Would You Trade The 1st Pick?

I think I would. I worry about those tall guys and injuries. I'd love to get a young player who is already great, but I'm also impatient. Everyone had OKC finishing last, and here they are, without Chet.

I'm in the minority that positively does not want VW, so yes, I would absolutely trade the pick.

Nope. You don't pass on generational talents, even if there is risk. You put him with Duren in the frountcourt and take your chances.

If we get the 1st overall? No. Wemby is a risk, but the reward is worthwhile. You miss 100% of shots you don't take.

That said, for the hypothetical to really be worthwhile, I suppose it depends on what's on offer for it? Everything has a price.

The year Zion was the clear #1, yes, I would have traded it. He had (and has) glaring issues that were very likely to lead to injury problems.

VW is indeed 7’5” or so in shoes and skinny, and folks that height do tend to have more problems. He is not, however, narrow-shouldered like Chet or super-crazy skinny like Manute Bol or rookie Poku. So no, this isn’t a pick I’d trade. I’m sure Wemby won’t fill out like Giannis or anything, but he’s likely going to be fairly normal looking eventually.

Think Ralph Sampson… and yes, I know what happened there.

No. You never trade the 1st pick no matter what.

Boston did pretty good trading the first pick for Tatum. I will always wonder what trades we turned down in 2021 for the first pick. SGA plus a pick or two would have been solid.

Not unless we are getting Giannis or Jokic in return.

Trading Wembanyama is a good way for a GM to look like a historically notable moron.

I get the concern about potential injury but you're giving up transcendent player upside. No sane GM would even consider dealing that pick, that's arguably the most valuable assets in sports the moment that team wins the lottery.

Fultz isn't Wembanyama

He was responding to the (incorrect) notion that you should never trade the first pick. Not all first picks are created equally.

I wouldn't trade this #1 pick unless it was a ridiculous overpay. Ownership also won't because its estimated VW will instantly add a half billion to a franchise's valuation..... not to mention make it that much more attractive for a potential buyer. With teams like Portland and Charlotte up for sale you can certainly see why a team would want to move up from #2 or #3 and add future firsts and other young talent to get VW.

No but the question was about this particular pick which is Wembanyama but... fair enough, the 1st pick should be available in some drafts.

Yes. His body isn't built for the rigors of an 82 game NBA season. Too many examples of his body-type faltering. And he's already had a stress fracture in his leg. If someone offered the Pistons a haul, I'd pull the trigger.

I wouldn't trade it too much potential there

No.

You can poke holes in him- give me reasons that he's risky. Even if I grant that those things are true (and I do not), he's categorically our best shot at a generational talent for years to come.

It's...just not something you deal away. That's the way it is.

They drafted who they wanted at #1 but they did it with #3.

Bryan Colangelo is an imbecile.

It would have to be an insane offer. The kind where if Victor doesn’t pan out, it joins the all time worst trades of all time lists.

I doubt that’s possible, so I’d stay at 1.
