How much would you offer Herb Jones?

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Fri Jun 30, 2023 12:41 pm

How much would you offer Herb Jones? He's an unexpected newcomer to the FA market and we haven't really gotten to discuss him. I know he's got a few big fans on these boards. Is it possible we make a shift to Herb? The Pelicans can only offer 4 years $53.3 million but they can match a larger offer... .similar to the situation Austin Reaves is in with LA as they are both on early bird rights after playing two years in the NBA. An offer starting at $15 million would put the Pelican into the luxury tax this season.

1. 4 years $55 million (slightly above MLE) ($13, $13.5, $14.0, $14.5)
2. 4 years $60 million ($15, $15, $15, $15)
3. 4 years $64.5 million ($15, $15.75, $16.5, $17.25)
4. 4 years $72 million ($18, $18, $18, $18)
5. 4 years $80 million ($20, $20, $20, $20)

------------------------------------------------------

I'm leaning towards #3 being the right amount, but I think there's a decent chance they still match it. #4 makes it much less likely they match IMO and they almost certainly don't match #5.

A FA day 1 offer of 4/80 to Herb Jones would be SUCH a Detroit Pistons move!

I’m almost 100% sure they have a deal already agreed upon. No way a team lets a 30 mpg starter go after declining their team option for $2 million.

The length and athleticism on the wing with him and ausar would be fun to watch though.

The absolute maximum the Pistons can offer him. Period.

Weaver preaches defense, Monty preaches it, and this whole teams identity is defense, winning championships, and each time the league changes rules because of the teams defense.

Herb is absolutely, positively, going to be a DPOY candidate for years to come, so you land him, and start Asser at the PF position.

Cade
Ivey
Herb
Asser
Duren

Herb will get a ton of wide open shots because of Cade/Ivey, and his percentages will go up. Asser needs to add some weight, but Draymond plays PF and they are the same height, and Asser is supposed to be a great passer, defender, and intangible guy.

I am a huge Herb fan. Let the young core grow together. Could be amazing.

I'm also a huge fan. I'd pay whatever. I'm so tired of "potential"... He can defend great right now.

What is the absolute maximum the Pistons can offer? Can they balloon it up over 100 million at the backend, to make sure the Pelicans crap their pants at matching?

I’d really be happy in that 4/55 - 4/65 range

Absolute max we could offer is that 4/118 (ish) deal we’ve been debating about throwing at Cam.

We could just throw it at Herb instead. That would be the max we could offer

Pelicans can only offer four years and $53.3 million( full MLE) but they can match up to four years $99 million they would not be able to match a four year $100 million offer.

2 answers, thank you both.

Then thats what I do. Herb is 6'8, and Asser is 6'7. That would be a killer defensive wing combo.

I know I shouldn't get excited, but damn it now I am.

He fits the timeline perfectly as well.

On the ol Sirius NBA radio a guy called in talking about Detroit going after Herb and they shot it down right away saying that New Orleans is gonna keep him no matter what and likely already has a deal in place since they let him out of the team option

Things can change.

Let’s assume NO was gonna him the 4/53

If we call him at 6:00pm tonight and are talking 4/100, things change

We could even expand it to a S&T deal so the Pelicans “save face.”

Something like Bogey/Hayes for Herb and Trey Murphy

Herb Jones/Jaxon Hayes for Bogey/Wiseman or Bagley

There is no way he’s leaving New Orleans. Otherwise they would have picked up the option. His agent would get blackballed

Until the ink is signed, nothing is guaranteed. NO is limited to what they can offer and match. If we really want him, he could be had. Herb is an elite defender already

You can't have a deal in place already, and I don't see any universe where Herb turns down 4/98 to sign a smaller deal, or if Detroit goes big, can New Orleans even match? 4/100?

Its probably a pipe dream anyway, same with Cam. Its gonna be something out of left field no one was even thinking about knowing Weaver.

Betcha all of us are gonna be like;

Herbert Jones is a net negative offensive player I don't understand the infatuation with him
