Revisiting the Bey - Kennard Trade

Kennard, I think, has proven himself worth the deal he got from the Clippers. Brown is a player with the Nets. Plus four second round picks. Bey, of course, was a great find.
Acquired • Rodney McGruder
• Dzanan Musa
• rights to Saddiq Bey
• rights to Jaylen Hands
• 2021 second round pick (from Nets) (#37-J.T. Thor)
• cash (from Clippers)
Traded• Bruce Brown
• Luke Kennard
• Justin Patton
• 2023 second round pick POR
• 2024 second round pick DET
• 2025 second round pick DET
• 2026 second round pick DET

$14 mil a year is still a LOT for what Kennard is giving you. Great shooter (which we could certainly use), but he's still averaging fewer than 12 ppg and doesn't give you much else. Whether he pans our not, I'd still rather have Bey on a rookie contract ($3 mil) and it's not particularly close.
People lose their minds over the idea of giving $14 mil to Bagley. But you wanna give it to Luke Kennard?

Brown was a separate trade, right?

Not super important but I thought we got the pick that became Thor in the rose trade.

Kennard would be a nice fit next to Cade. $14 million is fine if he is healthy and can play 90%+ games of the year.
Put Kennard shooting next to Cade instead of Cojo and he is going to look pretty good. But is Kennard less streaky than Bey or equally streaky?
What the Pistons need is a Seth Curry type player next to Cade that can hit shots 3/4 of the games, instead of 2/5 of the games or so it seems from Bey. Not every game has to be 51 points or even 20, but 15 points a game and steady at decent averages.
Maybe that kind of player is too rare?

Not sure, it might have been lumped together because it happened on the same day?

Yeah Brown was first, seemingly dropping him for nothing, just Musa and another 2nd round pick I think.
Of course as Pistons fans we all had hopes Musa wouldnt suck but he did. G-league guy

Brown was Weaver first move, it was super early, the Bey trade was later, during the draft.
4 2nds and Kennard for the #19 was an absurd of an overpay, but Bey is easily worth that. We got luck that Bey fell to #19.

We waived Musa a couple of days later
I was furious with that trade, and I was right, I would love to have Brown and Bullock in our team.

Kennard imo is a much better shooter I actually think him and bey are a push pretty equal as player kennard much more efficient so far tho.
Imo kennard would be great on this team as a bench shooter or maybe as a starter 14mil ain't that bad for him imo.

Yep, Brown was a completely separate trade. Shamet was the compensation the Nets got in this trade.

Isn't Livers just a better bench option than Kennard @ $14 mil? He's not quite as good a shooter, but he's still around 40% and gives you MUCH better defense/toughness/rebounding.

Do you think we make that deal if Bey isn't available?
I doubt they were targeting the #19 just to have #19

You're right. I expect Livers to be MUCH MUCH better with a larger sample size. Thanks for calling that out.

Sure but kennard is a MUCH better shooter he's actually leading the league in % right now that's pretty impressive

I remember being in shock on draft day, I had wanted us to unload everything to get as many first round picks as we could, I was hoping for a fab five scenario, but I wasn’t expecting us to loose kennard, but I really wanted Bey, and thought he should have been gone in the late lottery so I was watching his status closely, Weaver has made some mistakes, but I’m down for what he’s been doing 100%, it was really boring and sad being a pistons basically most of the last ten years before Weaver took over.

No doubt. GREAT shooter.
PPG 11.6
PER 12.9
VORP 1.1
DRTG 113.9
RPM -3.13
$13,745,455
$14,763,636
$14,763,636
100% acknowledge Kennard is fantastic at what he does. Great role player. He's got a specific skillset and he's as good as anyone at that skill.
For the sake of comparison Luke shot 41.5% his rookie year, which is also quite impressive. Certainly better than Livers 39.1%, but that's not too shabby either. And Livers costs $1,563,518 & $1,836,096 the next 2 seasons. In all fairness I do acknowledge it's a very small sample size for Livers, but he's been fairly consistent in how he's played each game. This isn't a guy who's been up & down or streaky. He plays like a seasoned vet every time he steps on the court. Even when he's not scoring he makes smart bball plays and contributes solid defense.
I stand by my statement; I'd MUCH rather have Livers @ $1.6 mil than pay Kennard $14 mil per season. I'm taking the more well rounded player at 1/9 the cost over the specialist who is a liability as a starter. And I'd say the same thing about other players as well; give me 39+% shooting and solid defense over a guy shooting 45% with no defense. Doesn't do any good if you just give it back at the other end. On a friendlier contract? Maybe I take the bench specialist. But @ $14 mil? No way. He's not worth that much money.

So drafting Luke Kennard over Donovan Mitchell was the right choice after all?

Nah people just gotta find negatives all the time.
Bringing up Kennard cause he's finally doing something shows the mentality.
Nitpicking 4 2nds endlessly shows the mentality.
It's the same old song from some on here
