Killian Hayes is now leading Detroit in 3 point shooting...

Post#1 » by treefi » Sun Nov 7, 2021 4:03 am

Excluding Pickett's single made 3, Hayes is now leading the Pistons in 3 point shooting at 38.1%! :D

How long will it last?

he's also perfect from the free throw line, he's clearly the best shooter on the team.

I don’t think it’s a fluke. When his FG% sneaks above 40% in a month or so, I wonder if he’ll still be the scapegoat?

He should be a decent % shooter as long as he takes good shots. The thing that has killed his percentage is those step back 3's. He can't hit that to save his life. If he gets the ball in rhythm and just takes the shot, he looks pretty solid. Hopefully, 38% isn't good enough to lead the team for long though. Grant, bey, KO and jackson should be good shooters for us.

Shoot, I’d take 38%. That’s still 114 points scored over 100 shots vs 96 points shooting 2’s at 48%. The 76ers lead the league at 39% while the average looks to be about 34-35%. Just need the rest of the team to start hitting them at a decent clip if they’re going to shoot so many.

For him its about 3 things when it comes to his 3 point shooting.

1. Shot Selection. Just take the good ones. Don't take them early in the shot clock unless you're wide open.

2. Catch and shoot. Don't worry about the step back or side step 3s right now, just get down the catch and shoot and you can work on adding the other stuff later.

3. Corner 3s. They are the shortest distance where he needs to be able to knock it down from when Cade has the ball at the top of the key. Being able to catch and shoot those corner 3s from Cade at a good % will be key to him being a successful pair.

Previously, it seemed like Killian was always quick to take another shot (usually a worse look) after a make and the last few games he hasn't forced those next shots and really has become better at just letting the shots come to him in the flow for the game. You can see the growth even from a few weeks ago.

If Pistons had a veteran point, Killian could play off guard to take pressure off as he learns the game at NBA level before potentially transitioning back to point as game slows down for him and he gets more experience. However with Cade there there is less a floor general who automatically takes over.

A second unit with Joseph, with Cade starting with Josh Jackson is the best Detroit could do. I still would have loved to get Dragic in Detroit for the season. Makes too much money to trade for him though, and he'll likely be bought out after a TDL deal and end up signing with Miami again.

Even if its just for a short moment in time, the irony is sweet, and thick like molasses.

Well, well, well. How the turntables...

He certainly seems more comfortable playing off ball and not having to take end of shot clock iso three pointers/long jumpers. And Casey hasn't been staggering him with Cade to cover the one.

38% is nice in a low number of attempts, hopefully he's able to maintain that while improving the rest of his scoring- we'll see. It's important to note that as of right now it only reflects a grand total of 8 made 3-pointers- he doesn't even have enough to qualify on leaderboards technically.

The percentage would place him at about 65th in the league if he did qualify- the average team has 2 guys who shoot a higher percentage than him on generally higher volume- really goes to show how much of a shooters' league it has become.

I'll give it a couple games. No way Grant, Bey, and Olynyk keep shooting this badly.

THe team hitting 38% would be fine. The best shooter being at 38% would suck.

The league average (which will likely still fluctuate, it's early) is 34%, compared to 36.7% last season.

Our average thus far is 27.7%. That's inexcusably bad...

If the team as a whole shot better than 35% they’d be better than the league average. Sure, it’s nice to know you have a guy shooting 40+% when you HAVE to have a 3 but how often does that occur?

obviously a small sample size but here is hayes' shooting chart: https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hayeski01/shooting/2022

he's 8/21 overall, and broken down:
- he's 3/6 (50%) from the corners

- 5/15 (33%) overall from above the break
- 3/3 (100%) from the left side above the break
- 1/3 (33%) from the point and
- 1/9 (11%) from the right side above the break

pretty sure the right side above the break is where he's attempted most of his step backs. he should take that out of his repertoire altogether and just focus on spot up shooting and attacking closeouts imo.

?? Pretty much all the time. There were like 60 guys who shot 40% from 3 last year. 38% would have tied you for 94th. That's certainly respectable and would be a huge improvement for Killian, but you don't want your best 3 point shooter to be the 94th best shooter in the league.

So games are won or lost "all the time" if a team doesn't hit a 3 at the end? The average margin of victory in the NBA last season was 12.3 points (couldn't find good data for this season; just average scoring differential by team) so historically most games aren't that close. IF the rest of the team is below average from 3, sure, you'd want someone who could hit at 40+%. Would you really complain if your best shooter was at 38% and the rest of the team collectively was at 37%?

Sure some games aren't close - generally because 1 team is hitting a significantly higher percentage of their shots throughout the game. I'd like us to be that kind of team.

And no sense proposing hypotheticals that don't exist in reality. No team has everyone shooting within 1% of each other. Players have roles. Your shooters should...and this might sound crazy.... shoot better than guys hanging their hats on rebounding or defense.

Again, 94 players shot above 38% last year. If you don't have any of those guys on your team, the chances of you being a decent 3 point shooting team about about 0%. On any given night, the opposition would have 3 guys hitting a higher percentage than your best guy. You might get lucky a couple nights, but over 82 games, that is a recipe for a bunch of losses.

They switched ball vendors, supposedly that is hurting the shooting percentages thus far.

No doubt. Remember when they tried playing with FIBA for a season. It was atrocious.
