The league just announced a little while ago that Flip Saunders has been named Eastern Conference coach of the month for December. While the Pistons' 15-2 record in December certainly was the biggest factor in him getting this honor, I was more impressed with the way he handled the team's fluctuating rotation last month.

The job he has done this year is way, way better than what he did when he coached the team to a franchise-record 64 wins two years ago. That team was so locked into winning, it really didn't matter who was coaching the team. They were determined to beat anyone in their way. This team is winning too, but they're doing it Flip's way. They still don't get the ball into the post offensively as much as I would like to see, but being a jump-shooting team hasn't made them a bad defensive club - something most jump-shooting teams can't say.

They're still clamping down on teams defensively, while at the same time running Saunders' offense with very few mistakes being made. I have been hesitant to place too many expectations on this group, but let's be real. It's hard to imagine any team - Boston included - beating them in a best-of-seven series, the way they've played the past couple of weeks.

Flip is having his best coaching year as a Piston, this is no surprise.

Well deserved. Despite our bashing, Flip is a really good regular season coach. I'm impressed with the job he's doing this season. Of course when the playoffs come...
