Let the season begin

Super strange that our first pre-season game against the Bucks on Sunday Oct 6th is on ESPN. Like we rarely ever get 1 regular season game on ESPN so why is our first preseason game on? Am I missing something? I could see if they wanted to put the game against the Suns on ESPN since its at the Breslin Center but this game makes zero sense.

I guarantee its a contractual obligation thing. Its probably written into the language the NBA signs with networks, which will involve the owners, and they have to air one game.

They get the Pistons out of the way in the preseason, as the language probably doesn't stipulate on regular season, vs preseason.

Somewhat surprising that the language wouldn't stipulate that.

It would have to be a contractual obligation involving two games. Even if we're ignoring NBATV (three games on there this year) we do have a regular season game on ESPN this year- February 7th against Philadelphia.

Getting to watch Cade is about the only thing i'm excited for. Tobias back in a pistons uniform is cool too I guess.

Can't wait for all the usual media day dialogue about players training the house down, putting on 10-15 lbs of muscle and working on multiple facets of their game.

What is actually the problem with Ausar? He's apparently not medically available for the start of preseason. I've heard rumblings of clotting after he was pulled last year but no real specifics.

I realize you have to remain tight-lipped due to HIPAA rules, etc but it's been several months of vague statements. When do we get to actually find out why one of our future cornerstones can't play?

Yeah, this is the ugliest aspect of our current rebuild. We've all been talking about Ausar as though he's a factor in the upcoming season when that's very much a question mark right now.

And it sucks- even for me, someone who's really not sold on Ausar at all.

HIPAA only applies to medical professionals. Regular people can talk about injuries and medical stuff all they want. It sounds like the league and players association lawyers are fighting over the process to clear him. Ausar said he's feeling great and is just waiting for the league OK.

i wonder if he's still on blood thinners or something, given that he has clearance to do all non-contact stuff.

obviously safety comes first but i hope he's cleared, he lives for basketball so i'm sure he'll hate to sit out.

I'm not ready to embrace 'long term' disappointment until it's foisted upon me. As I heard it, team medical has declared Ausar ready to go, but the Player's Association has to have their medico's review and concurrence. Ausar says he's feeling great. Why this is occurring now is curious.

After Chris Bosh initially missed the entire season the year he got his first blood clot, he returned the following year only to have another clot.

The optics of a player on blood thinners dying due to on the court contact would be a colossal disaster for the league in a multitude of ways, so his career was effectively over. I don't know if Ausar is on blood thinners anymore, I presume he's not, but he's in a weird situation now where he ever has a 2nd blood clot, he will never play another game in the NBA after that.

Chris Bosh was never cleared by his or his team's doctors once his clots returned. The league never blocked him from playing. He also had a much more serious issue originally with clots in his lungs that required surgery. Obviously, all blood clots are serious, but there are different levels of concern. It also can be treated with various levels of drugs and not all of them are likley to lead to life threatening bleeding from NBA contact.
