$7.722 million Room Exception FA Targets

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Thu Jun 29, 2023 1:28 am

We have $28 million in cap space and two roster spots remaining, but once we use our cap space we'll also get something called a "Room Exception" which will allow us to sign another free agent for $7.722 million this season and it can be for either a 1 year or 2 year contract.

Who are some possible targets for this player, who essentially with be the last player added to our roster. Ideally its someone good enough to break into our 10 man rotation and push someone else out.

Trey Lyles
Cory Joseph
Hamidou Diallo
Taurean Prince (Wolves just passed on paying him $7+ million this year, but a solid defender and 3 point shooter)...( Likely let go so they can use the MLE without becoming a luxury tax team.)
Russell Westbrook
Kevin Love
Will Barton
Josh Richardson (not sure where his contract range is he was $12 he likely is too good for this contract level)
Dillon Brooks (his status around the league couldn't have fallen this much...horrible on offense but good on D)
Dwight Powell
Jae Crowder
Dario Saric
Mason Plumlee
Seth Curry
Joe Ingles
Jaxson Hayes
Kendrick Nunn
Torrey Craig
Jeff Green
Justice Winslow
Matisse Thybulle
Derek Jones Jr
Dennis Schroeder
TJ Warren
Ayo Dosunmo (RFA)
Mo Wagner
Yuta Wantanabe
Damion Lee

It’s most likely a veteran point guard like Javon Carter

Jalen Duren / James Wiseman / Marvin Bagley
FA PF / Isaiah Stewart / Eugene Omoruyi
Bojan Bogdanovic / Ausar Thompson / Isaiah Livers
Jaden Ivey / Alec Burks /
Cade Cunningham / Killian Hayes / Marcus Sasser

So it's most likely a guard, possibly someone that can shoot and defend. Jevon Carter check those boxes, but we don't have a lot of minutes.

Torrey Craig is a possibility imo.

Either Jalen McDaniels (SF/PF), Jaxson Hayes (PF/C), or Taurean Prince (SF/PF)

Kinda depends on who (if anyone) we get with our cap space.

If we do get Cam, definitely a guard, or maybe a sg/sf.

Duren - Wiseman - Bagley

Stewart, Bojan, Ausar, Livers, Eugene

Cade, Ivey, Burks, Hayes, Sasser

Assuming we do land Cam with our 28 mil we have a lot of depth on the wing so I'd imagine we get a vet guard.

Carter fits the bill

Jevon Carter or Torrey Craig depending on who we land with the $28 million.

We're trying to turn him into a 4, which he is not, but it's where we're likely going to give him minutes next season.

We seem to view him as a 4 so I listed him with the other 3s and 4s

Agreed.

But it seems we want him to be a 4.

Duren 30 - Stewart 18
Cam 30 - Stewart 10 - Bojan 8
Ausar 28 - Bojan 20

Wiseman back up 5
Eugene and Livers back up the 3 & 4

Trade Bagley for a vet 4/5 to help the kids.

I love all these dreams in which Killian, Wiseman and Bagley don’t play.

Pretty sure that’s just a dream, though.

I know it doesn't make any sense for this roster but I still like Thybulle for his defense.

Eric Gordon is a vet that joins the possible Room Exception area. Shot 42+% from deep last year. He played for Monty Williams for four seasons with the Pelicans from about 2011 to 2015.... of course there was an incident many years ago where Monty and Gordon got into a screaming match and Monty ended up benching him so perhaps their relationship isn't the best.

That list is not impressive. I know it's pocket change but I hope they aren't breaking our rotation.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy
