2023 NBA Draft - 5th Pick - Detroit Pistons
So, I know there's a tidal wave of disappointment washing over the fanbase at the moment but I prefer looking forward. Who do you think the Pistons will take with the fifth pick?
For me it seems like Ausar Thompson is the most likely pick if he doesn't go fourth. A rare athlete that already is an excellent defender and projects to be so in the NBA fills the biggest hole on the roster with what will likely be the best player available. Jarace Walker, Cam Whitmore, and Taylor Hendricks are also pretty high on the list but my initial gut feeling says Ausar.

Take Whitmore. Don’t be dumb. Whitmore has a projectable shot with range, NBA body, and defends.

Brandon Knick, Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond, Killian Hayes, Stanley Johnson, KCP. Same talent level. 20 something win season again.
We need Weaver and Gores to go, else we're not going anywhere.

We'd all actually rather Vege be the first to go.vege wrote:Brandon Knick, Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond, Killian Hayes, Stanley Johnson, KCP. Same talent level. 20 something win season again.

Cam Whitmore or Ausar Thompson is who I'd take. Both of those guys have star potential if they're developed properly.

Also Troy is known for making trades on draft night. I'd look to target the Mavs 10th pick. Offer Bojan or something and take another player. Gradey Dick or GG Jackson or something.

If I'm Weaver, I'm trying to find a way to move up to #3 to grab Miller.
Trade Bojan for the best pick you can get and add it to #5, #31, Stewart. That's probably not enough though.

Thompson can't shoot and is a playmaker. He is not a good fit. I'd go Walker or Whitmore.

These two are my early focus as well. We're somewhat lucky we really need wing help as that's the strongest position at this point in the draft.

He doesn't have the assets and I don't think it's worth it. I like Miller but I just don't think there's a big drop off after him, I also think it's quite possible that he's gone by 3 anyway.
It sucks what transpired but 5 isn't that bad a place to be. I don't see a big separation after Scoot in terms of upside and I actually see some guys that are better fits than Miller for what the Pistons need on wing in terms of the combo of athleticism and defense.
I'm intrigued by Hendricks, the shooting, length and athleticism combo is enticing even though there's not much of a handle with him.
I have a feeling that Walker would be really high on Weaver's list because of the length and defense combo.
Whitmore might have the most upside of this tier but I think he has a lower floor. Ausar Thompson is another option, another athletic defender. Some good options there and really good fits actually, this draft aligns with their biggest need nicely.

Ausar can shoot. His form is good, though he needs to get more reliable. Amen is the one who has some serious flaws in his actual form.

Disappointed for sure but we will still get a good player. And if anyone reads the Athetic, John Hollingers top 20 prospects is a lot different than the mocks - I think we can get a starter if we do our homework. Not worth moving up - Miller isn't going to be that much different than a handful of other players.

There's some good defenders at least at #5
