Would you trade Bojan for Tyler Herro?

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Mon Jul 3, 2023 1:45 pm

#1 Dame has asked for a trade out of Portland and wants to go to Miami as his preferred landing spot.

#2 Miami is unwilling to trade Butler or Bam for Dame, so the trade will for sure be centered around Herro is it is going to happen at all.

#3 Portland already has Simons, Scoot, and Sharpe at the 1/2/3 spots and reportedly doesn't want Herro back in the trade. They want Miami to find a third team to take Herro... and they want expirings, draft picks, and perhaps a some young prospects.

#4 Herro shares an agent (Jeff Schwartz) with Cade, Bagley, and Wiseman.

#5 I'd assume Bojan would end up going to a fourth team and not Portland but that part really isn't super relevant.
----

There's obviously some concern on Detroit's end to make this trade because Herro isn't known for his defense, is very high usage, and is coming off a pretty significant injury. He is starting his 4 year $120 million contract this year that many of us didn't want to go that high for Cam and Cam is likely a better fit for our young core. The main reason to consider it is his age, Herro is 24 and Bojan is 34 so getting 10 years young on this swap gives us someone who fits our timeline. Best case this would end up being like when Joe D traded Stackhouse for RIP.

NO...Herro is essentially a younger version of Joe Harris. Besides, he's not going to start here which Cade and Ivey in the back court.

Herro is pretty good for that 6th man of the year type of combo guard role. Here he would probably want to start and he's pretty expensive.

Herro removed "Miami Heat Guard" from his twitter last night. It seems like a trade for Dame could be close. It'll be interested to see what third team ends up taking Herro if Portland sticks to its guns about preferring to not have him come back to Portland in this trade.

Not to say that it is impossible yet there are certain teams that a would tend to stay away from because of their coaching and system. Miami, San Antonio, Golden State, and possibly Boston have players that show better in their system, than transferred to a different team

Absolutely I would.

Starting lineup (defensively)

Ivey
Herro
Cade

Cade is Absolutely big enough to play the SF spot defensively.

Offense

Cade
Ivey
Herro
Stewart
Duren

That is a dynamic, and offensive group.

Cade
Ivey
Herro
Asser
Duren

Athletic, and fast group, teams will have a real problem guarding.

You have to ship out Bojan in this deal.

Nope. Herron is overpaid by Miami to create a tradeable asset for big name. He's not worth that and will be exposed a bit when away from Miami.

Detroit has expiring veteran shooting and no place for Herro to start.

Cade could guard.some traditional SF but I think that is undercutting some specialness and advantages he gives with his size st the 2 to force fit Herro in.

I'd rather have Bojan for $20 million than Herro for $30 million. Better roster fit, fills the need for veteran leadership, seems like more of a team-oriented and connective guy who can be efficient as a primary or secondary option, and I just don't see Herro as a significant upgrade, just a higher cost. Pretty sure we'd have to make other moves with this as well to free up the $10 million difference.

I'm just throwing "stuff" at the wall to see what sticks.

I'm just dreading this upcoming season. It stinks of disaster, even with a lot more offseason to go.

Does anybody in Detroit want Tyler Herro's style? For basketball, Spo I think has done a great job maximizing what he brings to the table, but it's hard not to notice that they improved when he stopped playing (barely winning the play-in to NBA Finals). I do agree that Cade's flexibility at one through three makes it possible for Herro to start with them. Just don't know it would work out.

No.

A rebuilding team only gets a couple of shots to blow their wad. We obviously chose NOT to do that this year. It’s the long term money that matters. We shouldn’t give away long term money unless we know that player is going to be a star - not just an upgrade, and certainly not for a sixth man.

C: Duren / Wiseman
PF: Stewart / Bagley (or Harris)
SF: Bojan (or Herro) / Ausar
SG: Ivey / Burks
PG: Cade / Morris

Realistically Herro could just swap right in to where Bojan is in our rotation. Herro is a better rebounder than Bojan. Both are poor defenders but at least Herro is young and athletic so there's hope (much like with Ivey) that its an area he can improve. Bojan is still a much more efficient scorer but Herro has been a 20+ PPG scorer the past two seasons at essentially league average TS%

That said, I'm on the fence on this trade and not sure I'd do it. The appeal of getting younger is there for sure, but the opportunity cost of what we may possibly instead be able to get for Bojan at the deadline... or perhaps with cap space instead of Herro next summer. Cap space feels less exciting now than it did a week ago though so finding the right trade of our expiring contracts for a good starter might end up having more appeal than just going into next year with a bunch of cap space again.

This. It’s not that Herro couldn’t make us incrementally better, but it would take away a home run shot for a better player.

No a first last year would’ve been wonderful, that ship has sailed. I think bojan gets hurt again this year.

Cade, Ivey, Sasser - too many guards.

He makes $30 million a year which will be fine in 3 years, but not now.

That said - I'd rather Herro at 30 million than Bagley, Wiseman and Hayes. Herro, Omoruyi and G-league guy at $30 million or Bagley, Wiseman and Hayes.

Would you trade Wiseman + Burks + Hayes for Herro? Portland might actually have some interest in Wiseman and Hayes if they are rebuilding. I'm sure Billups has watched a ton of Killian.

herro and poole are pretty much the same players in my eyes. they are both talented scorers but pretty much bring nothing else to the table.

that might be valuable to bring off the bench for a contending team who has their bird rights (they both got extended for 4 years ~$30M per year) but to bring them onto a building team and committing that much for that long is a bad idea imo.

i'd rather use bojan in a trade for a forward someone like patrick williams if that was possible.
