Grant and Olynk expected back soon, what's your rotation look like? Bol Bol?

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Wed Jan 12, 2022 4:48 am

It was mentioned that Grant and Olynyk are getting closer to coming back and expected to be back before the end of this month. We've also got the addition of Bol Bol, who if we gave up a draft pick for we're probably going to want to play some minutes. What's your rotation look like in 10 days if everyone is back and healthy? Who are you 10 guys to play each night 5 starters and 5 bench players?

If it stays the same, no trades?

Hayes
Cade
Bey
Grant
Olynyk

So your bench would be...

CoJo
Diallo
Josh
Lyles
Stewart

??? Or would you put Frank Jackson and/or Bol Bol in the backup unit? Garza?

If what I've read is accurate;

Cojo
Diallo
Josh
Stewart
Garza

Bol gets time when the game is a blowout I guess. The player I have soured on the most is Stewart, mostly because he doesn't know how to set a proper screen. It drives me nuts.

I think Bol Bol is out of the rotation unless Grant and/or Kelly are traded.

1st
Bey
Grant
Olynk
Diallo
Cade

2nd
JJax/Livers
Lyles/Bol Bol
Garza
FJax
DWalton/SLee

I'd move on from the 6-8 guy against 7 footers and the PG that can't playmake or whatever were calling Killian and Stewart.

Speaking as an outsider, what is the point of playing Olynyk and especially Lyles? I wouldn't be surprised to see Bol get some starts to see what he can do with minutes. I would think/hope they give him a chance. They could really have something.

Or he could suck.

Mostly so we dont lose by 50 every game. Not good for Cade, Bey, Diallo, players that will be on the team in 3 years.

Also Olynyk and Lyles are good enough, with team friendly contracts and could be moved for something to contenders.

I agree. He's a free agent at the end of the year. There would be no point to giving up a pick and then having him sit. I'd try to get a second for Lyles, but I doubt we could.

Olynyk (30) / Stewart (18)
Grant (30) / Bol Bol (18)
Bey (32) / Grant (2) / Cade (14)
Cade (18) / Diallo (24) / Jackson (6)
Hayes (26) / Lee (18) / Jackson (4)

Lyles and Cojo have been okay, but clearly have little or no trade value and aren't part of the plan. Jackson and Garza aren't NBA players.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Super likely we trade Grant and he won't be part of our rotation. That said, for the sake of the exercise, here's what I'd go with:

Cade
Frank Jackson
Grant
Bol
Kelly O
---
Sixth man: Bey
Haimi
Hayes
Stewart
Lyles
---
Josh
Cojo

G League: Lee, Garza
---

Hate to stick Bey on the bench, but I love his chemistry with Haimi when they're both given a bit more usage, and I think power forward is his natural fit, so it makes sense to stagger him and Grant. I like staggering Hayes and Cade too and surrounding Cade with shooting in the first unit.

Nevermind, this team is impossible to figure out in its current state. Ill wait until after the trade deadline. I can't imagine the team standing pat.

I'm sure weaver will push Casey to give Bol minutes.

Bol might actually pair really well with Stewart. I think they probably have complimentary skill sets from the sound of it.

Big problem we have right now, IMO, is that Grant, Bey, and Bol are all best suited as stretch fours. Long term we need to settle on two of them and find a better starter at SF (whether that's an improved Haimi or someone else) or play three guards.

I’m honestly convinced they should feature him on the drive until they finish trade season or he earns a call up. Whatever comes first.

Small sample size, but he did really good down there a couple seasons ago.

Assuming Grant is traded, this is what I'd like to see for a while. It gives Olynyk and Cunningham some time together and gives Bol some PF minutes to see what he can offer. If Bol isn't working, I'd try Stewart at PF with Garza at C on the second unit.

Starers:
Olynyk
Bey
Diallo
Frank Jackson
Cunningham

Bench:
Stewart
Bol
Josh Jackson
Lyles
Hayes

I don't see the purpose of trading a minor asset for him to just ride the bench. I'm sure weaver wants to see if he's a player or just a scrub.

I get the logic of why he would play. I'm asking about how you're sure Weaver is going to push Casey to play him.

Bey is not a PF. He's both too small to guard Giannis, AD, Collins, Zion, Sabonis, Randle --- and too slow to really hurt those guys on Offense.

He's a slower SF and he needs to become a better passer/dribbler or find a way to always shoot 40+% on 3s.

Maybe if the team had Hakeem or Duncan playing C, then we could go with someone like Bey at PF. But Bey and Stewart are so bad as "big men", especially together.
