My 2022 Summer Plans by Troy Weaver (and theBigLip)

The Grant trade opens things up before the draft. If I'm Tony Weaver, here are my next steps:

1. Move up to #4 and get Ivey (assuming he is available). I've changed my mind and Ivey could be a star. Let's go get him. Milwaukee first? Sure. Kelly Olynyk? Of course. Saddiq Bey? Yikes, it would be tough, but yes. And of course our #5. That should be enough to get Ivey.

2. First move with cap space is to give a max offer to... Miles Bridges. We should not do a trade to take on Hayward and #13 just to let Charlotte easily sign Bridges. Let's put the screws to them and see if we can get Bridges. Of course it ties half of our money up, but he's a prize.

3. Sign and trade w Phoenix and get Ayton. The Suns know they will have to cough up a Max contract that they could have done already. We don't have to give them a lot - not much is given up in S&Ts. Olynyk (if not part of Sac trade) and some 2nds? Stewart if we have to.

Cunningham/Hayes
Ivey/Cujo
Bridges/Livers
Bagley
Ayton

I know, a lot of "ifs", but I'd love to see Weaver pull something like this off. Got your own Troy Weaver dream scenario? Let's hear it.

1. Hate it
2. OK with it
3. OK with it but not sure if we can do #1 and #2 unless we get even more cap space (which I guess you'd be doing with #1).

I dare you to watch an Ivey highlights tape and keep your opinion on 1  I’ve been totally in the camp of just accepting Murray or Mathurian at 5, both who would be starters. But I’m now convinced Ivey has Morant potential and we should go after him. It will be an interesting night tonight to see what Weaver does.

Watch some Mathurin highlights and you'll be fine.

Trading up to #4 with anything more than #36 would be a huge mistake. There just isn't enough that separates #4 from #5 and #6 IMO. Just take who's the best still there its like 50/50 that he ends up better anyways. Ivey is far from a sure fire all-star in this league.

I don't think either of bridges or ayton are worth max contracts. I sure wouldn't want both of them.

With all due respect, I stopped reading at Bey+5 for 4.

If Ivey is gone, I’m more than happy with Mathurin for SG. I can see Weaver seeing Stewart as a PF not a center and he could be starting there with a lot more shots next to Ayton. Murray is a great prospect and I’d be quite happy with him too but we’re not taking a discount if we draft Mathurin. Of course Ivey is the prize!

No need to trade a young guy like Bey when we already hold a valuable top 5 pick ourselves.

Also, I was browsing a Kings message board (not RealGM) and one of the Kings media guys predicted that Murray would be the pick at 4 if they don't trade out so take that for what it's worth.

Edit: I just checked again and It's Sam Amick who also works for The Athletic.

I've said it before. I wouldn't be entirely shocked if Murray is taken at 4 that they pass on Ivey for Mathurin. Mathurin does seem like a better fit but I'd try to squeeze a team like the Knicks to get multiple 1sts from them and just take somebody like Duren at 11 who Weaver is apparently big on. Duren+multiple 1sts+a young player or two (Quickley perhaps) is much better than just Mathurin and I'm not even a big Duren guy and am a Mathurin guy.

Ivey is far from a perfect prospect. Doesn't play-make for teammates much. Subpar defender. Has no midrange game. Jumper had a good run of a month or two but outside of that it has been bad. There is absolutely a reasonable chance the he ends up worse than both Saddiq and whomever is taken at #5 in that deal.

Highlights are nice but they don't win games. I would still be torn at 5 if for some reason Ivey, Murray, and Mathurin are available. These guys are all a toss-up to me.

I'm down to trade whomever, to land a second star next to Cade. I have zero attachment to anyone but Cade, as he is what makes it possible to turn this team into a contender. You give him a second star, and then work on surrounding them with the right pieces.

Of course, if you swing and miss on the player you believe will be that second star, you've set yourself up for a nice spot in the unemployment line.

I tend to agree. I wouldn’t pay Saddiq to move up for ANYONE aside from Jabari.

If explosive athleticism and streaky 3 point shooting was all that’s needed Diallo would be a star lol

Ivey seems to have more going for him but he’s still a considerable risk with such a short track record of 3p shooting at an above average clip.

That's insane. 5 and bucks pick ok. And to get the cap space to get Ayton and Bridges we have to lose bagley or lose him and then sign him for minimum. I don't see that happening. So nope. Too many flaws in your plan.
...

I suppose sending Stew and KO in a sat for ayton saves cap. then jackson and hami in a sat for bridges saves cap. but that just means we have enough to resign bagley. I hear they still looking to trade up into the first for another pick. EJ Liddel? Gabriele Procida?

Is there any truth to speculation that Ivey has signaled to Sacramento that he doesn't want to go there?

The way I see it there is a realistic chance that Ivey is available at 5 already. The consolation prize is Keegan Murray who would be a good fit now that Grant is gone.

So it doesn't make a lot of sense for us to give anything to move up to 4; let alone someone like Bey.

If Bey is around then there's less need to go after Bridges although I wouldn't be completely opposed to it. I think if we end up with Murray then it makes slightly less sense to get MB unless he can defend the 2 spot well.

I still don't like the cost of Ayton even if we sign him straight up for the max he desires. I wouldn’t be opposed to dumping Olynyk in a transaction for him if we can magically get him for cheaper. I'd only be open to attaching bad 2nds to it since Phoenix really has no leverage.
