Open practice?
The open practice & scrimmage took place yesterday, I thought. Was anyone there? Any coverage? Any highlights from the scrimmage? Any reports on the scrimmage? What were the teams? Who showed out?
Such a joke.
Such a joke.

Re: Open practice?
I used to go to these with a cousin of mine who lived near Detroit, initially at UD-Mercy and then The Palace when things got more popular. I haven't even heard of this. The Pistons.com board just ... vanished. Usually with an error message, but it was very active. They could hire someone from here for little money to do this.

Re: Open practice?
This goes with the whole marketing team for the Pistons being just awful at their jobs.MortSahlfan wrote:I used to go to these with a cousin of mine who lived near Detroit, initially at UD-Mercy and then The Palace when things got more popular. Very little awareness surrounding the team, whatsoever.
They are filling up the LCA for now, but they are playing a dangerous game when it comes to marketing. The Lions now seem to be a functional pro sports franchise, and they will absolutely suck all of the oxygen out of the room.
There used to be Pistons billboards along most major highways as well. This year? Nothing. Up and down the US-23 Corridor used to have 3 or 4 of them.
In any event, losing the Pistons board seems just stupid to be honest.

Re: Open practice?
This guy posted a recap a little while ago. Doesn't appear that there was a scrimmage.

Only other thing I've found was a photo gallery from the Free Press.

Tin foil hat time (i.e. disregard this post with prejudice as it's likely nothing)
Can you think of any good reason why a front office would do so little in terms of marketing for the product they are selling?
There are only two things that come to mind:
1. Ineptitude which seems to be the common belief
2. They are no longer interested in fostering a relationship with the geographic area they are currently in...
I have no affiliation with any galaxy even remotely associated with the Pistons organization. This is pure theory crafting out of boredom waiting for the next preseason game to come around...

With your waivers in mind, I still have two thoughts on 2.
1. It's not just their geographic area being neglected. The internet is global.
2. Gores is a Michigander and MSU grad. He's also poured money into Detroit facilities. He's not looking to move the team.

Re: Open practice?
I can't believe that much ineptitude. And yeah, Gores has never held back spending money, while a guy like Mark Cuban wouldn't even give Jalen Brunson 4/40m and then wouldn't pay him the 4/120 he got from NY and let Steve Nash go.
There's no reason a free website by random folks have more than the Pistons.com site. Or YouTUbe, etc.

He played ball at Notre Dame and Ivey's mom is the women's coach at Notre Dame. I wouldn't be surprised of Monty's son Eligjah ends up playing for Notre Dame as well (currently playing for Brother Rice in Bloomfield Township).

We just built an arena. The team’s window to leave was when the team was sold.

Actually, the Wings built an arena. We basically latched on as tenants. But still.

In my couple interactions with Pistons staff at LCA, they treated the building as "not theirs", something they rent.
I think Pistons marketing has gone downhill ever since the move downtown was announced. Like him or not, the Pistons never really figured out marketing after Tom Wilson left, never mind having him be at the other end of the table with LCA.
I rarely had problems being aware of open practices at OU and the Palace. Now we have threads like this. *sigh*

A lot of winning, sure.
Winning so much we can't be ignored, sure.
Winning so much that others tremble before our might, indeed!
But, our own marketing should be on the ball, pumping things along, not curled up in the fetal position waiting for people to show up like it's magic. The last time we made the playoffs, with an All-NBA media-savvy guy in Blake, our marketing was crap, and the fan engagement was "de minimus".

Re: Open practice?
I agree, I do find it weird they don’t get marketed for their own state/city, but man they’ve been terrible, so far not showing much to get hyped about in pre season. If they play abs show promise ppl will come and marketing would come I’d imagine. Who pays for hype/marketing? Maybe gores don’t want to until he sees some promise and right direction, idk lmfaoUncle Mxy wrote:joedumars1 wrote:Winning will change everything

Actually the window is now to sell or any time after Gores had bought it. He purchased the team for $325 million, and it has easily gotten into billions now so Gores can sell any time and continue on living in absolute needless excess for hundreds of years
Him buying this team was the one move to double his net worth essentially for free
