Presume this must be a precursor to a bigger move as otherwise we are very thin at C now.

Weird, so this saves us the rest of his almost 8m for this year and almost 8m next year?

Bit shocked by this unless it’s part one of two.

I agree that something is likely up, possibly as early as tomorrow... with us either needing the roster spot or needing the extra cap room to absorb a contract.
It'll certainly be interesting to see what the follow up move is.... We don't make this move unless something is imminent especially with Duren having an injured wrist.

Keith Smith has thoughts on this:
Thread of thoughts on what the Detroit Pistons waiving Paul Reed means and what they could be lining up for.
My eyebrows are raised a bit at Detroit waiving Paul Reed now vs waiting.
Pistons have $15.5M in cap space and two open roster spots. Only team with cap space.
Also important: Going up to $15.5M in space gives Detroit more room than any team that still has the $12.8M NTMLE.
The Pistons will drop under the salary floor after waiving Paul Reed (note: flexible until waiver is official)
By my reading of the CBA, Detroit will have one day to get over the salary floor.
That means Detroit could be lining some things up to happen in an order here. Going to be fun to track!
Part of the reason I think Detroit may be lining things up is that if they were to stay under the salary floor, they wouldn't get their portion of the nearly $20M luxury tax disbursement if they were to stay under the salary floor for more than one day.
Detroit can sign a player to a prorated veteran minimum deal (or dip into some cap space) to get back over the salary floor as well.
Going to be an interesting time coming for the Pistons. Definitely some roster maneuvering happening over the coming days.

According to Bobby Marks, this trade puts us below the minimum salary and we'll have to either sign for someone or trade for something very soon (like tonight) to stay above the minimum roster floor.

Interestingly, Vucevic missed his first game of the season last night...

With Reed waived, Font for Vuc works straight up an Font can be traded starting tomorrow. Really just about anyone on our team works straight up for him. Wendell Moore Jr could be traded for him straight up with our cap space.
I am really hoping we aren't going after Kuzma.

If we have just over 15 in cap space and Vucevic is 20 down just trading Moores 2.5 work?
What's scary is Duren plus our space works. I really hope we don't do that. Fontecchio for him works for me. Stew would have to go back to backup PF but that's fine. Having a guy like Vucevic will help Cade out so much and that's all that matters right now.

Yeah this feels like a precursor to Vucevic. Clearing salary (especially a player who is a PF/C), Vucevic being out for yesterday's game with an "illness" and the lack of offensive production from our C position this season feels like it is all lining up for that outcome.

We probably just sign J. McGee

Agreed. And we can't go down another big body with only Duren/Stew on this roster. I believe another C is incoming.

Yeah, I feel like its either Vuc or they are getting a different big man that they are getting paid draft compensation to take on (perhaps so another team can make a deal or so someone can get under the luxury tax).
No chance we are just ok with Thompson being the third string center IMO.

Definitely curious to see what we do if Marks' reading of the CBA is correct. If it is indeed a trade one would need to have been lined up before Reed was waived. It looks like we're only slightly below the floor, so a smaller signing or two seems a lot more likely.
I'd like to be proven wrong but a larger trade would surprise me.

I hate when you speak logically!
A small signing would be soooo boring. I hope you're wrong

Oh geez. Did Duren really have a wrist injury? When did this happen? Hmmmm. I'd be sad if it's him for Vucevic but at least we'd be improved for this and next year.
