Ron Holland: Detroit Pistons 2024 5th Overall Pick

Post#1 » by coordinator0 » Thu Jun 27, 2024 12:47 am

From Sam Vecenie's Draft Guide:

SUMMARY: I’ve changed my evaluation of Holland more than any other player in this class. I often struggle to project players like Holland who haven’t demonstrated consistent feel for the game. His shooting is an issue; he’s willing to take them, but he made just 24 percent and must clean up his mechanics. However, he possesses a ton of basketball character, and it shows in how he attacks the game. He’s the ultimate loose-ball guy. His energy is infectious. He plays incredibly hard and competes all the time. On top of that, he’s a remarkable athlete with functional burst on the ground and foundational strength to avoid getting dislodged. Even if his
shooting and feel don't come around and he doesn’t turn into a star, could he play a similar role as Aaron Gordon, doing all of the dirty work around the court to help teams win? Holland’s G League season made people forget that he has won every single place he’d been prior to that. He’s willing to do the stuff other players don’t want to do. In the end, there are a lot of outs for wings with his mix of production, effort competitiveness, so I kept him in my top 10.

I'm for it, can you imagine if him and Asur develop a 3 pt shot? I wonder what's that starting 5 looks like, but practice is going to be crazy especially with Holland and Thompson matching up against each other.

This pick is ass. We reach for a non-shooter? Seems like Langdon telling Weaver "hold my beer".
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Hopefully he ends up the best player but he is a bad fit.

Langdon said screw Weavers roster and took the most athletic defender on the wing.

Is he at least a good scorer at the rim? I want some kind of two way play out of him.

We better get a lot of steals, cuz we're probably only scoring in transition

Puke. Horrible value for the #5. Literally nobody else was taking him there

Yet another 'if he ever learns how to shoot' guy. Has anyone that has seen him seen the potential? Maybe we're banking on the new shooting coach being a miracle worker.

The intangibles of course sound good and I'll keep an open mind. The game is ultimately though about putting the ball in the basket and everything opens up from there.

I'm happier with Holland than I would have been with Buzelis. Clingan was my much preferred option though.

Not really hung-up on drafting a guy that not's a great shooter - because pretty much everybody the team was likely to draft would have had the same weakness. Knecht being just about the sole outlier. Williams and Carter both need to rebuild their shots to work in the NBA.

So much of what turns prospects into quality players revolves around the mental side of things. Adjusting to the pros, having the drive to improve, etc. It seems Holland checks these boxes. I'm not mad here.

It'd be an easy guard for both. Just sag off each other like the plague and you effectively dismantled their offense

24 percent three point shooting on a team that finished 2-32 this year. At least he’s used to the losing…..

In order to trade back, you need somebody wanting to trade up and need to be sure to get.your guy. Trade back to 9 with Memphis and get what? And then draft who?

Just happy its not Buzelis.

So much for space around Cade. Instead we get Ivey 2.0

Willing to give him a shot. There's no denying he can score and at 18 years old he still has a lot of time to grow.

In his last 8 games in the G-League he averaged 24.6 PPG shooting 30% from three on 3.4 attempts per game.

Fred Vinson now has a lot of work to do.

Assuming he can get Holland and Ausar (& everyone else) up to league average we'll have 2 guys that are legit 2 way players.

We'll see what free agency and trades bring before throwing Langdon under the bus but given the selections after us it seems obvious no one was offering much to move up
