Wizards are trying to send Chris Paul to 3rd team before they finalize trade with Suns. Should we have interest?

Wizards are finally trying to rebuild and likely want young prospects or shorter contracts for Paul.

Chris Paul has $30.8 million this year if you keep him and then nothing is guaranteed for next season unless you don't waive him before next June.

Obviously I wouldn't even ask if he makes sense if it wasn't for the Paul and Monty connection.

We could jump in and send the tanking Wizards Wiseman(or Bagley although they might prefer Wiseman's expiring) + Hayes for Chris Paul. We could also include Burks if they need/want him to get the deal done.

Thoughts? We obviously might have to sell Paul on the idea that he would only have to come in until the trade deadline and then if we can't trade him to a contender he wants to go to we'd instead waive him and let him go sign elsewhere for a playoff run. For us it'd be a guy you bring in to help mentor the young guys and help Monty in his transition into coaching the Pistons.

Paul $30.8 for Bagley $12.5 + Burks $9.5 + Hayes $7.4 (total $29.4 million) would have us losing $1.4 million in cap space as well.

I'd love it if we didn't have to give up major assets. Paul's mentality has shown to rub off on young impressionable teams. He obviously isn't going to be the force impacting wins and losses as he was a few years ago, but I'm guessing we have salary to spare and it's best for guys like Cade, Ivey, and Duren to see the necessary mentality every day up close.

Most I'd give for that is Bagley/Hayes.

Isn't Burks technically going to be worth more than netting an aging and overpaid CP3? I was thinking we could at least swing a later first from a team looking to shore up their lineups before the playoff push

I view Burks as an asset, just not Bags nor Hayes so I don't think we need to sweeten the deal for the two teams at all. At best maybe a distant second pick since the original trade the Wizards are essentially getting a clean slate salary dump via waive and a bunch of 2nds for Beal which is laughable from what they could have gotten even 2 years ago

Burks potentially being a tradeable asset for them is likely what's needed to be the incentive to take on that extra year of salary for Bagley. If not, I think Wiseman + Hayes would be the more likely trade over Bagley simply because Bagley has that extra year of guaranteed money. I'm not sure Weaver is ready to move off of Wiseman yet at this point though.

Paul will want to go to a contender. No way he'd want to come here even with promise of mud season trade or buyout. He can land in LA right now if DC would accept that pupu platter of Pistons cast offs for him, LAC could match that.

I'd keep an eye on the other guy in the trade. Shamet. Monty loves him, for some reason, according to Suns fans.

He might prefer it, as long as Detroit was willing to waive him after the trade deadline... because he would then get to control his own destiny. He might really prefer to go to the Lakers over the Clippers given his history with the Clippers.

I do agree though, he won't want to finish out his career in Detroit we'd have to take him knowing it would just be for a short period of time to help develop our young core.

I love CP3 but he’s going to want to finish up on a contender. It’s not worth a rental because while we wouldn’t be giving up player/draft pick assets, we’re giving up cap space which itself is a valuable asset.

I feel like the Wizards are going to do something like; Paul to the Clippers for Bones Hyland, 30, and (2 of these 3) Covington, Batum, Marcus Morris. Preserve cap space and act like you actually got something in return for Chris Paul

CP3 won’t (and shouldn’t) have any interest in coming here where he’d play a predominantly mentor role on a losing team.

There will be teams where he can slide in and get major minutes while vying for a title.

I'm a CP3 fan but no - it's not the time for him to come here. I want to use our space and assets to build some more.

2 years from now? Yeah sure. But by then he's probably retired and even if not he's the wrong option.

The timeline doesn't work.

Would he help Cade? Absolutely!! But there's other ways to do that.

CP3 won't have to worry about getting injured in the second round of the playoffs here.

I'd feel more comfortable about Cade as our future PG if he (or we) could defend at PG.
And no, Killingme Hayes does not count for this purpose.
