Hypothetical: Killian Hayes as the 3rd pg for the Pistons

Post#1 » by Invictus88 » Fri Jul 26, 2024 4:59 pm

This is currently impossible given he is currently a camp body / roster hopeful for the Nets. But I find it interesting that some folks around here are *still* passively defending this guy (maybe moreso in the Brooklyn forums).

I'm bored. There's no real news. Why not shake up the bees nest even further by posting this hypothetical:

Would you be happy if the Pistons somehow ended up signing Killian Hayes as a 3rd pg to use sparingly in case of injury?

What about if the Pistons weren't planning on going after any other of the remaining pg FAs? (Tyus Jones, Fultz, Beverley, DSJ)

No. I'd be very unhappy. He's far short of NBA caliber, and four brutal seasons of watching him play was three too many. I've never seen such a bad player get so many chances.

What about if the Pistons weren't planning on going after any other of the remaining pg FAs?

Still no. Even Sasser is a far preferable alternative.

1- no. I don’t think it would be good for him and he doesn’t improve on anyone we have. Even if some alternative reality where he wasn’t a former Piston, I’d still say no

2- I’d look at almost anyone else over Killian. Even ex spur Devonte Graham has had his moments and can shoot 3s. And his career assist to turnover ratio is pretty good. Not to mention he’d be a minimum signing at this point

Kill coming back would be lousy for culture.

I think Sasser is going to be at point guard, per his summer league interview. I don’t think Pistons are adding another point guard

I also don't want him back.

But I don't think that Sasser is a pg at all. Even given the interview. He was never used that way in college. In all the games that we've seen so far from him (last year and in SL) he hasn't looked the part either.

It's like someone took an average/substandard PG and then decided to split him in half. All of the height and court vision was doled out to Killian. All of the shooting, aggression and ability to generate open looks was given to Sasser.

I'd much rather see us sign DSJ. It wouldn't be a sexy signing but it would make sense.

Back to twiddling my thumbs...

DSJ is almost as bad a scorer as Killian.

Hayes has the skillset to be a functional rotation player, albeit a limited one, but he's consistently struggled under pressure. I think he gets inside his own head a little too much. He knows when he's struggling or against the ropes and he wears it all over his face/body. Some guys are built for that moment and some guys just aren't. He's an aren't.

Still, I wish him well and hope he figures it out. *shrug*

Nothing personal against the guy.

But no, I don’t want him back.

It's true. Pickings are slim at pg and the only good one left doesn't want to come here. We don't fit what he is looking for in terms of opportunities.

I'd prefer Sasser over DSJ.

He was drafted at the height of COVID-19, and that didn't serve him or the team well.
Killian as a Piston again nearly guarantees emo suckage and shrinkage in key moments.
He needs to be on another team to have any hope of developing an NBA-rotation game.

I really hope Killian can get his career back on track, but it isn't happening in Detroit.
If anything Detroit should get a vet 3rd PG to help mentor the young guys like Harris and THj.
As an Aussie, I would love to see mills in a Detroit jersey, but I don't see it happening.

Skill wise he’s not that bad compared to what’s left in my opinion, but I think it’s needs to be at least 3yrs in the league somewhere else first, before I’d go that route again.

On a fifteen man roster and with the hope that we'll never need to play him: maybe - I'm not sure how many other options there are and we do need another PG.

I’d rather get ish smith maybe he can teach Ivey how to use that speed in different ways that are effective, plus his experience is worth two veterans.

Yeah i’ve never seen a player get that many ball touches and NOT get better, it’s almost impossible. I remember there was so much hate on Brandon Knight but that kid had elite defense, size, and 40% 3, he’s everything we need right now in a shooting guard.

I’m surprised Sasser struggled in the Summer League. Right now I’m doubting he comes back next season, I would trade him for a second round pick if we could from Wizards for example. My best trade idea was Sasser for Tyus Jones but I think Sasser played himself to low value in Summer league. It’s weird because he came from a leadership position in Houston with a successful 4 years under a great college coach. I don’t understand that. I still think it’s worth keeping him for another year but he should be third string at best.

I don’t see Tyus Jones as realistic or even Deangelo Russell. I think right now it’s Fultz vs DSJ. I’d love DSJ back as a piston, he’s a pretty darn good defender and can turn hot off the bench any given night.

Obviously, no I don't want to see him, but even hypothetically, it doesn't make sense. The two mutually parted ways last year. I have to imagine Killian would prefer to play for ANY other team if given the choice. And if pistons are the only remaining team, you really think they want a guy who they released last year and that NO TEAM wants this year? Even taking a runner on some random name in free agency is a better gamble. It's a new coach, so it's not like he even "knows the system". Yeah he knows the players, but we also know he can't play with said players.

Best case scenario he somehow makes the Brooklyn roster and I live bet pistons moneyline when Killian checks in against the pistons. Clank. Clank. Clank.

No, Killian's time is done here. If he ever hopes to be something in the NBA (which seems unlikely) then it will be somewhere else.

Also, I'm not entirely certain how anyone could have watched Sasser play PG for us in summer league and think that he should be our backup PG (unless we are wanting to maximize our chances to "capture the Flagg").
