense is overplayed; he did a serviceable job on Embiid given that he's a rookie. Offensively I can count on literally one finger the times I recall him actually being fed the ball in the post. He's basically been just setting picks and rolling to the basket to rebound; he's taken 8 shots in three games. In any case, if he can continue shooting 50% from the floor and 40% from 3 he'll be fine.

Yeah, I've got my money on Garza being the next whipping boy for Piston fans. Just feels like a natural direction to go in with built in fallback jabs.

And now Drummond is and I quote "Alfred" to Embiid's "Batman"
https://sixerswire.usatoday.com/2021/10/26/andre-drummond-says-he-is-the-alfred-to-sixers-star-joel-embiids-batman/It's nice having an actual 7 footer that can harass other 7 footers or can come in and shake up a 2nd quarter line up just due to team's confusion on how to guard him for a brief moment. It was the same deal with Tacko Fall for Boston and for the recent fans, when we had Boban who was also a +/- fan favorite
I think he's going to fill that role fairly well. I can't see him being the full time backup center but a guy that will get rotation minutes at times

Did I miss something? Are we really running plays for anyone in our so-called offense? Do you have evidence, or are you just assuming that because it's a thing other teams do?
Garza's been hustling and producing some. He needs some quality minutes, with a floor general who doesn't suck, to see if he can do more of that. Similar things could be said for a few of our guys.

Garza looks like a 3rd string center to me. Maybe 2nd string if he can consistently knock down jumpers. He's obviously put in a ton of work slimming down an trying to gain some quickness. Any time your second rounders have a shot at being rotation guys, that's solid.
As for embiid - garza annoyed him. Not in a great way though. More like "How dare you put this guy on me! Now I'm going to destroy you." And then that is what happened. We were up 3 when he came in the game, woke embiid up with that shove, and then embiid destroyed us. I like that he competes hard, but it's not like he got in embiids head or something. He poked the sleeping giant and then the giant made us pay for it.

Am I the only person who watched Garza play in the post? The idea that he can only be of value if he hits 3's is ignoring his greatest offensive capability.

He hasn't shown any ability to do that against NBA centers. And even if he did, you aren't feeding your backup center a ton of post touches in today's nba. He's going to nee to space the floor if he wants to be a rotation player. And you'll notice, I didn't say 3's. I said jumpers. He's not blowing past anyone, so he's going to need to at least be able to pick and pop.

Doubtful because he has exceeded expectations and was just a 2nd round pick. A lot of dislike usually comes from being a high draft pick that doesn't pan out... or from being a FA addition that is overpaid compared to production. That's why people disliked guys like Jon Leuer, Josh Smith, Charlie V, Ben Gordon, Sekou, Stanley Johnson, etc.
It's pretty rare to hate too much on a low salary guy or a 2nd rounder unless their performance is bad and they are still getting a bunch of playing time.
I guess the other big thing people hate at times more recently is when vets get PT over the young guys. Certainly has been a decent amount of CoJo dislike lately with Lee being out of the rotation.

If Joseph was playing well there would be more whining than hate. Not much to like so far this season but time will tell.
