If Weaver drafted right?

What is your roster with the picks we have had or the people he should have taken? Best roster I could come up with was:

Haliburton / Sasser
Sharpe / Vet
Bey / Thompson
Mobley / Fonteccio
Duren / Stewart

Ps. Retrospect is 20/20

Sharpe of all people? He’s worse than Mathurin and Ivey. But the answer there is definitely Jdub if we’re going hindsight 20-20 mode.

Let’s go all offense no defense small ball lol

Hali
Maxey
Bane
Jdub
Sengun

Words cannot describe how tired I am of these what ifs.

You’re also assuming we’d still have all the same picks. Doesn’t work that way.

If Weaver would have just drafted Haliburton instead of Hayes he's certainly still have a job here. It doesn't matter where that 2021 draft pick ends up we could have had Cade, Barnes, Mobley, SGA(via trade), Franz, etc.... It all comes down simply to drafting Hayes at #7 that derailed this entire rebuild... because we didn't only draft him we doubled down by keeping him, playing him major minutes and even giving him $7.4 million in year four which made zero sense based on what we saw from him. Good GMs know when to cut their loses. If Joe D had the same mind set we never would have won in 2004 because we would have still been trying to figure out how we could get the most out of Rodney White and Mateen Cleaves.

2020 draft is easy to look back at w new information, but because of Covid, it was impossible to do the usual due diligence. If there was an excusable year, that was it.

It would be a much more interesting “what if” reviewing the team if we could have drafted in our slot based on our record.

2020-Haliburton, Stewart, Maxey, and Jordan Nwora.
2021-(let’s say the Pistons their usual lottery luck) Franz Wagner, Ayo Dosunmu, euro stash, and Luka Garza
2022- still Ivey and Duren
2023 and 2024, I think it’s too early to call

Hali, Maxey and Ivey are your 3 guards in that order

Wagner, Duren and Stewart are your bigs in that order.

The past two drafts you’d be looking to solve the 3 position as you really just have role players. Moe Wagner is a Piston instead of a member of the Magic, not sure if Garza sticks around.

2020 - 5th - Isaac Okuro or Tyrese Halliburton
2021 - 2nd - Jalen Green or Evan Mobley
2022 - 3rd - Jabari Smith
2023 - 1st - Victor Wembanyama
2024 - 1st - Zaccharie Risacher

For me Maxey is the most tilting. A few people wanted him in the draft thread me included . He was going in that 15 or higher on most the predraft boards. We had already drafted Kill but at that point we needed to go BAP.

Maxey is awesome now. Hes improved every season. Best floater ITL just so crafty. Hit the all star team this year.

Never forget that if Troy had pick 1 in that draft he was passing Ball and Edwards.

If I were general manager, here is what I would have done in the Weaver (and Langdon) era. This is not hindsight:

2020: Haliburton not Hayes, Bey yes, Stewart no (we still owe the Knicks a first rounder for Stewart, I thought that trade was stupid).
2021: trade 1OA for other picks and Mobley, not Cade.
2022: Mathurin (or Sharpe) not ivey, Duren yes
2023: Ausar Thompson, yes, Sasser yes - he did exactly what i would have done last year.
2024: Carter (or Clingan) not Holland

Starters: Haliburton, Mathurin, Bey, Mobley, Duren.
Bench: Sasser, Carter, Ausar, Fontecchio, extra pick from Cade trade

Bey is a number 4 option which is what he is.
Ausar is a defensive shut down specialist which is what he is.
Hali, Math, Bey, occasionally Mobley can all hit the three in the first unit. Sasser Carter and Font all hit threes off the bench. Yes, this team can shoot.
Mobley is your rim protector so Duren doesn’t need to be.

The elephant in the room as-is: Cade Cunningham.

And I would have done it for free.

It's a pointless scenario as we don't know how the players we should have chosen would affect subsequent picks. Conceivably we would have been in the play-in/playoffs this year if he'd absolutely nailed every pick.

Haliburton alone drastically changes the entire exercise so it's pointless

If Weaver drafted right he'd still have a job. That was supposed to be his whole expertise and he was just awful. The man had a great eye for role players and that's it.

I really wanted Mobley instead of Cade. I think about that a lot.

We'd be even worse

What even is this?? If you drafted Haliburton, you wouldn't be the worst team in the league, you wouldn't get the first pick, and you wouldn't get Cunningham.

This whole exercise makes no sense.
