Pistons Hire Monty Williams 6 year, 72m
There you have it Pistons fans. Can’t call Gores cheap for saving money. This is for all the money Weaver saved Gores the past 4-5 years. Best fit for a culture change, a Weaver connection choice, black coach, contending coach. All in one. Gores went all in on this move.

I've extremely happy with the hire, but Holy CRAP that contract.

Not my money, not cap space money, and the best coach available. Believe in Weave.

Certainly feels like this raises expectations.
Monty said he cried after Phoenix traded away Bridges + Cam Johnson.... makes me wonder if part of this sell deal was us going out and offering Cam Johnson all our cap space .... of course as a RFA Cam could certainly get matched but it'll be interesting to see who we end up pursuing now.

Roster is designed to tank. Now he’s gotta design a winning roster. It’ll happen quickly just wait and see how obvious it was Weaver was trying to lose. Also this makes Weaver more likely to get fired and Monty stays after Weaver so Gores saved himself the trouble of getting rid of both front office and coach if Ollie or Lee didn’t work out.

Wow. That is huge money. All other coaches will love Monty now too.
Weaver is all about drafting the person and having the talent work it out. By all accounts Monty Williams is a really good dude. I sorta think he's basically Casey with better x's and o's.
With that kind of money I wonder what his staff payroll will look like. Does he bring his PHX staff over? Would he consider Ollie or Lee, assuming the latter doesn't get the TO job? Assistant coaches need to keep working and Bud looks like he's taking the year off.

I don't care about the contract. It's not a part of the salary cap and Gores has always seemed willing to pay. Monty Williams is a good person to be sure, I just don't think he's done anything of note without a healthy Chris Paul at either of his stops. There are worse coaches out there, but I think the ceiling is limited for Monty.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

I sincerely hope that this means the team is now in an “improve the team” mode and not just relying on rookies and previous busts to improve.

That’s one thing I never connected with Monty. He’s worked extensively with Chris Paul and CP is the player that Cade said stood out most to him just in the way he controlled the floor. Hopefully there’s benefit to that weird connection.

This was 100% Gores not Weaver. I still don't believe in Weaver, but at least we got a coach upgrade instead of a downgrade and that's great.

Re: Pistons Hire Monty Williams 6 year, 72m
Hopefully Monty brings his 0.5 second offense to Detroit.
Heavily relies on read and react principles and high iq players.
“You want as many guys who can handle the ball and make plays as possible. If you can get five of ’em like that, you’re pretty good. Good players figure it out. They figure out how to share the ball.”
This is the Weaver quote from the end of season that stuck out to me. This philosophy aligns super well with the 0.5 second offense and also aligns pretty closely to what Presti is building in OKC, where they are running Shai/J Williams/Giddey and then Chet
I expect this to have some impact on the draft too

Having someone who knows how to integrate multiple ball dominant guys is a great thing for sure.
