Pistons Rotation as of 7.1

The big names have all signed. Our rotation if healthy looks as follows:

Starters:
Cade
Ivey
Tech
Harris
Duren
6th man: THJ

Bench Unit
Sasser/Ivey
THJ
Holland
Ausar
Stewart

This looks pretty balanced to me. We would need Ivey to take a substantial leap. I see 30 win potential as is. Thoughts?

All depends on internal development. Which I wasn't against but the odds of everyone making the leaps we need to compete for the play in is just so low.

A Tech resigning is in theory enough to put us at the floor I think.

But we certainly could use another 24 mill before resigning him.

Doubt we’ll add anyone particularly important but we may not be finished.

With no other moves, barring major injuries, I think we win 28 games.

With a fully engaged head coach and no g-league players in the rotation, I think we double last seasons win total.

With Harris & Hardaway, I don’t expect any historical losing streaks.

One of Ausar or Holland is going to start for us. You can't play them together at this point in any sort of functional lineup. Either Tech or Ivey is going come off the bench.

Of course, we might not be done. Hard to believe the plan is to add Harris and basically run it back.

I came up with 28 wins myself. That's exactly where I'm at.

Cade
Sasser/Ivey
Font/Hardaway
Harris/Ausar
Stew/Duren

Or have Duren start so we have some Stew 3pt shooting in the 2nd unit. With Cade/Sasser/Ivey making the 3 guard line-up. With Ivey off the bench, he can be selfish, not have to guard elite offensive players. Sasser has the body of the 1, but plays like a 2, and Cade has the body of a 2, but plays like a 1.

I actually think our starting lineup does look better with Stewart starting instead of Duren. That might be an unpopular take. I like Duren’s offensive game a lot- I think he’s a great P/R partner for Cade but he’s flat out awful defensively.

This is how I see the roster right now

Jalen Duren / Isaiah Stewart /
Tobias Harris / Simone Fontecchio /
Ausar Thompson / Ron Holland /
Tim Hardaway Jr / Jaden Ivey / Wendell Moore Jr
Cade Cunningham / Marcus Sasser /

I am not sure if they win 20 games. It's better than last year, because we don't have Stewart at PF but still it's laughable.

I really would have preferred getting in on Josh Green as part of the Klay deal than what we actually did with Dallas.

I don’t care too much about Grimes (who will see marginal minutes in Dallas’s rotation IMO) but I really don’t like Hardaway as a player.

Nobody who watches him play does, but his competition for the starting spot is Ivey. They're similar level defenders (among the worst in the league) and THJr can hit 35% of his 3's, while Ivey can't do anything on offense and need the ball on his hands.

You're right.. I'd start Hardaway because he's a better player, but also to higher his stock to trade, and Ivey would play better off the bench, since he can be selfish and play 1/2, and not have to guard starters, while the starting line-up would have better movement, and certainly more 3's. With the opposing team having to take it out of bounds with the defense set, it would help our horrible defense, and with the youth, we need to get stops and run.

If Ivey, Ausar and Duren are all bench players, trade them now.

I see 18-44, then a twenty game swan dive for more ping pong balls

Cade (32) / Ivey (10) / Sasser (6)
Ausar (28) / Ivey (20)
Fontecchio (30) / THJ (18)
Tobias (32) / Stewart (6) / Holland (10)
Stewart (24) / Duren (24)

That’s my rotation to maximize wins. Mostly 3 guard rotation with Cade/Ivey/Ausar. Mostly 3 “big” rotation with Stewart/Tobias/Duren. Sasser and Holland getting closer to 10mpg barring injuries.

Starting Ausar because Cade needs defense next to him. Starting Stewart because he needs to be paired with Ausar as much as possible. Defense and spacing improves.

Fontecchio and Tobias round out the starters as they’re probably our 2nd and 3rd best offensive players and they’re OK defenders. A little bit undersized but more switchable with no one starting under 6-6.

2nd unit is bad defensively but hopefully with more staggering it’s fine against opposing benches.

Ivey comes off the bench but still gets 30 mpg staggering with Cade more often.

We don’t even know if/when Ausar will be ready to come back.

I wouldn’t pencil him in anywhere right away.

When predicting win totals, keep in mind how many non-nba players were in our rotation & starting last season.

Most of the players that were our free agents aside from Tech will most likely be out of the league.

Bottom line to get to 30 wins is we need to add a big center ,
