I like him but that feels like a lot for the role I project he can have.

Re: Beef Stew? More please
Based on the projected salary cap I think this is a great deal

16m per seems like a reasonable deal. At that price it doesn’t hurt us if he has a first big off the bench role in the future.

Either the long-term starting 4 or the long-term backup to both the 4 and 5 spots. Not a bad deal.

Hopefully they’ve been seeing good progress behind the scenes. Not a terrible contract but I really hope they get Bagley up outta here

Re: Beef Stew? More please
Players with similar average annual value:
Jonathan Isaac ($17.4m)
Bogdan Bogdanovic ($17m)
Lauri Markkanen ($16.9m)
Luguentz Dort ($16.5m)
Kevin Huerter ($16.3m)
Davis Bertans ($16m)
Marcus Morris Jr. ($16m)
Dejounte Murray ($16m) (just signed $30m/year extension)
Isaiah Stewart ($16m)
Kevin Porter Jr. ($15.9m)
Max Strus ($15.6m)
Mitchel Robinson ($15m)
Luke Kennard ($14m)
On this list, obviously Markkanen is underpaid and Murray just got adjusted with the extension. I know for sure I'd prefer him over Isaac, Bertans, Morris, Porter, and Kennard. I think Stewart fits in with most of the names. It seems to be mostly 4th-7th guys on a team. If Stewart can keep making incremental growth, the contract taking him through ages 23-26 should be good. Also, assuming an ever-increasing salary cap, the deal will be worth relatively less by the year.
A lot depends on how they use him. His offensive efficiency suffered last year by asking him to become a stretch big. They need to either keep him him as a space eater down low or he needs to become good enough of a shooter to merit being a floor spacer.
EDIT: The team option makes it even better. If he shows no growth in 3 years, Detroit can cut him loose. If he shows a lot of growth, it's a bargain. It's also a very tradeable contract, although I'd like him to stick around.

Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

16 mil per isn't too bad when you consider the full MLE atm is approx 13 mil
Obviously would have preferred more of a discount since this gives him a sense of security going into the season but it's not a terrible contract.
Now we know Monty actually likes him I wonder if he'll start at the 4 or we'll bring him off the bench.

Re: Beef Stew? More please
A little more than I expected (recall that I said I’d jump all over 4/50 and sign him now), but I’m still happy. Stew’s my second favorite Piston, and I’m glad he’s likely going to be around a while.

It's not that bad and about what i expected. If it does have a TO then im fine with giving him a couple extra per year

Keep in mind that this is an extension so when it kicks in, the cap will be quite a bit higher. This is a decent contract for a bench big, borderline starter. I'd say that it's a tradeable contract at worst, he has a pretty high floor going forward and some room for growth as he continues to expand his perimeter game.
Edit: and the 4th year is a team option. Even better

Yeah, there was no way he was getting paid less than Bagley so there's that. Hopefully that 3 ball becomes even better this year

Agreed that this deal isn’t bad. If he has a good year, he’d probably get more on the open market most likely. I’m willing to see what he does this year.

Re: Beef Stew? More please
Stew’s definitely starting at the 4, though I doubt he gets 30 minutes a game.
You can’t start either of those other ducking fumbasses if you are trying to win games.

Re: Beef Stew? More please
Fourth year is a team option. Next year a four year MLE offer will essentially be 4 years $60 million or very close to that. He was for sure going to get more than Bagley got. Four years $60 would have been great but four years $64 million with the last year being a team option is just as good with that added flexibility at the end just in case he doesn't progress like you'd hope he will.
EDIT: Just saw its 4 years $60 million with a possible $1 million per year performance incentive so overall even better. Great deal for us IMO even if he ends up being an energy 6th/7th man in the rotation.

Re: Beef Stew? More please
This extension just depends on where you project Stewart. I think that he tops out as a decent rotation big that gives hustle, rebounding, and maybe, potentially some spacing but not rim protection. Not a starter on a good team. I think his defensive impact has been massively overrated, personally I don't think he is a net-positive defensive player given his position and role, and I doubt that he will improve much on that end. I don't think that player type is an above MLE player.
Also, like Harris trade, I don't get the point. I don't think this contract improves Stewart as a trade asset, and it takes away cap flexibility. We "rewarded" him by paying him earlier, which hinders our roster flexibility. It's not an albatross, but it's not the value that NO got with Herb Jones. I think that's an interesting comparison, NO was able to get better value for a more valuable player-type and needed that value more than Detroit due to having a more restrictive payroll. Another good comparison is Grant Williams, who does everything Stewart does but better, and got less.
My prediction from the Joe Harris thread:
Personally, I still think this is all we're getting, plus maybe dumping Killian (probably to SAS).

No, I think Weaver thinks this is a good use of space, and I think he's completely wrong. What has this man ever cooked? There are 3-5 All-Star players in flux rn, and the teams vying for them will need help from cap space teams to make trades. This is a terrible use of an asset right before reagency.
I'll tell you now, we're getting this and a 3-year $54 million extension for Stewart, and that's it.

Count that baby and a foul!
