In season tournament idea

Post#1 » by Southern Piston » Thu May 26, 2022 5:27 am

NBA
International Basketball Players Tournament
40 Teams
( NBA+top 10 international leagues all star teams)
One and Done, 20 minute quarters or
first team to 100 win by two.
4pt shot,
flagrant fouls or fighting automatic kicked out
Winner gets 1m per player on team(5 game tournament I think would be equivalent to 16m a year)
2nd 500,000
Have it take about two weeks ending the Sunday after thanksgiving, about ten games into our season.
“Damian Lillard”wants to win it, and he wants to win it for his buddy Greg Monroe who decided to sign a two way contract with the team, because he thought he could make an extra million here in America winning this tournament instead of going over seas. Monroe taking a two way would overall improve the talent in the league, but also increase the odds for Stars to put more effort into the early season attractions seen worldwide. Also it would expand exposure around the world for the league, other leagues and there players, and a chance for “Dame” to expand his brand worldwide.
I would imagine it would have kinda a national pride feel, but all-stars in international leagues are likely to be Americans, just like NBA rosters have a large amount of international players. There would incentive to win this for Dame, probably Lebron, definitely Monroe.

When the tournament gets down to ten teams, the two teams with the lowest point win differential average thus far would be eliminated. Taking it down to eight teams. The tournament would have the all star teams from the top ten leagues outside the NBA, most I believe are a month or so ahead of us. Seams like pretty good timing for everyone, all leagues 10-25% into the season. I think the NBA needs to expand rosters to 18 players anyways, with tax free vets minimum players after 7yrs, for overall growth in the league, it could also only improve our league, and growth of the young men playing in it. This tournament would incentivize all these angles. Again I’m home with Covid bord with some sherbet strain, I’m ready for your criticism I got nothing else go do. Tell me if you think it would be a good addition to what the season already is.

Jumbled post mate and probably why no one responded.

Perhaps clean it up a bit and it'll generate some conversation

NBA wants to protect its brand and the notion that the NBA is the best league in the world. Zero chance they have a tournament where they put up a cash prize and have international players come in with a chance to take that money away from them. Just makes no sense at all for the league from a marketing standpoint or a financial standpoint.

Think there's interest for a World vs USA game though

No offence intended but stereotype being what it is:

The USA views itself as the be all and end all of things.

You got the rest of the world hoping to beat that idea.

WWE style that would sell tickets and you're guaranteed views from all over the world hoping, praying that a team of international players can bear "the best of the best of the best"

It would sell. But unlikely to get people to agree to it cause USA likely lose.

Luka + Joker + Giannis vs who you got?

Unless you wanna claim Giannis

That's what the Olympics and FIBA. I doubt the NBA has any desire to play actual NBA games against international compeition. If anything, you're going to have NBA teams play against some international teams in pre-season games or simply have two NBA teams play games overseas to help promote the league world wide.

I think the owners would be down, it increases competition, pushes internal development as players around the world not in the NBA could showcase themselves. There’s no way a Lebron lead Lakers wants to loose to a Mirotic lead Euroleague all star team.

Lebron led Lakers suck whether they "want" to or not.

I don’t think it’s a bad start, the timing is good bring the players around the world together to play basketball in the stretch run for the holidays, basketball fanatics around the world would be into it, general fans more likely to catch on over a couple years.
