Process Speed Rankings?
OK, with Monty coming on board and likely bringing his .5 seconds or less offense, we need connective playmakers, and high speed processors on offense. We also still need 3 and D wings, of course.
I'd love to hear from the more analytically-oriented out there as well as the draftniks. How would you rank the reasonable prospects for our #5 pick (lets say Thompson Twins, Miller, Whitmore, Black, Hendricks, Wallace at least) in terms of processing speed? How would you rank the reasonable wing targets in free agency?
Thanks for anything y'all are willing to offer on this as I'm not sure how to measure that but I'd be really curious to read some insights on the topic!

Hmm, fair enough, but lets buy into the hype for a bit this time, at least as a thought experiment.

Re: Process Speed Rankings?
Absolutely. I think it's quite a bit different with Monty too as he seems to buy into the five-out alignment where that didn't seem to be much of a thing with Casey for the most part. If that holds true then there won't be much similarity in my eyes.
As far as the draft goes I would think Jarace Walker and Anthony Black top the list of likely prospects available at 5 in terms of processing speed and fit for the 0.5 offense. Amen and Ausar are probably reasonably good fits too with their facilitating and driving ability. Whitmore and sadly Hendricks are probably bumped down if this particular nuance of "fit" is going to be taken into consideration when the draft rolls around.
What doesn't change with this group is the lack of outside shooting prowess. Taylor is the only one that you can say it's a plus attribute for. I don't see Grady Dick as any type of likely option at five but he would be a fit for the offense if Detroit moved back a bit. So I don't think much has changed for the draft besides some minor shifting within tiers.
Defensive ability/upside should also be a huge factor here given Detroit's major need for assistance on the end of the court. While that doesn't necessarily discount any of the guys in play for the fifth pick, where they want to start focusing on a defensive upgrade does. Walker is more of a big that can switch out to the perimeter defensively. Hendricks is that to a lesser extent where he's an odder mix of more rim defense and more nimble perimeter ability. Black probably fits more guarding the backcourt with some size (but not wingspan) to not get killed switching out on some of the forwards. I don't have any doubt about the Thompson twins defending anywhere on the perimeter. Whitmore matches against most combo forwards.
As for free agents... no idea. I don't get too involved in that until the dominoes start falling. There's too much volatility involved for me to feel good about looking into it too much. Obviously Cam Johnson would be great and definitely fits what Monty likes to do, but as a RFA I doubt there's much chance of the Nets letting him go for any likely offer he's going to get.

FAs we haven't discussed beyond the point of exhaustion:
Jalen McDaniels
Bruce Brown
Gary Trent Jr
Caris LeVert
Malik Beasley
Josh Hart
THT
Lonnie Walker
Rui
Reddish
DDV
Damion Lee
Vincent
Strus
Not sure how some of them would fit with our group or their "processing" speed but not everything begins and ends with Grant Williams or Cam Johnson

This 0.5 thing is already being overplayed to death here. The Suns move the ball. There's nothing novel or special about it around the league (just in Detroit). And they certainly aren't on the Warriors level of movement out there.

Yeah the ‘this changes our draft plans’ people are really getting on my nerves!

Re: Process Speed Rankings?
Good list, coordinator! Whitmore, Hendricks, and Walker are the three I've been thinking about the most at #5, so it's good to have a better idea of where they fall on this criteria. Is Walker's shooting really that bad? If he could legitimately stretch defenses, he seems like the best fit.
Darkhorse, but it seems possible Miller could drop to us. Just on the processing speed criteria, anyone have any thoughts on him?

You guys must be really fun at parties. If the topic doesn't interest you or you don't think it's relevant, there's a big old "x" in the corner made just for you.

Re: Process Speed Rankings?
I think anthony black is being over locked. Bad shooter but he's the same size as Whitmore with playmaking and nice feel for the game and is a absolutely dog on defense. If he can get that shot going I see a upgraded Derrick white. I'd take black over Walker easily, besides being slightly bigger he doesn't do anything better on the perimeter.Kalamazoo317 wrote:Good list, coordinator! Re: Process Speed Rankings?
Maybe I'm just burned from Killian's bad shooting and good just about everything else holding him back or making him so frustrating to shoot for, but Black doesn't sound like what we need. I guess what's the case that he's not another Killian?

Re: Process Speed Rankings?
Neither does Walker imo can't shoot, not a true perimeter defender, undersized. Whitmore is closer to what we need but is also undersized and is low bball iq. Blacks potential is just way more versatile then those guys and can slide down to the 3 as he's the same size as Whitmore and athletic.Kalamazoo317 wrote:Maybe I'm just burned from Killian's bad shooting and good just about everything else holding him back or making him so frustrating to shoot for, but Black doesn't sound like what we need. Re: Process Speed Rankings?
Ant and Jarace are the clear top 2 for processing/bball iq imo, on both sides of the ball too

Whitmore is 232, Black is about a 198 to 200 maybe!

Black is athletic. He attacks the basket better than Hayes for sure. He’s aggressive as hell and isn’t indecisive. I think he’ll be a better defender right away.
Shooting is still the question mark.

Black is 210 this ain't the NFL you don't need to carry all that weight in the nba. And even so black will fill outDNice68 wrote:mattao313 wrote:Neither does Walker imo can't shoot, not a true perimeter defender, undersized. Can’t say Black since Amen is within our range. Also Killian is fine at the one, he just shouldn’t ever shoot the ball. With black or amen it’s another project and I’m tired of those guys. Maybe next year after we’ve proven we can get better at winning. This year my choices are whitmore Hendricks and walker. I don’t even mind Ausar either. Imo the best move is to trade down with Jazz or get mavs pick. Get two chances at one more potential star and never look back at the draft again.

Re: Process Speed Rankings?
What makes Black a project but not walker or Whitmore? What killian is has no baring on Black. Killian is terrible and is scared of scoring the ball or even going to the rim. That's not Black.Spider156 wrote:mattao313 wrote:Neither does Walker imo can't shoot, not a true perimeter defender, undersized. Walker I think offensively he’s a project, he’s better than Stewart for sure, he moves better and jumps higher but his jumpshot isn’t great. I think he’s much better midrange though I’m not sure until I see it in the NBA. Defensively I think he’s as good if not better than Stewart, I think he’s got all the physical tools and just needs experience to gain awareness. He can jump so he’s a better defender than Stewart and defensive rebounder. Stewart is a great offensive rebounder. I think they’re similar but Walker has more potential driving in the paint since he’s gotten more reps at it while younger.
I think Whitmore is the third most ready offensively to score all 3 levels. His only concern is efficiency much like Bey. I think he’s better than Bey because he can’t dunk next to the best in the draft class. He also fits perfect off the bench at 19 he can take his time because we are so desperate for offense off the bench. As a starter he fits great next to Ivey and Cade since he’s not a playmaker for others moreso himself. I think defensively he’s got more upside than Bey because of his jumping ability, as far as lateral movement he might fit small ball PF more than SF.
The reason I said Killian is because as far as I know and I know a lot it’s looking like they wanna run him at backup point guard one more season. Personally I think he’s broken with his confidence that he’s not even a good passer anymore. He used to take more chances, I’ll say he’s good at not turning the ball over and getting steals. Defensively I think Killian is really good personally. I think he passes the eye test and steals average says it all. IF killian is to stay I want him to never shoot the ball. Play like Draymond, Rondo, never think of scoring. It’s been done before but his passing needs to be on point. We’ll see, anything can happen if you surround him with shooters off the bench like Bogan, Hendricks, maybe Whitmore.
I just watched some Black highlights and I understand why fans like him. I think he can easily get drafted between 6-9. I think we can get him but we need a wing desperately. But he could be best available talent you’re right. He could be Jalen Williams of the draft.
