i'd much, much rather bring him back then frank jackson. mcgruder very much knows his limitations and just contributes where he can, plays a good team game. jackson almost tries to play beyond his ability.

Yeah, Hayes is a good defender and passer, but lately he's shown flashes of mediocrity in the other aspects of his game. That's improvement. If he can further boost the rest of his game to adequate then he'll be a decent piece.
At the end of the day, it's not about wins and losses. Teamwork, fair play, and good sportsmanship make champions of us all.

I agree that's an area of opportunity, but I suspect he makes a bigger jump at the FT line. For as easily as he gets into the paint he's only averaging 2.5 FTA.

Just look at tonight's game; 0 FTA!! From a guy who was getting into the lane all night long. That's absurd. Part of that will be on him to do a better job of drawing the contact, but he'll also just start to get more respect from the refs. He should be averaging 6-7 FTA per game next season. The way he plays the game he should be near the top of the league in attempts his entire career. He's always downhill.

If we're talking 11th/12th men then I'd rather just roll with a 2nd rounder or g-league scrub. We already know Jackson/McGruder are trash. I get the "end of the bench" thing, but if we're counting on either of those guys that's not a good sign. I'd rather keep digging for nuggets and see if we can find another Livers/Dinwiddie or whatever. No sense going back to that same well when we know it's dry.

I think we should bring back McGruder only if we move on from other "vet" players like Grant and get younger overall.... I think we should have at least two "vets" on the team that are 26 or older. If there are already two other guys that fit that roll then lets move on from McGruder by all means.

Right now CoJo, Grant, Kelly, and McGruder are the four "vets" and if the three of them are still here we 100% don't need to keep McGruder around. But if CoJo opts out, and we trade away Grant, etc.... then I'd be down to have a vet like McGruder around.

I can certainly understand wanting a pair of locker-room vets, but I'm not sure an end of the bench guy who doesn't play is really helping us. Just because they are "older" doesn't mean they are bringing leadership. McGruder doesn't have the same pedigree as somebody like Haslem or Lindsey Hunter. Aint nobody looking to McGruder for his years of experience & wisdom. At 30 yrs old he's been in the league a whopping 6 years and accomplished nothing.

If that's what we're doing I'd rather spend a few mil more for a true vet on a short contract. Go get you a Lou Williams, DJ Augustin, Wayne Ellington or whatever. Somebody who's been around for a minute and played on some good teams. Get some actual experience and leadership. Somebody the players may actually respect.

i have literally no idea how someone with a shot chart like this:
Image

can have 0 free throw attempts. literally 15 shots from within like five feet of the rim and nothing.

oh well. at least we know he can get to the rim.

Once Cade starts knocking down that 3 ball he's gonna be a tough cover.

Cades base as a star is already set. Now he just has to spend the next couple years shining up on some thing's which shouldn't be a problem.

Imagine him if he even adds 4-5 ppg from the FT line, a more efficient 3 and less TOs. Hes going to be a monster and will still fill out as well. Might even grow back to 6'8 again.

Growing a foot is gonna take a couple years though.

Bingo. I'm not saying McGruder is a bad value in any way. The problem is that he doesn't do anything particularly well either other than hustle, and more often than not he's being used in more of a forward position at 6'4". Go get a 23 year old 6'8" guy who hustles and maybe can't shoot a 3 but can defend bigger guys, block a shot and grab a board here and there. Maybe that guy surprises you.

I don’t think refs know how to call Cade. Maybe they’ll get some instruction in the off-season. He really does play differently than anyone else in the league. Shifty, subtle, effective.

They need instruction to know a slap in the face is a foul?
