Cam Whitmore vs. Jarace Walker

Post#1 » by Rip32 » Sat May 20, 2023 4:24 pm

I'm going with Cam! Cam comparison is an athletic version of Jimmy Butler. We need a legitimate scorer and he would provide that. IMO, he can score in a variety of ways i.e. isolation, spotting up or simply going to get a bucket. I don't give a damn about his low assist total in college. The guy is a flat out baller!!!

Jarace will be a good defender but his lack of scoring would hurt us.

Besides, I'm going with the better prospect

I really like Cam Whitmore, I actually think he’s the third best player in the draft, better than Miller and Thompson twins.

If we are choosing Whitmore, we already have Bogan, SF is set.

If we are choosing Walker, PF is set as well and you can expect Bagley Wiseman or Stewart, maybe two of them off the team guaranteed. It also means Weaver has a ton of options in Free agency at SF like Finney Smith for example. I really love him at SF, he’s underrated shooting high volume 40% from 3 and I also believe he’s a big reason Mavs went to WCF that year. There’s a lot of available talent at SF this summer, not at PF.

As much as the NBA loves wings, I do believe they’re becoming a dime a dozen much like guards. There’s no more Lebron in the league anymore or Kawhi. You can see how these superstars can change the game. Nowadays you gotta deal with Jokic and later Wemby. Curry is also slowing down, so less guard play. The game is changing again.

Whitmore isn't a great scorer either. Walker looks like he can be a elite defender and do some playmaking at the 4.

I'm not really dead set on anyone yet though so it can change and I'm usually wrong anyways

Comparing anyone's skills to Jimmy misses the point: it's his mindset you covet! Or should!

Draft that kind of player every time and you won't live in the Lottery for over a decade

IMO Ausar could be a dark horse here also, one of the best on defense in the top 10

EDIT: Instead we're sure to sign Jaylen Brown next year, I would try to pick him

I choose Whitmore due to the higher upside potential. People are knocking him due to his low assist percentage which is fair, but I think it reflects the system he was playing in to an extent. And that's something you hope can be coached out of him. Otherwise the athleticism is elite, the defensive tools are there and the shooting will come around. He looked significantly better in the second half of the season once his hand injury seemed to be on the improve too. As said above, he has the potential to be the best player in this draft not named Wemby or Scoot.

I think nowadays we're caught up in this shooter craze. Imo a player like Whitmore gets a pass because he's a legit scorer. Is Miami asking Jimmy butler to be a shooter? No! We need a scorer

https://www.nba.com/stats/draft/combine-anthro?SeasonYear=2023

Cam Whitmore: 8.00 hand length, 8.25 hand width, 6' 5.75'' height w/o shoes, 8' 7.50'' standing reach, 235.0 lbs., 6' 8.50'' wingspan

Jarace Walker: 9.00 hand length, 10.00 hand width, 6' 6.50'' height w/o shoes, 8' 8.50'' standing reach, 248.6 lbs., 7' 2.50'' wingspan

I'm not sold on either being a real clean fit for the Pistons but between these two it's Whitmore for me. Getting a defensive cog is one of the biggest needs that I see and Walker fits that bill better but I'm not sure his chances are high at carving out a role in the rotation. On the other hand there's a big need for a true wing and Whitmore slots in there nicely.

Whitmore, Walker, Hendricks, Black, and whoever of Miller and the Thompson Twins drops should all be in consideration at #5.

You have to excuse a lot of stuff to sell Whitmore as a high lotto pick

I've seen Whitmore described as a "low-IQ" player, "a bull in a china shop", "tunnel vision", and "ball stopper" on offense... with a lot of people agreeing with those critiques.
I haven't seen/read much about his ability to defend, and I haven't watched the kid play a single game.
The highlight reels are great. I'm just going to trust that ol' Weaver is gonna make the right pick, whoever that be @ 5.

Dont want either. Im
hendricks 1. Dick 2. Easily the two BAP on my board. Honestly ill take the mystery box Thompson over Whitemore or Walker. I could care less what the consensus says not interested
