A positive take on Holland (John Hollinger)
The pick has widely panned by most analysts. However, one guy had him #1 on his big board: John Hollinger.
Sure, that guy washed out as a GM for the Grizzlies and seems to be a bit nasty on twitter, but he’s been pretty decent when it comes to big boards. Below are 2 drafts where we can start writing players off:
2020
LaMelo Ball, PG/SG, Illawara Hawks
Anthony Edwards, SG, Georgia
Killian Hayes, PG/SG, Ulm
Onyeka Okongwu, PF/C, USC
Obi Toppin, PF, Dayton
Tyrese Haliburton, SG/PG, Iowa State
Devin Vassell, SG, Florida State
James Wiseman, C, Memphis
Isaac Okoro, SF, Auburn
Kira Lewis, PG, Alabama
Aaron Nesmith, SF, Vanderbilt
Paul Reed, PF, DePaul
Aleksej Pokusevski, PF, Olympiakos
Patrick Williams, PF/SF, Florida State
Devon Dotson, PG, Kansas
Deni Avdija, PF/SF, Maccabi Tel Aviv
Saddiq Bey, SF, Villanova
Cole Anthony, PG/SG, North Carolina
Theo Maledon, PG/SG, ASVEL Lyon
Precious Achiuwa, PF, Memphis
In addition here is his 3 sleepers:
Elijah Hughes, SF, Syracuse
Malachi Flynn, PG, San Diego State
Desmond Bane, SG, TCU
Top 2 is solid. Above average rating on Hali. Bane as a sleeper is good. Lower on wiseman than most. Big yikes to Killian at #3. Onyeka is meh.
2021
Cade Cunningham, SG/SF, Oklahoma State, Freshman
Evan Mobley, PF/C, USC, Freshman
Scottie Barnes, SF, Florida State, Freshman
Alperen Sengun, PF/C, Besiktas
Jalen Green, SG, G League Ignite
Jalen Suggs, PG, Gonzaga, Freshman
Franz Wagner, SF, Michigan, Sophomore
Jonathan Kuminga, SF, G League Ignite
Jalen Johnson, PF, Duke, Freshman
Josh Giddey, SF, Adelaide
Jared Butler, PG/SG, Baylor, Junior
Corey Kispert, SF, Gonzaga, Senior
James Bouknight, SG, Connecticut, Sophomore
Moses Moody, SG, Arkansas, Freshman
Usman Garuba, PF/C, Real Madrid
Davion Mitchell, PG, Baylor, Senior
Miles McBride, PG, West Virginia, Sophomore
Keon Johnson, SG, Tennessee, Freshman
Chris Duarte, SG/SF, Oregon, Senior
Jaden Springer, PG/SG, Tennessee, Freshman
3 sleepers:
Prkacin, PF, KK Ciboria
Neemias Queta, C, Utah State, Junior
Herb Jones, SF/PF, Alabama, Senior
Nailed Herb jones as a sleeper. Hit on Sengun. Better than most on Jalen Johnson. No real crazy misses.
All in all, it looks like the guy is a solid evaluator and he has our guy at #1. In a draft that was said to be one of the worst of the century, swinging for the high reward player makes sense.

Good post. We all need to remember 2020 was the Covid draft - no workouts, less scouting, etc. That was definitely a crapshoot.

Thankful this is it's own thread.
Possibly include Hollinger's scouting in Holland for added context.
I get we're traumatised as a fan base but it's not Holland's fault we've sucked monkey spunk for 15+ years.
Poor kid never saw the Going to Work Pistons in full flight ffs

He'll be fine as long as you plan on trading a few of the other young guys

Re: A positive take on Holland (John Hollinger)
So you found one guy who ranked him #1. Meanwhile 99% of the world didn't.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

That was almost every broadcaster/podcaster/youtuber joke, and hey, they’re not wrong.
Personally my favourite source for information is the Dunc’d on podcast with Nate Duncan and Danny Leroux because they are both really intelligent/analytical and don’t mince words, they will call it as they see it and if a players trash they will say that, they don’t care about player/personnel feelings. They said something similar but also said out of all the teams in the league, if you could just improve one rosters shooting Detroit would have by an insane margin the most to gain and that was before todays draft. They joked it was now at least 1.5x that on the post draft pod

Re: A positive take on Holland (John Hollinger)
My initial reaction was a bit of disappointment because I felt let we could have gotten good value trading down to #9 and I didn't see a real drop off between a few of these players. You also save $2 million this year by dropping back from #5 to #9.
That said, if this was the player TL & crew really wanted to draft then it makes sense to get him while he's there at five and put the work into helping him become what they want him to become. It'll be interesting to see how he looks in 10 days in the summer league.
You are really banking on this kid learning to shoot or he's out of the league before his 5th season. If he can learn to shoot then he should be a solid pick for us at #5. The

Re: A positive take on Holland (John Hollinger)
Look, I'm not a fan of the pick but I don't know why the pick was universally "panned". This draft SUCKS, there was nobody available at 5 who you can point to say "Oh yeah the Pistons need to take THAT guy". Who was there? Clingan? Buzelis? Williams? Saluan? Lets get real here. Hell, even Risacher, is that guy a top 5 pick in any decent draft?
In terms of trade down, Charlotte didn't trade down either so apparently the Grizzlies didn't want Clingan THAT bad so what can ya do, trade down for a couple of extra 2nds or whatever crap Memphis was likely offering?
As I said, I'm not a big fan of Holland (the roster fit mainly) or anybody available at 5 for that matter but the Pistons are taking a swing on upside here in a draft where there's not many swings available so....time will tell.

This seems like the deja vu. I'm fine with Holland as a prospect. Super athletic, good size, plays hard, defends etc. Same with Ausar. If their shot develops, they become the type of guys literally every team is looking for in the modern game. The problem is that shots don't usually come around. And when they do, it usually takes a while. In the meantime, if we don't want to watch several more horrific seasons, we need some floor spacers out there.

Re: A positive take on Holland (John Hollinger)
San Antonio had the best draft night. The lottery ticket as Wemby ages into the final years of his second contract before becoming a UFA gives them a chance to have a lottery pick or even #1 OA. Odds Minnesota will be good 7 yrs from now? Teams usually don't have that kind of run.

SA took quite a risk on that #8 pick trade because its certainly possible that Minny will be better than them during the pick swap year so that might not net them anything. Minny has a young start in Edwards who will likely be in his prime in 6 to 7 years as one of the top 3-5 players in the league.... Of course **** could always go sideways but its very possible for the #8 pick they get no pick swap and they get a single pick in the 24-30 range that is 7 years into the future.

Yeah. I shared a positive take only because analyst’s hit rate isn’t impressive. Take a look at consensus draft grades over the past 20 years and it’s literally a crapshoot. No one knows how these kids will pan out.

Here's my contribution to this thread. I have no idea who this guy is. Could be one of us, for all I know. If nothing else, he seems an avid and somewhat knowledgeable hoops/pistons fan. He had Holland #2 on his board and has a lot of stuff on him once the pick is made.
