I'll leave this up to all the coaching experts but I'm fine with it

I’ll just be real honest and say I have no idea how he meshes with this group of players.

I sorta wanted to see us try someone new after Borrego rejected us.

I'm ok with it but I was also ok with Monty, Casey, and SVG.... all of those guys had winning records coming to Detroit and none really worked out for us (0 Playoff wins).

Hopefully he's someone who's motivated to succeed with our young core and he also is here for a long time... He'll need to show incremental improvement but its hard to not improve on a 14 win season.

This is why my hope is for this team over the next 3 seasons we'll see how close we can be to getting there.
30 wins
40 wins
50 wins

Also, after Gores got burned bad on the last deal.... it'll be interesting to see what JB gets paid here.

Also, will he have interest in going to get Okoro (who is an RFA) whom he coached the last few years in Cleveland.

The scary thing is, so far everything that TL has done has felt like its something Weaver would do.

I’m not sure about that. Weaver wanted Kevin Ollie or Charles Lee.

I’m okay with this. He’s coached a young team up from a terrible record. Beyond that truthfully I really don’t know.

Borrego had an awful track record as coach. 148-183 and never made the playoffs. The people who wanted him were smoking crack. Bickerstaff is not great, but he’s a better hire then Borrego!

In the end of the day he hired Monty though. He kept Casey... those were his decisions to make. He wanted Ollie if Monty said no.

Seems like a defensive and developmental coach. Combine that with a shooting Coach guru And hopefully he rounds out his staff well with good assistance i.e. Sam Cassel is still looking for his assistant coach job. (Not likely here)

Think he's been through a few rebuilds so I guess that's a positive. Welcome to Detroit JB

He at the very least understands how to work with poorly fitting rosters

It'll be interesting to see who he ends up landing as his lead assistant. Ideally its an offensive minded lead assistant.

"League sources said Bickerstaff was nearly fired around Thanksgiving after the team’s poor start. He also was admonished by team president Koby Altman in front of his entire coaching staff for playing Mitchell too many minutes in a December win over the Houston Rockets in overtime while both Darius Garland and Evan Mobley were out.

Cleveland was 13-12 when it was announced both Garland and Mobley would be out for up to two months due to injuries. Their absence might have permanently sunk Bickerstaff. Instead, he did some of his best work while the Cavs won an NBA-best 22 games from mid-December until the All-Star break, igniting the team’s campaign to get Bickerstaff elected as NBA Coach of the Year (he finished with one third-place vote)."

Great hire. The Cavs made a mistake firing him.

Very mid hire. I would of liked to see us go after some younger unknown analytical nerdy coach. Not sure who exactly it would be but hes out there somewhere on a staff working ITL.

Dwane Casey hire 2.0

Start another rebuild, bring in another rebuilding retread. The Deja vu is strong with this one.

The real question, is this;

Is Ron Holland, Langdons Killian Hayes? This is all so bizarre. I dont see how it can get worse, so I'll bet Bickerstaff cam coach them to the mid twenties, or perhaps even higher. He plays his starters minutes.

Let's see his rotations. I knew the team wouldn't go for a new hire(Sweeney)but I'm still disappointed.

Im fine with this hire,, Bickerstaff got hosed in Cleveland after helping to develop that roster. They massively changed it up on him with Lauri/Mitchell swap, then fired him after 2 of his main contributors were down despite going to the 2nd rd.

He also knows how to maximize rosters without a ton of shooting. Im not over the moon but its a solid hire.
