CoJo Salary Cap Question
In the off-season, how likely is it for the team to ask CoJo to decline his $5M option so they have more to spend, with the promise of giving him the same $5M with an exception once the spending is done?

Re: CoJo Salary Cap Question
i haven't brushed up on the CBA rules in a while but if they decline his option then he carries a cap hold of almost $10 million, which limits their spending even more than his ~$5 million option.
i actually have no idea if any "hand shake" or "verbal promise" deals are done in the NBA, but if we decline his option AND renounce his rights, it gets rid of the cap hold but we also lose his bird rights so we won't be able to sign him if it puts us over the cap.
my money is on him just picking up his option. there's always the faint hope of him wanting to play for a contender but he'd definitely have to sign a vet min deal which is like $3 million less than his option.
but hey, if he picks up his player option, waiving and stretching his contract is always an option.

I never thought about it. I believe it's legal. We can renounce his rights so he would have no cap hold, and then we could sign him with the room exception.

I’m hoping against hope that he doesn’t pick up his opinion.
If they draft a big, I’d like to make a huge offer to Anfernee Simons even though he expressed interest in staying in Portland.

Re: CoJo Salary Cap Question
Its gonna take a huge offer to nab one of these young SG away from a team, and even then it's not guaranteed. I would rather grab an up and comer, that hasn't truly broken out yet.GreekAlex wrote:whitehops wrote:i haven't brushed up on the CBA rules in a while but if they decline his option then he carries a cap hold of almost $10 million, which limits their spending even more than his ~$5 million option.

Who that is, is a crap shoot, but it will cost a hell of a lot less.

Since he became a starter with a consistent role in January, he’s be putting up 24ppg, about 5 assists and shooting 40% on a high volume of threes.
I don’t see any downside to throwing all the cap space at him.
I’d rather have one potential ace/ king than 2-3 cast-off misfits.

Re: CoJo Salary Cap Question
I'm not saying I wouldn't, but doesn't that tie-up the cap money for a period of time, possibly ruining the chance of signing anyone else, as in while your money is tied up, all available guys are snapped up, and then your left hanging?GreekAlex wrote:zeebneeb wrote:Its gonna take a huge offer to nab one of these young SG away from a team, and even then it's not guaranteed. Honest question, I don't know.

Re: CoJo Salary Cap Question
Simons is not happening. Portland traded away CJ and made cap-cutting moves for the sole purpose of extending Simons (RFA) and Nurkic. They will match a MAX offer.

Re: CoJo Salary Cap Question
IF I were going to make a run at a SG it would probably be LaVine. He's an UFA and I don't think it's a given that CHI will offer him the 5 year max. They are actually in a little bit of a tough spot financially. They *could* do it, but it will severely impact the rest of their roster because they already have a buncha money tied up. I think he's a more realistic target than Simons at this point.
Sell him on playing with Cade/Bey/Grant and draft a big. IF we finish the year strong and Cade continues to shine it'll actually be a fairly attractive situation. You might even be able to work out some type of S&T because they won't want to lose him for nothing IF they decide they don't wanna go super max.

Re: CoJo Salary Cap Question
I think it’s more likely for the Pistons to decline Frank’s team option (if we want/need more cap space) than Joseph to decline his player option.
But who knows, weirder things have happened.

Re: CoJo Salary Cap Question
I personally don't want to tie up significant cap room just yet.
We will have to spend it before Bey, Stewart and Hayes enter RFA though as their cap holds will be enormous.
So with that in mind I'd spend very little this off-season (retaining Bagley), hope for another year of strong growth from Cade, Bey, Stewart & Hayes, a quality rookie year from our 2022 Lotto pick and then sell free agents on that come the 2023 off-season.
Bags
Rookie 2022
Bey
Diallo
Cade
Hayes
Stewart
Throw in a 2023 pick, potentially 2 free agents...
Might actually be on the right path with that.

Getting LaVine would be legitimate reason the freak the f**k right on out.

Yup. I’d be perfectly fine with throwing MAX at Lavine.

That said, unless Lavine wants out, it’s extremely doubtful he leaves Chicago.
They are young, winning, and the Bulls are nowhere near the Luxury Tax (yet).

I like LaVine not as much as someone like Simons who I feel fit a bit better as a secondary scorer playmaker but I wouldn't be upset if Weaver pushed hard for Zach at all. I'd certainly feel better about that than someone like Brunson who I think is a lesser tier than both in terms of potential and play
But not doing anything and running it back with a top 5 draft pick next season wouldn't be bad either. Get more reps together, figure out the Jerami situation, and then spend big the off-season after next season accordingly
