OT: B1G Realignment

The news today is that the B1G is also going to add Washington and Oregon - making them the Big 18

Michigan
Ohio State
Michigan State
Penn State
Rutgers
Maryland
Indiana
Purdue
Illinois
Northwestern
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Iowa
Nebraska

USC
UCLA

Oregon
Washington

How does everyone feel about this expansion?

Also, I’m betting they end up becoming a Big-20 conference by still adding 2 more schools. Likely candidates include:

Stanford
Cal
Utah
UNC
Duke
FSU
Clemson
VaTech
GaTech

I’m fine with the expansion. The more the merrier because it helps grow more competition. The issue I find in football is the Playoffs only allow 4 teams and the Playoffs made the Bowl Games less relevant. I find it sad that a team has to play perfect all season and just one game throws them off the Playoffs. There’s a few things I don’t like about football that keeps me away from watching the sport. The holding call alone is such a subjective call and it can neutralize a whole drive without another chance to score again specially with the time waste. I’m glad basketball doesn’t have that problem.

Microcosm of today's society...Greed and lust for money! 13 teams will be bad to mediocre year in and year out. The funny thing I read was BIG presidents mentioned it was about research. Research for what? Medicine? Well we know Big pharma isn't in the business of curing maybe treating. F the BIG10 or whatever name you want to call them

I personally dislike UCLA and UCS joining B1G- disliked it the moment it came out.

I ironically dislike it slightly less with Oregon and Washington joining.

But I'm a west coaster- that's my perspective.

PAC 12 did a pretty poor job which is why teams are leaving in droves.

Utah is joining Big 12. As are Arizona and ASU.

Their #1 target remains Notre Dame, but ND likely never agrees to join.

Big10 is doing an excellent job on doing what it has to do to survive. Pac12 did a horrible job and will just dissolve. It’s not like the Big10 is evil but they didn’t just sit and wait and instead got ahead of the problem.

I like the Washington and Oregon adds. It certainly helps some of the travel issues. And living near the Bay Area, I’d love Cal and Stanford to get added so I could drive and watch my Wolverines every few years.

Notre Dame would be a good fit. I know they like their independence (and their NBC tv $$$), but I think the BigTen deal, per team, is higher than theirs, so maybe they will change their attitude.

I think it is obvious now that there will be 40-60 teams in 3-4 super conferences and they will dictate everything for the college football playoffs. The Big Ten just secured themselves to be players.

Playing some of these teams in conference play certainly won't feel like Big 10 football anymore. Plus, with the conference getting so big I think they should reduce the # of out of conference games to 2 per year.

It's really about the revenue that college football brings in, which is why it will be interesting to see whether or not Clemson stays in the ACC. They are a power house, but the ACC doesn't generate the sports $$$ that the SEC or Big Ten does from college football.

August 15th is the deadline for Clemson (or any other ACC team) to exit the ACC for the 24 season.

As a Michigan fan and a Big Ten fan in general: eff Notre Dame.

ND has had plenty of opportunities to join and has spurned every one. Let them and their sense of entitlement go elsewhere.

The way they left the rivlary game between Michigan and them was one of the most gutless things I've seen.

One of the signs of a good college football season is channel surfing to NBC and seeing national broadcasters being forced to call a ND game where their team is getting waxed by the opposition. They literally can't shift elsewhere to another game likely due to their contract and get stuck in this weird purgatory that I find hilarious. It doesn't happen very often but when it does it's priceless!

It sure “feels” like Cal and Stanford are logical Big 10 adds now.

Who knows though.

Nothing better than watching ND get crushed! :D

It’s goofy either way, but calling it the Big Ten with 18 teams is even goofier.

Stanford seems great in terms of being a great academic school that is well-rounded athletically as well.

I think Cal is just the other easy choice because of circumstances.

Both of these teams are behind the 8-ball to find a new home and I would have figured you would have heard something from other conferences if they intended to snap them up quickly. I think they may be able to be had for pretty good terms by the B10 if the decide to go that route.

2 week playoff with winners of each division plus a wild card best record or highest rank so that michigan and ohio st can both be in the playoffs?

Fox Sports supposedly coughed up extra money on the TV contract for Oregon and Washington. But they drew the line at Stanford and Cal and wasn’t going to pay extra for them. And Big Ten Presidents didn’t seem to want to pony up anything out of their share to bring them aboard.

Seems like a missed opportunity that should get looked at again. Maybe meet in the middle a bit? Cal and Stanford certainly meet any academic requirements, got good infrastructure and alumni, and also creates an opportunity to have a “West” division that would seriously reduce the travel issues.

With 18 teams, the 'G' can be slightly altered to double as an 8. But with 20 teams, they'd have to come up with a whole new logo.
