Re: Top five pick and cap space
In theory, we should for sure be adding two starters to the mix. One with our max cap space, even if they aren't a max player. The other with our top 5 draft pick. I would say only Cade and Grant are safe as starters, assuming that Grant is still here. Right now it feels like its more likely than not that Grant will get moved, but its also hard to say what exactly we will get back in a deal for Grant.
Thursday February 10th is the trade deadline so we've got 7 weeks where its going to be all about possible trades, and once we get past that point I'll start looking further into draft prospects and potential 2022 FA signings.

No one was trying to get rid of you; we simply accepted the statement that you were getting rid of yourself.

Just need to keep losing and secure a top 3 pick! Any win at this point is essentially a loss!

The bottom 3 teams all have the exact same odds for the top 4 picks. Even if we're worst in the league its essentially a coin flip of landing top 4 or getting the 5th pick.
I'll want to lose games if we ever at some point get to 4th worst in the league... As longs as we're in the bottom 3 I'll be wanting to team to win every game we play.

Yep. I'd rather the Pistons have the third worst record, i.e. at least have some wins to look back fondly on, than have the worst record. Especially going the way it's been going.

Finishing with the third worst record opens up the possibility of falling to 6th or 7th. With the worst record you can only drop to number five. I am not necessarily rooting for losses. But they don't bother me at all if it secures a top 5 pick.

I don’t know enough about the differences between the 5th and 7th picks in this player pool to know if moving down a couple spots is something to be concerned with. In many drafts that distinction ends up trivial. There certainly was a clear top 4 or 5 (at least in terms of perception) last year. Is that true this year?
Obviously odds get worse if you fall to fourth, but only marginally.
To homelander, there is no way to “secure” a top 3 pick by losing enough. There really never was, but in the old system the worst team got a 75 percent chance. As it is, we could go 5-77 and still only have about a 40 percent chance of a top 3 pick. Uncertainty has been ramped up under the new lottery system, just strap in and get used to it.
My instinct is to say I’d rather see us get some wins and the player development (or at least morale) that comes with it, even if it means losing a spot or 2. I’d mind very little about falling to the third spot, and would only marginally care if we fall to 4th. Hard to see us going further than that.

Re: Top five pick and cap space
Even if you finish 4th or 5th you have a good chance of drafting top 4. Its much more balanced than it used to be. Moving in the right direction as a team is more important than having the absolute best odds possible. Last year the Cavs were the 5th worst team and got the 3rd overall pick and Mobley and the Raptors were the 7th worst team and got the 4th overall pick and Barnes.

Re: Top five pick and cap space
Here’s what I would do. I would sign Schroder to a 3-4 year contract. Basically replacing Joseph’s role. Pay the man because we can and I don’t think we can get better than his caliber. Then you draft one of Paolo/Jabari/Chet. Then you pay a guy like Knicks Robinson or bring back Drummond. Keep grant and olynyk. At that point we still have cap space to keep for anything else we need.
Defense wins championships

Schroder is a ball hog and a cancer.
Even while playing next to LeBron/AD for the Lakers in sunny LA - he still refused to play team basketball, looking to pad his stats in hopes of a big contract.
When he was offered said big deal (84M), he turned it down.
Dont want any part of that garbage on the roster, at least Joseph knows his place and can mentor Cade.
Schroder is an idiot and would a bad influence for our team.

Re: Top five pick and cap space
Schroder being a "cancer" might be a little strong, but he's certainly not anyone the Pistons want. With the way the league is going, Pistons need team players.I mean just look at the top two rookies (so far) in Barnes and Mobley - both have a complete game that becomes even better when they're a part of a cohesive team. I actually feel the same way about Cade - save he plays for the Pistons.
Schroder is not made anyone on his team better, nor do his skills just improve the overall success of his teams.

True, but the bottom three also have a 47.9% chance of falling out of the top four. And if that happens, there is a difference between finishing first, second or third.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Re: Top five pick and cap space
I thought I would actually want to Max Ayton and draft Jabari but then realised we don't have Chris Paul out there directing traffic so:
Draft Jabari, take some high dollar 1 year flyers on dudes so we hit the salary floor and roll again with the kids.
I know many are disappointed but we're not 1 or 2 players away from being a legit playoff team or championship contender.
It was always going to take a few years to build a talent base, then add to that via the Draft and free agency.
