Victor Wembanyama comparison
For me Victor Wembanyama reminds me of mix of:
Kevin Durant
Kevin Garrett
Rashard Lewis
and
Rasheed Wallace
But taller
Yours?

If he physically holds up, there won’t be a comp. No one his height has ever played the way he plays.

Do you think his body would hold up over entire seasons if he ends up at 250-260?mattao313 wrote:Taller and he'll fill out like ADPharaoh wrote:Bigger AD? Skinnier is the word.mattao313 wrote:I think he will be a bigger Anthony Davis.

10 year career is good. Yao Ming had a great career and so did Dwight Howard for first 10 years. Same as Roy Hibbert. Big men just get hurt eventually. I want Wenbenyama but I also want Scoot Henderson. I think whoever gets Scoot gets the most available and talented player which could make the difference like Ja and Zion.

Re: Victor Wembanyama comparison
Not just Sampson.
Fair call I'm all on the Wemby bandwagon cause again it sells hope of what could be in 3 years.
But the best ability is availability and there should be real concern given his frame and he has been injured previously.
Adding significant weight doesn't automatically = strength. Remember the story about KD being unable to bench press the bare minimum at the combine? How did that work out?
I don't want or need for Wemby to gain weight - sure he needs to gain strength but that's 2 different things.
Duren, Wemby, Ivey & Cade in 2 years could be absolutely anything. After all these years of shite I'd take those 4 for the next few years and be content.

Re: Victor Wembanyama comparison
From watching his highlights, on defense he sometimes gets beat out on the perimeter and the defender gets to the basket and thinks they have a layup but his arms are so long he is able to still block the shot. It reminds me of Prince defending smaller/quicker guards and he would do the same thing when they got by.... they weren't in the clear with his long arms.
On the perimeter on offense you can certainly see a bit of how KD operates and faces up and his shot is nearly impossible to defend due to his height.

Re: Victor Wembanyama comparison
His offensive capabilities and shooting are going to pay him massive dividends if they continue to develop. He's not quite the smooth deadeye young KD was, but you can see flashes there where he'll fade from the 3 pt arc and make them. Or shoot from the inside the arc over guys
But what's even more exciting is his defense. His defense looks already polished and has an absolute knack to rotate over help side so quick that guys really won't want to go inside against him often. Since good post play is largely an after thought these days, he's likely not going to get guys streamrolling him inside for those worrying he'll need to bulk up 70lbs in his first two years or something crazy
Gradual weight gains focusing on lean muscle mass and working on stamina will do wonders for him. Otherwise he risks having a career like Shawn Bradley where they force fed him calories and tried all sorts of things to make his career miserable

From an inside game standpoint, sure. Sampson had zero shooting outside the paint. Other than being much more athletic than the traditional tall, heavy, back to the basket NBA center, he was still 100% a center.

You watched Ralph Sampson play in his prime? If anything he was kinda like Pistons Sheed where you'd wish he'd camp out in the low post more. He non-ironically played PF with Akeem (the "H" came later). He wasn't some 3P shooting point-forward, but like Wilt he definitely wasn't a stilt.
I was thinking the hype and body type as much as game. Until Isiah, I didn't think too much about the draft. Sampson's the first guy where I really remember the #1 draft hype, where he was this elite college player who'd change the face of basketball because of how tall and fluid he was. I thought he was a toothpick, which is how I see Wenbanyama.

I watched Sampson in his prime and I certainly agree with the body type comparison. I just don't agree with the game play comparison. Go look up his highlight films; they're 99% dunks, finger rolls and baby hooks in the paint. I actually think he was heavier and stronger than VW is but VW definitely has a better all-around game given his outside shooting ability. Which I think is actually over-hyped, but it's better than Sampson's.

Honestly I think he will have injuries with his legs or knees within 5 years. Folks will be disappointed

Injury chance is high, guys his height and frame have trouble with the grueling nba season. But he'll world class training and medical staff, and access to whatever he wants to maintain his body (LeBron spends over $1 million yearly maintaining his body)
I hope he stays healthy and has a great career. He's going to be a joy to watch.
