Let's say NBA decide to add Seattle and I don't know, Las Vegas to the league, so there is an expansion draft, which mean every team need to protect 8 players and everyone else is up for grabs.

Who are the 8 guys you protect for us, I am having a hard time deciding, because there are at least 9 guys I would protect.

No!!! That was a mistake, thought i had him in there after Ivey. Replace him with Bogs cause im just keeping the youngsters for now.

and the last one is inconsequential. Bagley, I guess, but I’d be happy dumping that contract.

I’d be down for keeping Bojan if we can extend him at a reasonable price.

So pretending the expansion draft is right now to make everyone in play;

The obvious- Bey, Cunningham, Stewart, Duren , Ivey, Livers, Hayes, Bojan.

Bagley could go either way, but I’d take the risk.

We’re losing one of ; Diallo, Burks, or Joseph

Think all of the above could have clearly defined roles on a very good team (assuming they develop where needed)

Bags probably gets selected as he's young and locked up.

Diallo probably gets selected too cause he's young, athletic and has shown flashes

Noel, Burks & CoJo are expiring so who cares if we lose them early?

I'm forgetting 2 dudes but with the bloated training camp roster they're irrelevant anyway

Any expansion draft wouldn't occur until the offseason at the earliest; meaning that Hayes will either have proven to pan out or will be on his way out the door.

Bojan will be out the door at that point as well

Hayes (if he pans out); Whoever we get back for Bojan if he doesn't. Bagley gets bumped down on the priority list if he can't be better at defense.

I think it's telling that this doesn't seem to be a very hard exercise. We need more talent.

I wonder how they will do the next expansion. Back in the day, there were longer deals . I think the lakers technically have only 2 guys under contract for next year. That's extreme, but it's not unusual for a team to have 5+ free agents each year. It's not like the league can force free agents to go join an expansion team.

Interesting point. But the expansion team wouldn’t fill up their roster w the draft and just hit free agency w tons of cap space.

Acquiring their bird rights might be worth something. Either to retain them being able to pay them more or to S&T them elsewhere.

The last time, they limited CLT to 2/3 of the cap to keep them from doing that. The existing owner were the ones making the rules and they didn't want their own free agents getting poached.

It depends on when in the offseason this happens. Bojan will be an unrestricted free agent, so not subject to the expansion draft.
