When Do You Think We'll Win Our Next Title?

Maybe you can think we won't. I think we'll have one in 2030, so 8 years from now. Gores has money to spend, Weaver has been good so far, but the talk is just that, and we need a playoff berth before we're all old.

2025-26 season

6th year Stew, Bey, Hayes
5th year Cade, Livers
4th year Duren, Ivey
3rd year Wembanyama, Howard
Plus 2023 summer FA ????

10 man rotation that has played together 3 straight years without a single change in the regular rotation. They all know each other incredibly well. Wemba mania has taken over the league and the Pistons squad looks like a team to be reckoned with.

23-24 = 45 wins and 6th seed, but lose in the 1st round
24-25 = 55 wins and 2nd seed, but lose in the ECF
25-26 = 65 wins and the best record in the NBA on the way to their first of many championships together.

Having seen all three, when your a fan of the team, you just know when they are truly competitive in the sense of title bound.

I don't see a hint of a twinkle yet. Could be 5 years. Could be another 30.

Win is hard to predict unless we know we have a generational type player. I think we can start having some title equity within 3years though depending on development and who we us our space on

We will have an elite team within 5 years. Playing in ECFs. Cade/Ivey/Duren being discussed for All Star teams. We will be happy as fans.

But…
It takes some magic and luck to win an NBA Championship. We are sort of a younger version of Memphis. They are awesome. But they couldn’t get past GSWs last year.

Just for us to get out of the East, Boston will be loaded for awhile, and Giannis still has some greatness left w the Bucks. Orlando is on the same trajectory as us. A few more players for the Pacers and they should be elite as well. The West has its own set of craziness with New Orleans and Houston set on great trajectories. And whoever drafts Victor should become a future contender.

So it could be 30 years before we get another Championship. But hopefully the stars align and Cade/Ivey/Duren/Victor can get it done.

Usually the best player on a championship team is at least 27 when they win their first title (Giannis was ahead of schedule by a little). Cade is 21 right now. Obviously it's unclear still if he's even going to hit the ceiling of being that type of player, but he's our best bet for it currently. So I'd say 2028 is the soonest we could realistically hope for (obviously stuff happens and this is all incredibly unpredictable).

It’s wild that 2004 was almost 20 years ago. where does time go, man…

Nah I would probably be robbed just like Gores has been by people around him. To someone smart enough to be a billionaire but that's not high all the time and being robbed, someone like Mr Davidson, our franchise will continue to be a joke as long as we have a bad owner, Gores is not the worst owner in the NBA, so things could be worst.

I more or less agree with this. While I'm more hopeful about this potential of the team than I was at any point in the 2010s, I don't have that feeling I did with the early Goin' To Work teams in the Carlisle days, watching the Pistons catch lightning a bottle building that team, where I just *knew* something great was going to eventually happen.

Gores has been a pretty atrocious owner. I have some hope he's finally seen the light and has turned a corner since the rebuild began in 2020, but the Pistons pissed away an entire decade during the 2010s (mostly futilely) chasing 8 seeds at Gores' behest.

The head coach will have much to do with that, and Casey isn't it.

When we finally get a true superstar to build around we can this conversion. Not having a superstar makes it harder to predict that.

You certainly could have said the same thing 20 years ago in December 2002.... But I do agree we're currently so far away its not really worth discussing.

I remember calling in on the radio and arguing with Pat Caputo when the team landed Rasheed. That guy knew nothing about the Pistons, and he said the Pistons had no shot at a title because they landed a "hot-head".

Man that team was absurd defensively. It created an impossible standard for all of us who watched them grow into a team the league had to change the rules because of, the very next year after they won the title.

I started watching the Pistons in the late 80s, so I've been around all the championships and the teams had a lot in common.
Defense is a must. And on offense, move the ball and take good shots.

I've made fun of Tom a ton on the official (now defunct) Pistons.com message board, but I'll half-defend him. Gores hasn't been cheap, and I think getting SVG looked good in the beginning. He hired Ed Stefanski as an "adviser", and now Troy Weaver, and I'm satisfied with him so far. We've had horrible drafters, and he's been we've had in a LONG time. The trades he's made are good. The only thing I'd want is to stop signing average guys, but again, I understand wanting to wait until the time is right before signing that Max guy, but you have to start a great foundation to attract other players, and that Max player would also need to build chemistry with our guys, which is difficult with Cade out for the season. Yes, it's helped Killian, but when Cade comes back, then we're basically starting over in a way, considering we'll have (most likely) a Top 5 pick.

I’ve absolutely no idea.

Did anyone have us winning a title in 2004 after we lost Hill in 2000? I don’t think building a team like that could happen in 2022, but this game becomes inherently unpredictable once you start thinking more than a year or two into the future.

it's so hard to win a title and even harder to predict exactly when it will happen.

an easier question to answer would be when will the pistons make the playoffs, and to that i'd say not within the next two years. we have the cap space to try to acquire some more vets which would make a jump quicker but if we're mostly relying on internal improvement i'm going to say yeah, at least two years.
